New snowfall at base 56cm
Snowfall at base this season 1125cm

Back to snow that exceeds expectations: I seem to remember the forecast was for 20 to 40cm, we got 56cm. It has really been coming down since last night. The sun has threatened to come out occasionally, but as I tap away here now we're back to a vision-diminishing steady fall.
And it sometimes is falling horizontally as well, as we have some pretty strong winds at times. It's dense snow as well; it was a pretty good slog out to the measuring spot, even with a trusty shovel in hand. I can happily say, though, that the windows around the house are now clear so I am no longer living in a dark cave....
For those going offpiste, it's going to likewise be a hard climb and probably a very slow descent. It's also increasingly risky, with some areas wind-scoured and now potentially covered with dense, wind-loaded snow. The Japan Avalanche Network is now warning of extreme avalanche danger in Myoko. Please be especially careful until the snow settles and conditions improve.
