Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 371cm Posted on Friday 29th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day when I need to get out and go before new snow reports are issued - but I'll write this part and hang on to the last minute and put in whatever fresh data there is in the listing below (* indicates an old report). The good news: it's snowing again. As we've seen so much this year, the snow is coming down pretty steadily, but not with the great big flakes that are so common when we're getting a really good snowfall. Maybe that will change through the day, as heavy snow is predicted for later today (luckily, heavy rain is also on the forecast, and we appear to have dodged that particular precipitation bullet). Not much accumulation yet, but if it keeps snowing like it is now we will have a little extra for some snowpacks that actually went down during the week with that sun and nice weather (I told you not to get sucked in by those bluebird skies!). It's still pretty rough for those traveling into the backcountry, as we just don't have enough snow to cover up the saplings. The snow itself became pretty stable this week, following the sluffing after the last big fall. With that sun crust in some areas, though, be careful if we do see heavy snowfall today and into the weekend, as it could form a weak layer and increase the avalanche danger. Generally, a little time and Myoko's moderate temperatures will see these kinds of layers disappear fairly quickly, but that doesn't mean we can't have some persistent problems in the backcountry. Communications is key: talk to as many people as you can, and remember a snowpit is best thought of as a confirmation of information you already have. I'll try and do the same and share local info right here in this listing. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 406cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We had a pretty nice snowfall over night in Myoko, with about 35 cm of fresh to be snowthrown this morning (I'm actually getting a little use out of my trusty monster machine). The ski areas aren't reporting much additional depth to the snowpack reports, but it did fall. Not really a heavy snow, but of course welcome. Looks like we'll continue to get some light snow later today and on through the weekend, although it's not snowing at the moment. It's kind of a slow news time, to be honest.... the Myoko Police did issue a warning following some injuries and theft on the slopes (including one fatality involving a foreign national hitting a Japanese person), but still not much by general standards. Backcountry hasn't been much of an issue, because there isn't that much snow, and there's not open space to get into much trouble. Still lots of small trees to get hung up in, though. So I'm looking out the window toward some gray, cloud-obscured peaks, wondering what it's going to do next. Kind of an "unh" day, I'd say. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 370cm Posted on Monday 25th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow keeps coming down, even if we haven't seen the big increases that we keep getting promised. Yesterday was a morning of good snowfall, the real Myoko kind (and it was a little colder than I had reported, actually, around -6° even at 10 am). But it didn't want to keep going, and we saw some sun before the snow came back in the afternoon as well. That, too, looked pretty promising, but by the later afternoon the snow had changed to partly sunny skies and some very cold strong winds (made for some especially unpleasant snowthrowing, with cold wind on the nose enhanced with snow flying everywhere). Light snow continues to fall this morning, though, which is always welcome, even if it probably won't build up to the potential 40cm the weather reports were talking about this morning. We're still doing OK compared to a lot of places, but the snow just doesn't want to keep on falling for extended periods of time as it normally would. It's cold, too, with the car thermometer reading -9° at around 8 this morning. The backcountry remains very bushy; we could still use a couple of meters of good heavy snow to finally push all that stuff down and get it under the surface. A sort of test team is out there right now, so I can give some more on-the-scene reporting tomorrow. It is getting better, but nobody's going to be doing massive powder turns for a while, unless this light snow decides to keep falling for many days, which looks unlikely. The freezing line will be heading up the mountain again toward the end of the week, with heavy rain even a possibility on Saturday. If that would just change to a heavy fall of physically heavy snow, maybe we could get rid of that bush and tree problem even faster! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 330cm Posted on Sunday 24th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is really coming down now; the flakes are getting bigger and bigger, and the volume is increasing. Reports are for some serious snow later in the day, and it already looks good now. Not too much wind and it's hard to see for the snow. This is just what we want! The figures for this morning don't show much increase yet, but hopefully we'll have much higher snowpack numbers tomorrow! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 135cm Posted on Tuesday 29th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After the stars came out last night things really turned around, and we have at least 30cm of fresh at the base of Akakan! A very nice, partially expected but very welcome sight today. Needed, too; the snow was pretty nice, actually, on the hill yesterday, but there were some rocks and dirt popping out here and there. Now Akakan is reporting a 100cm base, which is always good news. Snow keeps on falling, so hopefully we can get closer to normal for this time of year soon! Not all reports are in, but I want to get these out earlier; I'll mark where no new info has come in (just add 30+cm to the depths!) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 65cm Posted on Saturday 26th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm sitting here waiting for the official report to come in (which since you're reading this, have in fact arrived). The good, great, wonderful news is that we have snow on the ground. Not a whole lot, but enough to fire up the mighty snowthrower and for ski areas to start opening up (belated Merry Christmas present for all!). And they're starting to come in! Most everyone is open, at least a little bit. Kyukamura and Tangram are not open; Suginohara has not sent a report to the town or updated its own website today, so I don't know what they're doing. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 40cm Posted on Sunday 20th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I wasn't going to send out a report today, once I woke up and saw perfect blue skies, felt that warm sun on my face, and noticed that there was no additional snow on top of the 20cm or so out there. But, much to my surprise, three resorts have decided to open up on a VERY limited basis and let people get out there and scrape the snow off the grass! Not great skiing, perhaps, but a nice day to pose in your gear, bask in the sun and enjoy some nice views. Akakura Onsen is opening up the Yodel section, with one lift running. You have to take a shuttle bus up from the base area, of course (and just to let you know how little snow there is, that shuttle bus heads up on a road that should be covered with snow and under the ski runs). For the families, Kyukamura opens today, then closes until more snow falls. And Madarao has opened one run and one lift, and isn't saying if it will stay open (looks like it will). As I have written here in the past, snow conditions can be dodgy until Christmas or so. And, sure enough, the first heavy snow forecast is for Christmas Day..... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is falling today; looking a lot better, although the total on the ground is still only about 20cm (which is also the official word from Akakura Kanko). I see a lot of cars passing by the house loaded with skis; I thought maybe one of the areas decided to let people chew up the grass, but I think it's more likely that those drivers weren't checking SnowJapan diligently enough.... Just playing the waiting game now; all the areas would have liked to open by tomorrow, but they'll need a lot more base before they can get out the groomers and pack things down a bit. Regardless of your views on groomed vs. natural snow, they really do need to do that—there's a lot of interesting stuff out there on the hill that needs to be well covered. Not much, now; don't get too excited just yet, as nice as that white stuff looks. MAYBE three centimeters at the base of Akakan... But there is more predicted for later in the day, and it is colder than it's been so far. I hear that the managers from some of the local ski areas went over to Togakushi to get some divine intervention. Well, it is known as a power spot, and it is snowing now, so can't complain. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy to announce the first real snow of the year today! Woke up to the sound of thunder rolling down from the mountains—always a good sign! Maybe 10cm on the ground as of 8 am, with a pretty good wind coming in from the south/west (it's always hard to tell here at the base of Mt. Myoko, as those western winds we really want to see bringing in the snow will appear southerly after swinging through the gap between Mt. Kurohime and Mt. Myoko. Since first going online in 1999, the integrity of this website has always been our top priority, and it is something we are not prepared to compromise. All content is carefully created and written by humans who share a passion for the subject and what SnowJapan stands for. About SnowJapan.com About the daily reporting on SnowJapan.com
