  • Myoko Now: Sunday 10th February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 77cm Snowfall at base this season 1329cm Posted on Sunday 10th February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Way more snow than expected today, and it keeps coming. Light, powdery snow (probably the best of the season). Lots of people out to enjoy it, too, with the parking lots filling up, and the access roads clogged with cars unprepared for the worst (don't put your chains on only when you come to a stop... Might want to get those on early, city folk!). Pretty good winds, too, so lots of blowing and drifting snow. As I've noted, my spot for measuring snow depth is pretty well sheltered, so I stand by today's big numbers, even when the ski areas don't add on as much. The total snowpack figure is really close to what they have; what falls in a day will of course settle a lot, but if you're skiing, you've got a lot of depth to play with today! In fact, with more international travelers now renting cars, it's just gotten worse. I refuse to apologize to the idiot who decided it would be OK to block the exit to the bus turnaround at Ikenotaira this morning so he could go over to the rental shop. I hollered that he was blocking buses (and me), and he said I should be polite... Just wait until the local bus drivers "inform" you of your poor decision (you won't understand them, but you'll know they're not at all polite). Follow local rules folks! People do stuff for good reasons, and sometimes that means you have to be like everyone else and park and then walk to the rental shop. Especially when deep, blowing snow means it's really tough just to be driving around. Don't need additional roadblocks by blockheads. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has stopped, for the moment at least. A pretty dark sky out there, though, reminds us that possibly heavy snow is forecast for tonight. Snow pretty much throughout the day yesterday, and it was nice, snowflakey crystals that make for nice skiing. And it's a three-day weekend, so there are a few more cars in the parking lots, and some short lines for gondolas and main lifts (nothing like the days of the Japan ski boom, for those who can remember amusement park-like waits just to get on lifts....) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is back, and it's coming down hard. The sun was/is out at Suginohara, it seems, but it's remained overcast with solid snowfall all morning at the base of Akakan. Pretty strong winds through the night and into the day, and there are some strong gusts with swirling snow from time to time. About 25 cm of fresh at 9am, and it's continuing to come down steadily. There is a wet layer underneath the new snow that is a bit of a concern; it's still wet and apparently bonding well with the new snow, at least at base level. Could be a more dangerous situation higher up where the wet may be ice, and a lot of snow on top could mean easy sliding of the new. Good time to take it a little easy in the backcountry! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Kind of a dust on crust morning today, although the crust is not all that bad and will probably improve with this morning's sun and its warmth. About 7 centimeters of fresh today, on top of about 30cm of really wet snow. Out in the trees, maybe not so much fun, but a great day for the groomers (hey, you can always improve that turn of yours!). Make friends with a liftie, enjoy a cold one in the sun. Etc. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny in Myoko, although the day started with a little bit of light snow. Should be nice out there, but things are going to get weird from tomorrow afternoon, with the freezing level going way up to 2650 meters. Higher than Mt. Myoko. Rain is on the forecast for late Sunday and into Monday, but it's going to be cold right after that. The fast switch from rain to cold could cause an ice layer to form, something to keep in mind next week if you're heading into the backcountry. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 59cm Snowfall at base this season 1187cm Posted on Friday 1st February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another good day of snow. Light snow. More snow than expected. Again. Pretty good wind overnight, too, which shaped this nice, light snow into kind of amazing waves and dunes around my house (which is open to north winds) less so at base level, where we (and most of the ski areas) are more sheltered from gusts by forests and hills. And it's still snowing pretty heavily, probably coming down at a rate of a few fresh centimeters every hour. Another case from this season of we either get a whole lot, or just a little bit, and definitely more days when we get a lot. Having said this, though, it seems like the ski areas have hardly added anything new to their snow depths, where right here at the base of Akakura Kanko we got a lot, and the total keeps inching up.... So I'm sure some won't believe me, but I'm recording what I found, and it's not what the resorts are reporting! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1128cm Posted on Wednesday 30th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice and sunny out there today. Yesterday's snow has really settled nicely, so hopefully things are a little more stable off in the backcountry. Just a little more snow fell through the morning yesterday before the snow stopped. I noticed all the neighbors were taking advantage of the break to get things cleared off (and I was up on a roof, too, getting that weight off the building). Could be snow again from tomorrow, perhaps heavy into evening. That freezing line is going to head up over the weekend, though, so even rain might fall on the resort if the freezing does in fact go up to 2100 meters. I hope not... Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 56cm Snowfall at base this season 1125cm Posted on Tuesday 29th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back to snow that exceeds expectations: I seem to remember the forecast was for 20 to 40cm, we got 56cm. It has really been coming down since last night. The sun has threatened to come out occasionally, but as I tap away here now we're back to a vision-diminishing steady fall. And it sometimes is falling horizontally as well, as we have some pretty strong winds at times. It's dense snow as well; it was a pretty good slog out to the measuring spot, even with a trusty shovel in hand. I can happily say, though, that the windows around the house are now clear so I am no longer living in a dark cave.... For those going offpiste, it's going to likewise be a hard climb and probably a very slow descent. It's also increasingly risky, with some areas wind-scoured and now potentially covered with dense, wind-loaded snow. The Japan Avalanche Network is now warning of extreme avalanche danger in Myoko. Please be especially careful until the snow settles and conditions improve. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry to be late this morning; Lots of blowing snow and wind meant a car that needed to be yanked out of a drift.... And the usual hours of fun digging things out. Luckily, we didn't get anywhere near the possible one meter overnight, although with all that blowing it can be hard to tell. No drifts around the measurement area, so I think today's total is pretty accurate. Wind, though; much wind. It's going to be tough going outside of the resorts, and there could be significant wind loading of lee slopes, greatly increasing the danger of slab avalanches (as we had a few days ago). The sun is out now, but snow is still falling, being blown in from over the mountain. Crazy weather, in short. • Myoko Now: Saturday 26th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 1024cm Posted on Saturday 26th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, it's started. Not a huge amount yet, exactly in the middle of Niigata Prefecture's forecast of 20 to 40cm by 9 am this morning (at 32cm). The same report for the next 24 hours, though, predicts 50 to 100cm. Yes, a potential meter overnight. Kind of quiet right at this moment, with some clearing to the south. That's happened a couple of times, though, with the almost-sun being followed by pretty heavy snow. So let's keep watching (keep plowing to make room for more snow). Lots of accidents around here lately, and it's a bit discouraging. An avalanche death yesterday (slab avalanche, caused by all that wind of a few days ago making for a wind-loaded slope), a boarder who crashed upside and couldn't get out of the snow; a jump high up a mountain going wrong (another fatality), and a broken leg after a meeting with a tree. Three of these were with international guests, something we have not had much. There's a lot of snow out there; there is a lot of difficult terrain. Personally I think people should stop watching ski videos, or at least realize that the pros really think out things a lot before they jump off stuff, or climb over the peak or ski at speed between trees. • Hakuba Now: Saturday 26th January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 366cm Weather overview Snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Saturday 26th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The snow continues. It's powder all over the place this morning. A quick round up of what the reports are reporting in terms of new snowfall since yesterday: 15-35cm at Goryu 20-40cm at Hakuba 47 45-60cm at Hakuba Cortina (including the 10-15cm they were reporting during the day yesterday) Not bad for a day's snow! Other resorts who don't share such information are similarly seeing jumps in their snow depths. It's -7 degrees in village and close to -11C at Usagidaira on Happo. Winds not as prevelant as we thought they would be this morning - at 1400m on Happo an average wind speed of 0.8m/s with a strong of 2.4m/s as of 9am. Visibility will be poor out on the slopes today pretty much everywhere and a look round the webcams confirms this. Best visibility at the low Minekata! So now fantastic mountain views today, but some fine snow conditions. The heavy snow brings with it increasingly dangerous avalanche conditions especially out of bounds. The usual rules and common sense apply. Take care out there. There'll be plenty of untouched excellent powder on the resort runs this weekend and no need to contemplate straying. By tomorrow the snow should beging ease off and there's a chance the sun might make an appearance as well. • Myoko Now: Friday 25th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 992cm Posted on Friday 25th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A break in the snowfall....until I was finished checking for this morning, of course! We even had a little bit of sun peeking in from the southeast, and we can barely see some blue skies over Nagano City. But light snow has once again begun to fall, and tomorrow is the first day this season where we have heavy snow forecast all day. And into the next. Right now it's alternating between sun and snow. I wanted to add something, too, because we've had some really bad accidents around here recently, including two fatalities. Two were outside the resorts, one in. In really deep snow, it makes sense to have your buddies close by; if you get upside down, it can go really bad really fast. Having someone there to pull you out can really be life or death! And, in the backcountry, you might think twice about pulling off the big jumps you see in videos; If you've been on actual shoots, you see how much time both photographers and athletes spend setting up the shot. You don't want to be on the hill with broken bones (and the helicopter can't fly most days here because of visibility).
