The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura are once again reporting -2C and very light snow, and down in town we have wet roads again this morning and it is currently about +4C in town. The forecast has similar kind of conditions tomorrow with clearer skies likely on Sunday and Monday. There's not much else to report this morning so I'll just see you again tomorrow. --- Lifts: Mitsumata Ropeway: 8:00am until 5:00pm (last going up at 2:30pm) Mitsumata Number 1 high speed lift: 8:00am until 3:00pm Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift: 9:00am until 4:30am Kagura Gondola: 8:15am until 4:00pm Kagura Number 1 romance lift: 8:30am until 3:30pm Courses: Kagura main course - 600m in length, 30-50m wide Notes: The Mitsumata area is open just as a connecting area. The Tashiro area is closed. It plans to open from 8th December. The open course is not recommended for beginners. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Oh yes, is it really great to see snow on the ground and it continuing to fall from the skies. Our measuring point shows 14cm, and it's coming down nicely as of 8:30am. The forecasts seems to say moderate snowfall during the morning, perhaps lighter later on and tomorrow. Temps set to get a little milder around mid-week (hopefully not too much) before dropping again by the end of the week. Kagura resort are reporting 20-30cm and so that will really inject some freshness into the slopes up there. They are still opening the main course with the Family course, and with continued snowfall we should expect more to open soon. Perhaps a bit surprising but the opening of Tashiro has been delayed... until Saturday 15th December (when it will open at 7:30am). It's really important that we get a lot of snow over the next run of days with a number of ski resorts getting ready and hoping to open next weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing for most of the day yesterday - light at times, heavier at times - and I have measured an additional 9cm to add to the reports. So, fairly decent - though we of course need more. This morning it has been snowing lightly but easing off and we are expecting a generally cloudy day today with the temperature not getting much above zero. There is some sun on the forecast for tomorrow and some conflicting views on what to expect around Wednesday; it looks likely that it will get a bit milder, maybe some rain in town, snow higher (?)... followed by snow later in the week. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens and hope for the best. This morning Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and they are going to be opening up the Panorama course; details below. As I mentioned yesterday, Tashiro is now planning to open from Saturday. Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai are ready to open as soon as there is enough snow and there's a bunch of other resorts hoping to get going this weekend. Just for information, yesterday afternoon Maiko Snow Resort were reporting 50cm snow depth on their upper area; Ishiuchi Maruyama were reporting 20-30cm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura this morning are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall which is good to hear - just a little down here in town and while it hasn't amounted to much on the ground the trees are looking frosted once again as I write this (more so the higher you go), and it is of course better than the rain of yesterday. It is feeling colder this morning as well and while we might get to see the sun today some proper decent snowfall is forecast overnight tonight and into tomorrow. So I very much look forward to reporting that tomorrow. Maiko Snow Resort were hoping to be able to open from tomorrow but they have announced that to be delayed and will give an update tomorrow afternoon. Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai also on standby and no doubt Yuzawa Park the same. Basically they are all just waiting for snow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 4PM UPDATE It's still snowing. :) Everyone is happy about that, but resort types are running around frantically gearing up for their season debuts! Resorts that have announced that they will be open tomorrow morning (Saturday 15th December): - GALA Yuzawa (Melody and Entertainment courses in the Central Area) - Yuzawa Kogen (Ropeway, Cosmos lift, Summit panorama lift) - Kandatsu Kogen (details unconfirmed) - Joetsu Kokusai (4 lifts - Nagamine quad, Panorama quad and two pairs) And of course... - Kagura should be 'fully' open (with the Tashiro Ropeway opening) - More of Naeba will be opening Resorts that are on stand-by, but whether they will or not tomorrow is still unconfirmed: - Iwappara - Yuzawa Nakazato - Yuzawa Park - Maiko Snow Resort There's going to be a lot of information to gather and put together for the report tomorrow morning... sorry if it is a bit late! --- Original report from this morning Morning from Yuzawa. Better news this morning! First of all, it's snowing and coming in nicely from the north. And I am measuring a decent chunk on the ground too and counting with snow forecast for the day. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall and they are opening Giant and Technical courses today. They are saying that their top Kagura Number 5 pair lift will open from 1st January 2019. From tomorrow the Tashiro Ropeway will also be open. From what I can see they seem to be saying that 'all areas' will be skiable from tomorrow so hopefully they can make that happen. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it now feels like winter has properly started. :) It was snowing really heavily at times during the day yesterday and piling up quite quickly. I am measuring 32cm of snowfall since my report yesterday. I have decided to try and keep things simple this morning because there are so many details, and will update the report later on with more. OK so first off Kagura are reporting over 30cm of fresh snowfall. And Kagura is now officially 'fully open' (with a few exceptions!) as the Tashiro Area opens and pretty much all of the terrain is available. A bunch of other ski resorts are now open in Yuzawa. At GALA Yuzawa, the Chuo central area is opening this morning with three courses available - Melody, Entertainment and Jiji. Kandatsu Kogen, Yuzawa Kogen, Yuzawa Park and Joetsu Kokusai are also part open from this morning. Maiko are still keeping quiet but I would expect them to be opening up from tomorrow (that's simply a guess). It was raining last night but I'm glad to report that this morning it is snowing again with Kagura resort reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 10cm of fresh. I am measuring 12cm to add to these reports and it is continuing to snow now. The more the better as it seems we can expect temps to remain on the mild side with the chance of rain looming on the forecasts over the coming days. Just keep cold please! Just a slight bit of snow overnight (after some rain, so rather wet), with Kagura reporting 3cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko reporting 10cm (presumably higher up). And as the morning has progressed, the clouds have been clearing and right now there is a lot of blue sky and sunshine over Yuzawa. A high of around 6C is expected. It's a lovely morning. As much as we would prefer the snow clouds to be over us and delivering! We are still looking at warmer conditions late week into the weekend and really hoping to avoid rain and get snow instead. (Obviously). We can just hope temps remain on the lower side of the forecasts. Thanks to that blast of winter last week, it's feeling like we are not quite there yet once again. Ski resorts that planned to be open by now are mostly part open, though - apart from Kagura - it is limited openings as we wait for more snow to get things deep. NASPA Ski Garden and Ishiuchi Maruyama (with the unveiling of their impressive new gear) plan to open from Friday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and Happy Christmas! It is of course Christmas morning and the sun is out. Early on, the mountains are looking beautiful and there is a ice-frosted look to the trees outside my place. We had a bit of snow falling yesterday and while it didn't amount to much down at town level, there has been some fresh on the mountains... more to be found the higher up you go. The only reports of fresh snow that I can find early on this morning is 5cm reported by Ishiuchi Maruyama. We are set for a fine day today, perhaps clouding over later on and with a high of around +4C. Feels a bit windy. On to that forecast - and it is still looking very snowy indeed with snow lined up daily from late tomorrow into New Year. We could be in for some major snowfall which is exactly what we want. Really looking forward to that. Big numbers please. Don't let us down, Nature! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. [** Updated at 9:30am ** ] As I posted earlier on this morning in a quick report - this is much, much, much better! The snow has arrived. Close on 50cm of fresh snow on the ground and probably more on the mountain. Kagura are reporting 50cm of fresh. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 'more than 50cm'. Ishiuchi Maruyama are also reporting 40-50cm. Loads of snow. And it is still snowing. It feels like 'Snow Country' again. With this sudden heavy snowfall there are a few interesting things going on. The Tashiro area of Kagura is closed this morning due to the weather conditions - Kagura is open up to the Kagura Number 1 lift. Some other areas are opening up courses, but some that were open are actually closed as the resorts get to grip with all of the new snow - for example, Iwappara early on has the top area closed. But Maiko Snow Resort is pretty much full open now apart from one lift. And access to Ishiuchi Maruyama is now ok from all three base areas. Expect things to settle down pretty quickly though and I'd expect more to be open tomorrow. This snowfall is due to continue for at least a few more days so it is going to build up from here. Brilliant. It's what we have been waiting for and it will really transform conditions. So just to re-cap. All of the ski hills in the area - Yuzawa town and neighbouring Minamiuonuma - are now at least part open. The only exception now is (the legendary) Mt Granview, which plans to be open from tomorrow morning. If you are planning on coming to Yuzawa over the next few days, get wrapped up and ready to enjoy these full-on winter conditions. Roads are being cleared but there may be delays and extra care is needed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. What a few days it has been. After the report yesterday we cleared our measuring area and by 5pm there was another 17cm on there. The snow eased off for a while some serious snow shovelling was enjoyed. The measuring spot was cleared again and this morning there is a further 33cm on there. So I make that a very pleasing total of 50cm snowfall since yesterday. 'The resorts that report' are not quite reporting so much as that - perhaps to not frighten people. (Actually, there's some evidence that such thinking actually exists, believe it or not). Kagura and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30cm; Maiko are reporting 40cm. They're all impressive numbers though. The quick transformation that I was wishing for up until a few days ago has happened with most resorts now at least part open, many of them mostly open and some of them fully open. We have tried to keep the resort-specific information below up to date and correct! And there are now some very nice snow conditions to enjoy. Wind is affecting Kagura again - the Tashiro area is closed again this morning and they plan to be open up until the Kaguran Number 1 romance (pair) lift - if conditions ease off they might get the quad moving. ----- The forecast still has snow continuing over the coming week with perhaps a break in the clouds early week. So it is going to continue building up.
