  • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 2nd December 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 55cm Posted on Saturday 2nd December 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Some fresh snow to enjoy yesterday - I'm hearing up to nearly 10cm on the slopes in places - and there's a bit more to report this morning. I am measuring 5cm on the ground and currently it is snowing lightly. Not as much as we thought we might get, but still... all good. Decent visibility this morning too and not much of a wind, so it should be a good morning. The forecast seems to be pointing to clearer skies in the afternoon. And sunshine tomorrow. This morning it's the opening ceremony thing going on over at Kumanoyu from 10am. Apparently, some members of AKB48 will be there. I'm not an expert but I don't think they are the 'main' 'leader' members - Team 8, I hear whatever that means - but still fascinatingly exciting stuff. I never thought I would be typing AKB48 in my Shiga Kogen reports! OK so these areas of Shiga Kogen that are now currently part open: - Ichinose Family - Takamagahara Mammoth - Yakebitaiyama - Kumanoyu - Yokoteyama They're all part open and none of them are 'linked up' as such yes, so it's a case of choose your location and ski. Or indeed, snowboard. Yakebitaiyama have their Number 2 Gondola moving this morning so you can ride down from the top to base. Snow is still relatively thin on the ground, but there's choice if you want it. And AKB48. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. It's December and things should start getting going more and more now as the weeks pass. This morning sees the Yokoteyama, Ichinose Family and Takamagahara Mammoth resort areas opening - properly... and partly. It's all a bit limited still of course. In this early part of the season when only part areas are open, I will try to keep the below list up to date with what is open in each area. This morning there was a lot of cloud earlier on, but at 9:30am it's lovely and sunny with more and more blue sky. The forecast has some snow lined up for tonight with more sunshine due over the weekend. • Shiga Kogen Now: Thursday 27th April 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1157cm Posted on Thursday 27th April 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Shiga Kogen. It's keeping cold. And guess what, there was even a bit more snow falling last night. It doesn't feel like late April. This morning it's generally cloudy, though forecasts do talk of clearer skies due for today. We can perhaps expect changeable weather conditions over the next few days. Please do keep an eye on the forecast page. As we head into Golden Week and the end of April, the official snow depth at some of the resort areas is still around the 2m mark. Impressive. A few more ski lifts will be opening up for the weekend - for more details on what plans to be open for Golden Week see below. I believe it is up-to-date and correct but of course subject to change. Anyway, have a good first-bit-of-Golden-Week. During the winter season, the section of the Route 292 main road that connects Shiga Kogen (from Yokoteyama) with Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture is closed due to all the snow. That section of road has now re-opened which means that you can now get to Shiga Kogen via Gunma Prefecture from the east - either for spring skiing and snowboarding or just for sightseeing. The road has had to be 'cut out' of the snow meaning that in places there are impressive snow walls on either side. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Did you have a good 'Golden Week'? Yesterday was of course the last day of the ski season for several areas of Shiga Kogen and from today, only parts of the Okushiga Kogen, Kumanoyu and Yokoteyama/Shibutoge areas of Shiga Kogen remain open. Still very decent spring snow left over to play in on the open slopes. We have done very well this season. This is going to be my last regular reports of the season. I will try to post an update each week now until the ski lifts close. What a very season it has been for Shiga Kogen. We have enjoyed some very respectable and regular snowfall this time round and I encourage you to look back through my archive reports for the season as well as the ‘Snowfall Analysis’ page to relive it all. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We did in the end get a bit of fresh snow yesterday but this morning we are back to blue skies and sunshine with a bit of cloud. Not really much else to report... may be a snow shower here or there tonight and tomorrow but generally calm weather and a chance of sun over the next few days. Next snowfall due Thursday. The weekend crowds are gone and things are quieter. Oh yes, I heard that the weather folk have announced their 6 month forecast. What's most important to us of course is what happens in March and April and the forecast generally seems to be for temperatures to be a bit higher than average. That's all very vague of course, but thought I would just share it. We'll take it day by day here right through until May! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen. And I am happy to report that after that unwelcome spring storm, we're back to winter this morning. It is colder and light snow is falling right now. Just a bit of fresh snow overnight, not enough for a full reset, but certainly better than yesterday. And while it is snowing lightly here in Maruike right now as I write this, visibility is good and I can actually see some blue sky over towards Ichinose and the sun is coming out in places so it feels like things are going to clear up. The forecast currently seems to show some more snow on and off over the next few days, mixed in with some sun at times. A fairly wet and heavy kind of snow, but it's much better than rain so we'll take it. With the forecasts telling us to expect temperatures to drop and the chance of heavy snow overnight tonight, I am hoping that in my report tomorrow I might be able to talk of a decent amount of fresh snowfall on the ground. Snowfall is forecast to continue through tomorrow. I am really liking this season. I was just looking at the numbers (see bottom of this report and the Snowfall Analysis page) - by the end of January last year I had reported 316cm of snowfall. Until today, I have recorded 627cm! So this season I have observed almost double the amount of snow as last season... and we're not at the end of January yet.
