Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 45cm
Snowfall at base this season 1069cm

Posted on Sunday 27th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Sorry to be late this morning; Lots of blowing snow and wind meant a car that needed to be yanked out of a drift.... And the usual hours of fun digging things out.

Luckily, we didn't get anywhere near the possible one meter overnight, although with all that blowing it can be hard to tell. No drifts around the measurement area, so I think today's total is pretty accurate.

Wind, though; much wind. It's going to be tough going outside of the resorts, and there could be significant wind loading of lee slopes, greatly increasing the danger of slab avalanches (as we had a few days ago). The sun is out now, but snow is still falling, being blown in from over the mountain.

Crazy weather, in short.
