- Yuzawa Now: Friday 18th May 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 857cm Posted on Friday 18th May 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday and the day before were both pretty hot - it was almost 30C in Yuzawa on Wednesday! And it's rather warm today too with temps up to about 27 (and possibly the rest) with something of humid feel out there. Still, rain is due from sometime this afternoon and overnight tonight, possibly very heavy at times. A dramatic cool-down is due tomorrow too... perhaps even down to around 10C in town during the day and even lower still later on. It looks like there's even the chance of some snow falling very high up (!), according to some forecasts. So the weather is all over the place at the moment and something of a roller coaster ride. --- The 1500m main course at the Kagura ski resort remains open for this weekend. There's more ground appearing in places but still fairly decent snow on there, though rather 'dirty looking'. (See the image below from yesterday and courtesy of Kagura). You need to get Mitsumata Ropeway, the Mitsumata quad and then the Kagura Gondola to get over to the main Kagura area. Once there, the Kagura Number 1 high speed lift and the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift plan to be operating and servicing the open course. On the way back at the end of the day, you need to get the Kagura Gondola and then the Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift. And then either take the Mitsumata quad back down to the Ropeway or slide down the artificial 'snow mats'. If you want to avoid using the snow mats, there's some walking involved - a total of about 900m on the way over to Kagura and about 400m on the way back to Mitsumata Ropeway. Mitsumata Ropeway plans to open at 7:30am on both Saturday and Sunday and operations will likely be back to how they are today on weekdays from Monday. --- Kagura is still hoping to be able to remain open until Sunday 27th May. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 857cm Posted on Sunday 27th May 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and the last Yuzawa Now report of the 2017-2018 season. Yesterday was the last day of the ski season here in Yuzawa as the Kagura resort closed for the last time after fine weather over the weekend. They really did well to remain open as long as late May - especially with so little fresh snow falling since early March. A big 'otsukaresama deshita' to everyone involved in the season here in the town. Hopefully we will now enjoy some more nice spring weather before entering rainy season and then moving on to the hot summer months. Our reporting will be back in the autumn when things are starting to cool down. Thank you for reading and we hope you have a fun summer. --- Skiing and snowboarding on artificial snow mats will be available over summer as follows: Kagura (Mitsumata slope): Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 7th July until 28th October; and then daily between 28th July and 2nd September GALA Yuzawa: 'Summer Park' open on Saturdays and Sundays between 28th July and 24th September Plastic mats might not be for everyone, but it is definitely one way to get up high and avoid the full-on heat of the summer months! The big annual summer event in Yuzawa is the Fuji Rock Festival. The Fuji Rock Festival is held at the base of the Naeba ski resort, which is about 30 minutes from the central area of Yuzawa town and the main Echigo Yuzawa train station. This year the Fuji Rock Festival will be held from Friday 27th July until Sunday 29th July. The line-up traditionally includes an interesting mix of mostly UK/US acts as well as local Japanese artists. This year the line-up includes Bob Dylan, NERD, Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, Jack Johnson, Chvrches... and, as they say, much more. --- Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town (in these Yuzawa Now reports) over the last six winter seasons: 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm So just over 8.5m in total for the season. That was not as much as last season, but double what we got during the 2015-2016 season. A respectable number for sure, but it has been a bit surprising just how little snow we got from early March onwards. 845cm of the 857cm total for the season fell by the end of February 2018! (Though please note that there was more snowfall at higher elevations). Hopefully we’ll see a much snowier ‘spring’ season next time around. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning everyone, and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports on SnowJapan. That old cliché is true - time just seems to goes so fast. I'm sure it's speeding up. It doesn't seem that long ago since we were all sweating out a ridiculously hot summer and checking out the Fuji Rock Festival up at Naeba. Happily that heat is well behind us now and it has been getting gradually colder. Much colder. Over the last week or so it seems to have suddenly become considerably colder - over the last few days temperatures have been struggling to rise much into double digits during the daytime. Heaters are now being used! The autumn leaves are looking pretty spectacular at the moment and when the sun shines it is a truly beautiful sight to see. (See photo taken on Sunday 28th October below). And if that is not enough... check out the images from Kagura below - natural snow has been spotted high up! Exciting times. The Kagura resort this season plans to open on Friday 23rd November, so we are now just over three weeks away. Details and opening dates from other ski resorts around the area are still being gathered and we will post more details in a report over the coming weeks. The 1,300m long (and 50-70m wide) main course will be open; and the Kagura Number 1 lift and Number 1 romance lift will be moving. First Mitsumata Ropeway at 7:30am! That's all the info available at the moment... full details tomorrow morning. --- Original report from earlier this morning Good morning from Yuzawa and there is good news to report. Kagura may not be able to open today as it had hoped to, but it is snowing - and snowing down to town level... and there's a thin layer of snow on the ground. It's rather wet, but it's snow (at the time of writing, might be rain in town as the day goes on) and it is the first down to town level this season. It will be interesting to see how much falls higher up by the end of today - and I will update you again tomorrow with any further info. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions. The official reason is 'maintenance' and it is unclear if and when it will re-open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 16cm Posted on Sunday 9th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Oh yes, is it really great to see snow on the ground and it continuing to fall from the skies. Our measuring point shows 14cm, and it's coming down nicely as of 8:30am. The forecasts seems to say moderate snowfall during the morning, perhaps lighter later on and tomorrow. Temps set to get a little milder around mid-week (hopefully not too much) before dropping again by the end of the week. Kagura resort are reporting 20-30cm and so that will really inject some freshness into the slopes up there. They are still opening the main course with the Family course, and with continued snowfall we should expect more to open soon. Perhaps a bit surprising but the opening of Tashiro has been delayed... until Saturday 15th December (when it will open at 7:30am). It's really important that we get a lot of snow over the next run of days with a number of ski resorts getting ready and hoping to open next weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 25cm Posted on Monday 10th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing for most of the day yesterday - light at times, heavier at times - and I have measured an additional 9cm to add to the reports. So, fairly decent - though we of course need more. This morning it has been snowing lightly but easing off and we are expecting a generally cloudy day today with the temperature not getting much above zero. There is some sun on the forecast for tomorrow and some conflicting views on what to expect around Wednesday; it looks likely that it will get a bit milder, maybe some rain in town, snow higher (?)... followed by snow later in the week. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens and hope for the best. This morning Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and they are going to be opening up the Panorama course; details below. As I mentioned yesterday, Tashiro is now planning to open from Saturday. Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai are ready to open as soon as there is enough snow and there's a bunch of other resorts hoping to get going this weekend. Just for information, yesterday afternoon Maiko Snow Resort were reporting 50cm snow depth on their upper area; Ishiuchi Maruyama were reporting 20-30cm. Hopefully it'll be a bit more than that now. --- Kagura lifts and courses: - Mitsumata Ropeway - Mitsumata Number 1 high speed lift - Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift - Kagura Gondola - Kagura Number 1 high speed lift - Kagura Number 4 romance lift * Kagura main course * Panorama course * Gondola course * Gondola line * Family course Naeba lifts and courses: - Number 5 high speed lift - Number 4 romance lift * Number 5 course (900m long and 30m wide by base) --- Other planned resort opening dates (subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions) Ready to open as soon as there is enough snow - Iwappara - Joetsu Kokusai Friday 14th December 2018 - Maiko Snow Resort - Yuzawa Park Saturday 15th December 2018 - GALA Yuzawa - Kagura (Tashiro) - Kandatsu Kogen - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Nakazato Friday 21st December 2018 - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - NASPA Ski Garden Saturday 22nd December 2018 - Chateau Shiozawa - Ipponsugi - Nakazato Snow Wood Sunday 23rd December 2018 - Hakkai Sanroku - Itsukamachi Friday 28th December 2018 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka Saturday 29th November 2018 - Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Monday 10th December 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 25cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 3 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 14cm (9th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 23cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura this morning are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall which is good to hear - just a little down here in town and while it hasn't amounted to much on the ground the trees are looking frosted once again as I write this (more so the higher you go), and it is of course better than the rain of yesterday. It is feeling colder this morning as well and while we might get to see the sun today some proper decent snowfall is forecast overnight tonight and into tomorrow. So I very much look forward to reporting that tomorrow. Maiko Snow Resort were hoping to be able to open from tomorrow but they have announced that to be delayed and will give an update tomorrow afternoon. Better news this morning! First of all, it's snowing and coming in nicely from the north. And I am measuring a decent chunk on the ground too and counting with snow forecast for the day. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall and they are opening Giant and Technical courses today. They are saying that their top Kagura Number 5 pair lift will open from 1st January 2019. From tomorrow the Tashiro Ropeway will also be open. From what I can see they seem to be saying that 'all areas' will be skiable from tomorrow so hopefully they can make that happen. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 15th December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 73cm Posted on Saturday 15th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it now feels like winter has properly started. :) It was snowing really heavily at times during the day yesterday and piling up quite quickly. I am measuring 32cm of snowfall since my report yesterday. I have decided to try and keep things simple this morning because there are so many details, and will update the report later on with more. OK so first off Kagura are reporting over 30cm of fresh snowfall. And Kagura is now officially 'fully open' (with a few exceptions!) as the Tashiro Area opens and pretty much all of the terrain is available. A bunch of other ski resorts are now open in Yuzawa. At GALA Yuzawa, the Chuo central area is opening this morning with three courses available - Melody, Entertainment and Jiji. Kandatsu Kogen, Yuzawa Kogen, Yuzawa Park and Joetsu Kokusai are also part open from this morning. Maiko are still keeping quiet but I would expect them to be opening up from tomorrow (that's simply a guess). As I said I'll flesh out the information later on. --- The following ski resorts are now confirmed to be at least part open: - GALA Yuzawa - Kagura - Kandatsu Kogen - Joetsu Kokusai - Naeba - Yuzawa Kogen - Yuzawa Park ...checking others now! --- Other planned opening dates Friday 21st December 2018 - Ishiuchi Maruyama - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - NASPA Ski Garden Saturday 22nd December 2018 - Chateau Shiozawa - Ipponsugi - Nakazato Snow Wood Sunday 23rd December 2018 - Hakkai Sanroku - Itsukamachi Friday 28th December 2018 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka Saturday 29th November 2018 - Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Saturday 15th December 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 73cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 6 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (15th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 71cm reported on 5 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
