The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It started snowing in the early hours of the morning in Hakuba. We have fresh snowfall of perhaps between 3-7cm (and counting) across the valley at the moment. Wind speed is about 5m/s, it is a very grey sky out there and vision is poor with the cloud covering all nine resorts. Taking a look at the webcams though it looks like some decent snowflakes are falling up there. The good news is that it is still snowing and the prediction for today is well into the evening with powder snowfall later on. With present temperatures of -1 and 1 degree up to the early evening, Hakuba should have a nice amount of snowfall to keep people occupied this weekend. From today more of Happo-one is open again - they have the Kokusai No3 pair and Panorama pair lifts moving again for the weekend and also the Alpen quad lift - but other than that there do not seem to be any changes in resort operations just as yet. They will certainly be looking to open up more just as soon as they can though. For now... top bits! The weekend of course brings traffic from many parts of Japan and the roads were a little congested on main arterial routes earlier on. Take care driving. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The weather today here in Hakuba is cloudy with patches of blue sky, rising to around 6 degree Celsius. There is a cool breeze around Hakuba and it is quite pleasant to walk around - local restaurants and bars are gradually opening up for trade as the ski resorts opened earlier than planned. It's still generally quiet though as perhaps you might expect. The snow around village area now gone we look towards the next snowfall. It looks like we might get some rain in the village later on today but fingers crossed that will be snow showers by late in the evening. Overnight and into tomorrow is looking positive for a decent snowfall on the mountains and tomorrow should be cold and snowy. Clearer conditions are set to return on Sunday, but hopefully by then we will have had a nice topup of snow and perhaps the resorts might be able to start opening up more terrain. We'll just have to wait and see. OK, time for a round-up of where we stand with the resorts at the moment. Hakuba Goryu remains open with the Gondola and the top No1 pair lift operating. Hakuba 47 has announced that they will be re-opening the Route 8 course and Line E lift up top from tomorrow (Saturday 1st) - hopefully right through until the end of the season this time! As things stand it will remain accessed via Goryu. Happo-one has two trails with Usagidaira and a groomed Kurobishi Trail prepared early this morning. The Adam Gondola, Usagidaira pair lift and Kurobishi No2 quad lifts are operating. At Tsugaike this morning it is sunny and the clouds haven't moved in yet, and the upper part of the resort is open with the Eve Gondola and Hannoki pair lifts operating. Hakuba Cortina plans to open on December 15th and Hakuba Iwatake is planning a December 20th opening.. whether they will open earlier if we get lots of snow? Don't know, no word on that, but I will let you know if there are any signs. First off though, we need that snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After the snow of yesterday, this morning the sun is out. All change! It's remaining cold, a very cold morning here - Hakuba 47 was reporting a temperature of -7 degrees a bit earlier and I can certainly believe it. But with the sun out things should warm up a bit during the day and we might see temperatures rising to around 6 or 7 degrees in the village in the early afternoon. Resort operatings today seemingly the same as yesterday but hopefully with the next snow due late Friday into Saturday, we might see more open up this coming weekend - will let you know. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from a very winter-like and snowy Hakuba. There's not much to see this morning actually as it's an almost total white-out, where I am anyway. The cars are moving slowly on the roads as the people who still haven't changed their tyres to snow tyres suddenly regret leaving it so late! There's a good 10-20cm of snow to report this morning, perhaps more in places. Close to 20cm outside my door and it is still coming down now so if this continues during the day we should be feeling much more positive after that wet and dreary day that we had yesterday. It's still relatively wet snow, but forecast to get drier as the day goes on. Goryu are reporting 15cm of fresh snow on their slopes. 47 are actually closed once again - the rain yesterday did it's damage that the snow so far hasn't been able to fix up, but with the snow coming down as it it that will probably soon change once again. As much as I'd like to tell you that this snow is due to continue for a week.... it's not! Tomorrow we will very probably see lots of the sun and it will be much warmer than today. It will probably be the weekend before we can realistically expect any real new snowfall. So come on, let's have lots today please. Early season is so complicated, ne? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is clear and sunny across all of Hakuba this morning, an absolutely beautiful morning indeed. At the base in the village the temperature is around 0C but seems destined to rise quickly and top out in the afternoon at around 8 degrees. For now though it is chilly and the air is cool. The sun is out and all is good. Though we could do with a nice fresh dump of snow of course! Hakuba 47, Hakuba Goryu, Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen all remain operating as they have been with early skiers and boarders taking advantage of the un-crowded trails. Yesterday the higher parts of mountains actually enjoyed a bit of a topup of snowfall during the afternoon, which was of course welcome. What you really want to know is when are we going to get our snow, right? Well, unfortunately it is looking likely that we will be rained on before we get snowed on. In the village at least, where tomorrow looks set to be a rainy day. The mountains may well be getting a new coat of snow at the same time, so fingers crossed on that. Tuesday should see a return to colder conditions. I won't add in the snow depth numbers to the report below yet. For the record Goryu have 35cm and Happo 60cm as their official numbers at the moment. There's still decent cover up there which is good, but there's hardly any snow remaining on the lower areas now. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . No rain early on which was good but it has started to rain lightly as temperatures rise somewhat. The forecast for Hakuba still has us down for rain in village and snow at higher elevations. We have the top areas of the Hakuba Goryu and 47 (access via Goryu) and Happo-one resorts open this morning. Tsugaike Kogen are also opening up a 840m long run up top today. It is a somewhat grey and cloudy morning with the upper parts of the mountain covered in cloud. The forecast for the coming days is mixed. Tomorrow looks set to be a cold one followed by cleared weather on Sunday and warmer temperatures on Monday, along with rain even on the mountains. That will hopefully turn into snow as we move into Tuesday. I'll keep you updated with the latest. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well, the weekend is over now and a number of people were out there enjoying their first slides of the season. Hakuba Goryu have decided to stay open as long as the snow will allow and the Gondola as well as the top No1 pair lift are both due to be moving today. Both Hakuba 47 and Happo-one will not be open today, so it is just Goryu. Sorry I couldn't get that information out last night as intended - some of the work being done on upcoming updates to SnowJapan prevented me from being able to do that. (Lots of big changes coming!) Anyway this morning we have lots of blue skies above the mountains, the sun is out and it is all looking very beautiful - the low lying clouds over the village area just adding to the dramatic scenes. It doesn't look like we can realistically expect much snow during the week, perhaps some up top tomorrow night and then later on in the week. I'll update again in a few days. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The ski resorts in Hakuba are enjoying the dump from a few days ago. Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Happo-one will open this weekend 17th and 18th November for keen skiers and boarders. Yes, Happo will be open as well for the weekend - just part of the top Panorama run. Current temperatures are around 6 degrees Celsius, light breezes of 2m/s and a beautiful blue sky stretching across the resorts. Ski patrol did a test run and checked the courses today and the resorts have now designated areas which are safe for skiing. All of the courses will not open as enough snowfall accummulated on certain parts of the mountain. Certain trails still have trees and debris, rocks and unsafe areas which are noticeable so definitely a no ski zone. Please be aware of the markings around the trails. The weekend expects warmer temperatures and sunshine with some cloud however, but around the early hours of tomorrow morning fresh snow is expected. Sunday's outlook is clear skies with possible rain and snow in the evening. Mother nature has kicked of this season early, a few weekends of early ski days is exciting for Hakuba residents and visitors. We'll bring you any more information as we get it. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Wow, yesterday was perhaps a surprise for many people even if we were expecting snow to fall. Different measurements in different places but around the village it was 25cm in places, and some people over at Happo were reporting up to a full 1m of snow up at 1850m. Pretty impressive hey? So impressive that we are going to have an early start to the season it seems. This morning Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 have announced that they will be opening on Saturday 17th November and Sunday 18th November. For the moment, Goryu are saying it is open 'from Saturday' while 47 are saying that the opening is just for the weekend. What will be open? It looks like the Hakuba Goryu gondola will be operating from 8:15am until 4:15pm, with the Alps No1 pair lift operating from 8:30am until 4pm. The top Hakuba 47 Line E pair lift will be open. The courses open will be the top Hakuba Goryu Alps daira Panorama course (850m) and the top Hakuba 47 R8 course by the Line E lift. Note that the 47 Gondola and Line C lifts will not be operating and so the only way up the mountain is via the the Hakuba gondola, so that's your base! Lift tickets will cost 2400 yen for adults and seniors, 1250 yen for younger children. In other news, Happo are talking about the possibility of opening on 23rd November. We are seeing some sun and blue skies as well today after that lovely surprise yesterday and we may see more tomorrow. Then a chance of snow again over the wekened, but likely not like we say yesterday. Looks like it could be a great start to the season, though keep in mind that it is still very early on and we could well see long spells of clear weather before the season properly gets underway. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Last night the cold winds from Russia blew across the warm waters of the Sea of Japan rising to cloud which formed over the mountainous west coasts of Japan. I'm happy to report that Hakuba's location was right on target for this! The snow is now dry and accumulating across all the ski resorts in the valley. We've got up to a fresh 40cm on the upper trails and around the towns the scenery has changed completely. A sudden finish to autumn... let's hope it can stick around. It is breezy, cold and currently at 1 degree Celsius. The snowfall is pouring down but the ski resorts officially open in December. Check each resort for their official dates as the lifts will operate at these times, also the winter staff and local food and beverage outlets plan to open officially along with the ski resorts. If there's enough snow, expect possible openings sooner than the official dates. Across the day the temperatures will drop and freezing conditions during the early hours of the morning will be consistent. The forecast has some more snow tomorrow, however the prediction for the rest of the week is unsure - we will keep you posted. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Clear blue skies over Shiga Kogen this morning. Sun screen needed. It was a fairly cold start but has warmed up to close to 0C now. Some thin wispy clouds seems to have been forming in places as we get into the afternoon which is pretty much in line with what the forecast told us to expect. Light rain or hopefully more like light snow overnight tonight perhaps but tomorrow and Sunday generally looking likely to be clear and sunny with moderate winds likely.
