The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We're still in the middle of this mid-winter storm with snowy, cold and somewhat windy conditions continuing. I have measured another 18cm of snowfall since yesterday and as you can see below there's some varied numbers being reported by the resort since yesterday morning. Local forecasts show no snow falling tomorrow so I expect a flood of folk coming on over to enjoy all of the fresh snow we have got this week. Excite times! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It is a cold morning again but it feels like we are now past the peak of that storm we have had. There's some more snow from yesterday and overnight. The fresh snowfall numbers below are from 3pm yesterday and overnight - sorry, I missed the numbers the resort was publishing during the day yesterday... so the totals will be more. My own observation is 12cm of fresh snowfall here at base. All should be open this morning and if things clear up like they seem likely to, we should be in for an all round fantastic day. I'm off out to enjoy it. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a break in the snow falling yesterday and some sunshine breaking through, this morning the snow is back and a thin layer on the ground - and the resort reporting between 1cm and 7cm of fresh snow, base to top. Actually as I write this report and look outside my window it isn't snowing, but it's due on and off during the day today and looks like it is snowing on the upper areas of the resort. The snow clouds should be remaining over the region today and tomorrow with the chance of some sun shining down on us around Wednesday. From today - until 1st April - the resort will be opening during the daytime until 5pm, rather than 4:30pm. Interesting that for the first time yesterday I did actually notice how it was keeping lighter for longer. Are we already somewhere near 'mid-season'?! The days whizz by too quickly. But I feel better when I remember that Nozawa Onsen will be open until early May. And then I remember that I have lots and lots of daily reports still to write! Have a good one. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There has been no fresh snowfall overnight, but yesterday some more falling across the mountain with the resort itself reporting up to 6cm. It remained mostly cloudy but we enjoyed a bit of sunshine and blue sky in the afternoon as well. This morning is mostly cloudy and that is what is on the latest forecast for today. It is a fairly chilly start to the day but as the day progresses today things are going to warm up, perhaps rising to around 8C later tonight (!) I'm afraid rain really does look like it is going to happen overnight tonight; we can just hope it doesn't last too long and that we perhaps get back to snow in the day tomorrow; it is actually supposed to not be as warm tomorrow. All fingers crossed! And the snow forecast around Wednesday looks promising. :) Today is the last day of the long weekend and a national holiday in Japan. It will be busier than a normal Monday but should start getting quieter in the afternoon. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from... Tokyo. Sorry, I'm not in Nozawa this morning so going off reports from a friend and a bit of help from the webcams. And happily, it's an easy morning to report with the sun out and lovely blue skies. It's going to be a fine day and also warming up into the low 20s as well. Sounds like a feel-good morning. There seems to be a bit of rain on the forecast for tomorrow morning but after that things look like they'll be settled for the main chunk of Golden Week coming up. Nozawa Onsen will be open until Sunday 7th May. 8 days to go! Lower slopes are now mostly bare but upper slopes still have an official snow depth of over 2m and excellent snow cover. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa Onsen on this last day of the 2016-2017 season. After the less appealing weather we had yesterday, the season is today set to end with fine and sunny conditions. Lift operations are as they have been the last few days, with the Nagasaka Gondola due to end the day at 3:40pm. Just for the record, on this last day of the season the resort is reporting these official snow depths: - Yamabiko: 160cm - Uenotaira: 65cm - Base areas: 0cm After the relatively poor season last time round, we enjoyed much more snowfall this season in this region of Nagano Prefecture. Take a look at the observed snowfall numbers reported on my Nozawa Now reports over the last five seasons: 2016-2017 season total observed snowfall at base: 822cm 2015-2016 season total observed snowfall at base: 472cm 2014-2015 season total observed snowfall at base: 1044cm 2013-2014 season total observed snowfall at base: 720cm 2012-2013 season total observed snowfall at base: 824cm This last season more snow fell in each month from December to March than in the same months last season – and in the case of January, quite a lot more. If you go over to the ‘Snowfall Analysis’ page of this report you can have fun taking a close look at the numbers and compare recent seasons. It’s the big blue tab at the top of this page if you didn’t already know. The observed snowfall numbers on my reports are of course what I observed falling at base, and there is considerably more snow falling on the upper slopes of the resort. Remember, you can see the snowfall that the resort itself is reporting from the upper slopes on each of our daily reports. So, all-in-all some very respectable numbers this season. It makes for good reading and something of a relief after 15-16. We always wanted those relatively poor numbers of last season to be a ‘one-off’! There was a bit of a worry at the beginning of the season – things took a while to get going – and there were a few periods of warmer conditions in mid-winter, so not everyone was lucky with timing. But most of the people I met seemed to be leaving Nozawa with very fond memories of the skiing, boarding and village in general. That’s always good to hear. Once again, the increase in the number of foreigners visiting Nozawa Onsen has been noticeable this past season. Lots of people around from lots of different countries and lots of languages to be heard. Don’t worry, there’s still lots of Japanese to be heard too even with this increasingly international crowd. Anyway, that’s it from me and the Nozawa Now reports for this season. Remember, Nozawa Onsen is a very fine place to be throughout through the year so perhaps some of you will be visiting before next winter season. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning folks. And what a great morning it is too. Some people may well accuse me of not being excited enough the other week in between all that rain and lower slopes that were barely covered in snow. Well, folks, I save my genuine excitement for times like this. When it's dumping with huge amount of snow across the mountain. This... is Nozawa! The resort itself is reporting 50+cm of fresh snowfall top to bottom this morning (since yesterday morning) and I can confirm as much at base. And the snow is still falling and likely to continue (heavily at times) until at least Monday and probably a bit beyond. Whiteout conditions for the most part so not for everyone this morning. No doubt there are a lot of very excited people itching to get up there this morning. Try to keep it under control, everyone wants to see everyone come back down at the end of the day. Have fun. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from a snowy Nozawa. As it should be! And a very decent amount of fresh snow across mountain as well this morning. Since yesterday there's been 35+cm on the upper Yamabiko area and 25-30cm down by base. And there's more on the way. We can expect heavy snow over the next three days. Brilliant. If you want to wait for the snow storm to pass, Monday or Tuesday might be the days for you. If you just can't wait to ride that fresh snow, try to contain the excitement and keep a calm head. I know it's difficult. I'm going to try and do that myself this morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Lovely day yesterday. The sun was out and blue skies. Conditions at Yamabiko were very nice. Good news this morning from Nozawa as our big week (hopefully) continues as we approach the highlight which should be this weekend. This morning there's an impressive chunk of snow up top - 45cm being reported by the resort from the top Yamabiko area! - and 25cm being reported across the mountain. My measurement this morning was 23cm. So there's a very nice new cover across the resort and we're expecting more... a lot more... between now and Monday. The heaviest snow is still forecast for Friday night and through the weekend. Very excited about this. Let's see how much I have to report tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I'm going to wrap up well and head up to that snow... some more courses open now (check the data below). It's another of those days when we have a fair amount of fresh snow up top (25cm on the top slopes) but hardly anything down below. Snow high, rain low. While that is far from ideal, there should be some very nice conditions on the higher slopes this morning. And while it's cloudy early, it looks like it could be clearing up for the daytime. Watch out for probably mild conditions during the day today, tomorrow should be colder. The forecast is still looking excellent for the coming week. Lighter snow perhaps tomorrow and Thursday with the "main event" (sustained heavy snowfall, hopefully) due from Friday and through the weekend. Don't let us down, nature! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from here in Nozawa. It is a cold start to the day and a cloudy start as well. Lots of clouds hanging on but the forecasts tell us to expect clearer skies (to some extent) by the end of the day today - though it should remain cold. Snow continued to fall during the day and into the evening yesterday and since the morning report the resort is reporting 23cm of snowfall on the top Yamabiko area, so conditions should be very good up there. Less accumulating on lower levels, so I would say Uenotaira and Yamabiko are the places to head to. Tomorrow sunshine is forecast and it will likely warm up a slightly, venturing into low positive numbers in the afternoon. After that, the next snowfall is still due around Monday and we need to be prepared for the chance of some rain on that day before the snow arrives; though it will probably be straight to snow higher up on the mountain. It's looking quite promising though is Monday night and Tuesday so that will be something to look forward to. Monday 9th January is a national holiday in Japan and for the long weekend (Saturday through Monday) the lifts will be opening 30 minutes earlier than usual - base lifts at 8am and gondolas from 8:10am. Lifts that are planned to be operating: All lifts appear to be operating except for: - Challenge pair - Utopia pair - Kandahar pair Most courses at Nozawa Onsen are now open.
