Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 697cm Posted on Thursday 10th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny and cold after the big dump. After a big snow like that it almost seems like there's no more moisture left in the air to make clouds. Of which there are only a few right now. It was really cold for Myoko, too; the outside thermometer read -9° earlier, but the sun is supposed to warm things up considerably during the day. I hope it stays cold enough that the snow conditions remain good; OK, let's stick our collective neck out and predict that it will be a great day for getting out in the sun and sliding on great cold snow. • Myoko Now: Wednesday 9th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 92cm Snowfall at base this season 694cm Posted on Wednesday 9th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We have been slammed. Buried. Ensconsed in snow. It was pretty windy through the night, so there was a lot of drifting. I sat inside while the team gallantly made it out to our study area. The official depth out there, in a non-drifted area, was 92cm (they also poked around our driveway, and found everything from 80 to one meter. So let's go with 92!). It's also really light, so people probably should be more than a little careful going offpiste. Sluffing is definitely a possibility, and those narrow valleys that are everywhere here would be a really bad place to slowly slide into. Lotte Arai is not running this morning at least; check their website before you go! (actually, they just opened Sanroku No. 1; more opening later?) Kyukamura Runrun is starting a little late, too. Suginohara might be a bit delayed while they clear snow. But it will be worth it! Good snow for everyone... • Myoko Now: Tuesday 9th April 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 1705cm Posted on Tuesday 9th April 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Wasn't sure when I'd update, but about 13cm of new snow at base level on April 8 deserves a mention. And we need to keep our total snowfall for the entire season accurate, right? SnowJapan's forecast got it right, but it was still weird to watch things get colder through the day, and the rain turn to snow. Pretty strong north winds are still blowing; a few minutes ago the wind really came in with some more new fall (thought it was just the snow in the trees and on the car blowing away, but it was in fact new flakes coming in horizontally. So we have the schizophrenic situation of sunny skies to the south (melting the snow off the roof) and gray skies, snow and wind from the north. Winter wants to fight its way back in; spring is holding firm in the south. But that wind might cause lift closures (meaning the gondola at Akakan, which would close the hill), some at Arai. We're now officially down to three operating areas, now with some fresh snow on top to make things pretty again. The snowpack was looking pretty grim there after the last rain (amazing what come up to the surface) so it's another nice day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's sunny, cold, beautiful... Happy New Year! And what a great way to start the new season. We have an excellent base of snow, the trees are just plastered in white, the mountains have finally popped into view. And looks like more snow ahead, maybe even heavy. Just one little warning: the lifts are freshly greased, and with melt and snow and stuff it will drip on your clothes. As it did for me yesterday, so I have a well spotted orange coat.... not blaming the ski areas, mind you - just maybe not wear your new best stuff just yet. We got a little less than 60cm since yesterday, which is less than expected, in a way, since it snowed all day long. And, even after a plowing at the end of the day, thre was a LOT of snow on the ground this morning. Tomorrow might be sunny, but the snow should continue for most of the week. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 45cm Snowfall at base this season 373cm Posted on Saturday 29th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow keeps falling today; as I type the report it's almost gloomy (but when the fog is actually snow, there's nothing depressing about it!). Not as much as yesterday's 80cm, but 45cm more by 9am this morning and it's adding at least a couple of centimeters per hour. Like I said, typical Myoko.... Heard of a couple of lifts closing during the day yesterday for "too much snow" - probably just the usual early-season hiccups. I give the resort a little slack on this, because those lifts are complicated big machines, but operate pretty much flawlessly (and safely). Gotta get out skiing! Things are looking really good (and being away from the house means concerns for those there who might not be able to get out... your reporter being the main snowthrower operator). Got some good info, though, so I'll share it with you. I'm being a little conservative on the snowfall; I'll confirm later with the snow boards and my ruler. Akakan did in fact open today, with four lifts operating (no snow or temperature report, but that's OK for the first day). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 128cm Posted on Friday 14th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back in Myoko, just in time for the first major dump of the year! And it looks like a good one, with about 50cm so far and plenty coming down. It was really windy, too, so there's some accumulation in places (like in front of my house) where it gets a little harder to tell. Will stick the ruler in the official spot later, and give a total tomorrow. The wind keeps blowing now too. Akakan had originally had the 15th listed as their opening day (I promise!); apparently today was the day, but they're postponing due to low snow - which looks likely to be corrected today.
