The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, here we come into, not the last weekend, but kinda. Suginohara is closing tomorrow; not entirely sure about Kurohime but with 20cm of cover (and thanks for their honesty in reporting) I'd say the end is near. A few others aren't clear, either, but we'll report the news we get. It's an OK day, clear but hazy. Better than rain (oh, yeah, which we did get yesterday, didn't we? Tried to forget). I'll sum up the season maybe tomorrow, maybe the 31st, when things will be really coming down to just a few remaining resorts, and not sure how much they'll be operating. Akakura Kanko: 200cm, 1° Myokokogen Sky Cable IS running; Champion No. 1 and No. 3 closed for the season. Will report on spring when a decision is made. Might as well enjoy today, because tomorrow looks to be very rainy and very windy. Crazy as usual for this season, with the freezing level (0°C line) going over 3,000 meters today and into tomorrow, then dropping down to under 1,000. And back up. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It did snow, starting from the afternoon, but it was little tiny flakes that didn't amount to much. Collective sigh, please. So it's dust on crust, as it is coldish still, enough to make the snow surface hard and not enough fresh snow to make it soft. That freezing level (the line where it's 0°C) is heading up the mountain during the coming days, so spring is returning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As we kind of expected, the nasty, raining morning yesterday turned to snow at the end of the day. The wind that closed both Suginohara and Seki Onsen continued, so this morning the car was literally plastered with snow and had a cornice forming off the roof. Drifts all over the place, too. It's still snowing lightly at the moment, but the forecast is for a sunny day later. So come out and enjoy the nice new snow, maybe with a nice blue sky overhead. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some lovely light flakes of snow have been falling thorough the morning, real little stars with lots of space between them, meaning fluffy, powder conditions. Not a whole lot of total snowfall, and the snow is tapering off a bit right now, but at least things are nice and white again. Could be some pretty good skiing out there, too. And it's staying cold, which is good for that snow condition. Warmer weather ahead in the new week.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We did get a little more snow through the day. While we started out with blue skies and calm winds, the barometer is falling, the sky is clouding up and the wind has really picked up a lot. Clouds of snow flying off the sugi trees, branches in motion. Makes you really feel alive. Still nice and empty out there on the slopes; some days it seems like there are more guys from the Self-Defense Forces out there on their skinny white skis and leather bindings (and those super-floppy leather boots! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow; pretty good wind, too. I doubt many people will be climbing offpiste with this much fresh snow, but it would be smart to (well, smart to not go in the first place) not go around valleys or other spots where a sluff could be really risky. It's pretty heavy snow, but feels like it could move on the right slope. Nothing like a little sluff becoming a big pile of snow with you in it at the base of a sharp valley. After that rain and gray in the morning, we felt a shift in the winds, it got colder (causing some really thick fog for a while), and then the snow started to come down. It's still falling nicely, so hopefully we'll have a few more centimeters on top of what we got from yesterday. Not a huge fall but pretty nice. Running a little late today; actually had a fun evening out locally at our neighborhood izakaya, where the clever owner built an amazing customizable set of acrylic walls to give us the viral protection we need (especially when things get loud, as often happens in this kind of setting). Can't say things are normal, but at least there are some safe places where you can still do sort of normal stuff here. Well, the ski fields are always there and viral-killing cold, right? Beautiful day of light and shadows, with blue skies and drifting clouds. Very dramatic dark and light scenes, with sparkling snow below (and a little fresh overnight). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 781cm Posted on Saturday 14th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Man, it was warm yesterday; then, in the late afternoon, the fog rolled in as it got colder, and now snow is falling. Not a lot, and it's made up of little tiny crystals. It's enough, though, that the branches are starting to get white here at the base (could be more up high, if the usual trends hold). It's getting pretty thin out there for a lot of places. Still not sure on Seki Onsen; they're not reported in the city's official page, and they haven't updated their figures and they were closed for a few days. Call ahead, I guess! Kurohime is reporting, but it's wait and see there. Nice if we got one more dump of 30+cm and everybody could open at least one more time. There's really only two weeks left on the official calendar for most resorts, but hate to see closings now. - Myoko Now: Friday 6th March 2020
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 775cm Posted on Friday 6th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I was hoping the snowplows would wake me up way early this morning (and I thought that, with the low snow this season, the plow drivers would be ready to go no matter how low the snowfall). But, apparently, there are minimums to be observed, and 13cm was not enough to send the diesel beasts out to scrape the asphalt. It may not be much, but it is beautiful snow. Had to pull the loupe out for a close look, and today we have absolutely perfect snowflakes. Christmas-card quality, tiny six-armed stars (and some not so tiny). Too bad there wasn't about 60cm of this; it would be perfect fluffy powder snow. But we're thankful for whatever we can get this season, and it feels like any snowfall could be the last. So I'm out now to test the performance of those flakes....
