Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 508cm Posted on Thursday 14th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning (just!) Hakuba-loving friends. Anyone have fun the last few days? I think a fair few people say a big yes to that! Just a little more fresh snow being reported from across the mountains since yesterday. We had a fine start with some cloud and a lot of blue sky. It has been gradually clouding over since then and while it is not (or hardly) snowing around base areas just now, there is snow falling at higher elevations. Weather (specifically wind) is being blamed for the stopped top (and a few more) lifts at Happo-one this morning. Other ski areas seem to be open as normal. Tomorrow might be more clearly clear and sunny. (Kind of thought we were expecting that today, but...) --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 3cm Official snow depth: Upper: 310cm Toomi: 155cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 3cm Base: 3cm Official snow depth: Top: 305cm Base: 130cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: ?cm Official snow depth: Top: 295cm Base: 190cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 0cm Usagidaira: 0cm Top of Riesen quad: 15cm (social media) Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 310cm Usagidaira: 232cm Nakiyama: 85cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 0cm Village Side: 0cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 200cm Village Side: 100cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 290cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 0cm Official snow depth: 100cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 110cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 277cm Lower: 70cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 105cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated manually every report from public Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 1009cm Hakuba 47: 725cm Hakuba Happo-one: 815cm Hakuba Cortina: 869cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 840cm Note: There is usually a one day delay in numbers being updated Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Thursday 14th March 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 508cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 56 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 187cm reported on 16 days February 2024 snowfall 72cm reported on 13 days March 2024 snowfall 128cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 549cm Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We have more impressive snowfall since yesterday. Check the numbers below. 20cm, 30cm, 40cm... Cortina reporting over 70cm since Tuesday. And it's 21st March! I won't use lots of words. Rather, I just suggest you take a look here for historical monthly snowfall data. Of course, there's always much more to a season than just the raw snowfall numbers (hence the daily commentary), but the numbers clearly show that in my 12 years of reporting, I have never reported anywhere near as much snow in March as I have been able to this year. And there's no hyperbole there. We are definitely enjoying an excellent later part of the season. All this snow will be a big help to the 4 ski areas hoping to remain open until 6th May. That was looking rather unlikely a month ago. It really does feel like February was March, and March is February... From tomorrow we will probably start to get some warmer conditions, but importantly not alarmingly so. And is that more snow lined up on forecasts for mid-week next week?! --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 40cm Official snow depth: Upper: 300cm Toomi: 155cm Planned closing date: Monday 6th May Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 30cm Base: 20cm Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 145cm Planned closing date: Monday 6th May Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Lower: Over 70cm since 19th March Official snow depth: Top: 229cm Base: ?cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: ?cm Usagidaira: 12cm Top of Riesen quad: 30cm (social media) Nakiyama: ?cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 305cm Usagidaira: 223cm Nakiyama: 45cm Planned closing date: Monday 6th May Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 30cm Village Side: 25cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 200cm Village Side: 100cm Planned closing date: Sunday 24th March Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 265cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March Jigatake Now closed Kashimayari Official snow depth: 110cm Planned closing date: Sunday 24th March Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall: 40cm Official snow depth: Upper: 307cm Lower: 40cm Planned closing date: Monday 6th May White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 120cm Planned closing date: Sunday 24th March Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Thursday 21st March 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 549cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 58 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 187cm reported on 16 days February 2024 snowfall 72cm reported on 13 days March 2024 snowfall 169cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. It's almost as if the weather is waiting to do something and hasn't quite made up its mind yet. Hopefully, it will choose 'more snow' and I might have more of that to report tomorrow. Snow is expected over the weekend too. Possibly heavy snow. Great stuff. Love it! Ski areas not reporting much in terms of new snow this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Wow! What's going on!? I don't know, but I like it! We have tons of fresh snow across the valley this morning with Happo-one and Goryu both reporting up to 50cm of fresh snowfall, Tsugaike and 47 both reporting 40cm, and Cortina reporting 30-35cm. I can't remember expecting so much. JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) in central Hakuba is reporting 24cm as of 8am and I have just measured 29cm myself. And the forecasts still have more incoming showing. Really can't ask for much more than that. Visibility is limited this morning. Excitement is a given in such conditions, but super care needs to be taken too. For people with less experience in particular, it is probably a good day to stay the main runs at the ski areas. There's plenty of fresh snow to enjoy. Avalanche danger level at high. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Someone, obviously a newcomer clearly losing sleep over these things, asked about the snowfall numbers that are presented in this report. We haven't had this conversation for a while, so perhaps it's time for a reminder. I check official (Japanese) sources every morning. Basically, that means ski area official websites, and also their social media (yuck, the things I have to do). I just tell you what they are saying. You can see yourself if you go to official ski area websites. Sometimes the numbers seem odd, sometimes even conflicting. (Good example, I have questions about the numbers today). If they seem really odd, I might add a comment. But I still report what they say. The 'observed snowfall at base (24 hrs)' snowfall number in each report is the amount of snowfall I have observed at base since the last report. It's kind of in the name. (That snow can have arrived during the day before and disappeared by the next morning, etc). All of the Now reports on this site come to you from base areas. Hakuba is not treated differently. I do not live on the top of a mountain to report to you from there every morning. (Which mountain? There's a few). And I always try to mention any other mountain-side snowfall numbers that are being reported by ski areas when they are available in an effort to provide as much info as possible. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 0cm Official snow depth: Upper: 210cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 0cm Base: 0cm Official snow depth: Top: 215cm Base: 85cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: ?cm Official snow depth: Top: 175cm Base: 115cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 0cm Usagidaira: 0cm Top of Riesen quad: 5cm (social media) Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 205cm Usagidaira: 151cm Nakiyama: 45cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 10cm Village Side: 10cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 145cm Village Side: 90cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 175cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 0cm Official snow depth: 60cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 100cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 204cm Lower: 62cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 65cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated manually every report from public Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 807cm Hakuba 47: 555cm Hakuba Happo-one: 650cm Hakuba Cortina: 614cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 617cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Wednesday 28th February 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 380cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 187cm reported on 16 days February 2024 snowfall 72cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 375cm Posted on Tuesday 27th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's fresh snow on the ground this morning with ski areas reporting up to 15cm of fresh on the slopes. That is a nice refresh for everyone heading up onto the mountains to enjoy this morning. We should be getting some more snow during the day today. It is quite windy out there too and snow is being blown around, giving us some limited to poor visibility. Quite cold too. There's some sun expected tomorrow and then more snow forecast for late week so we could well start March really well. Top lifts at Happo-one affected by the wind and the Tree Riding Zone at 47 is closed today - I hear there was some broken/fallen branches causing issues yesterday (and they also mention 'poor conditions', I'm guessing that is wind-related rather than snow-related). --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 10cm Official snow depth: Upper: 210cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 5cm (though they say 10cm on social media) Base: 5cm Official snow depth: Top: 215cm Base: 85cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: 15cm Official snow depth: Top: 175cm Base: 115cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 10cm Usagidaira: 0cm (?) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 371cm Posted on Monday 26th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I have to be early and quick this morning so not all info is in yet, but ski areas are reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow on the mountains. While it hasn't really been sticking on roads, we do have had a bit down at base too (and you can see it on the trees - compare the Hakuba Goryu tree image from today with the image from yesterday). Hopefully we will get more snow through tomorrow. (I say this as a bit of sun breaks through the cloud and brightens my room)... --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 5cm Official snow depth: Upper: 205cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 5cm Base: 5cm Official snow depth: Top: 210cm Base: 80cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: 10cm Official snow depth: Top: 155cm Base: 105cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: ?cm Usagidaira: 10cm Top of Riesen quad: 3cm (social media) Nakiyama: ?cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 205cm Usagidaira: 154cm Nakiyama: 30cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 5cm Village Side: 2cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 120cm Village Side: 90cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 150cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 5cm Official snow depth: 60cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 90cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 183cm Lower: 55cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 65cm --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below originates from the ski areas themselves, it is being checked and updated manually every report from public Hakuba Valley sources] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 792cm Hakuba 47: 545cm Hakuba Happo-one: 650cm Hakuba Cortina: 589cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 617cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Monday 26th February 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 371cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 44 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 187cm reported on 16 days February 2024 snowfall 63cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 369cm Posted on Saturday 24th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Some snow out on the slopes to find yesterday. (Hakuba 47 was reporting 5cm, though not reporting any further this morning). Just a dusting up to a few more cm this morning. Lots of cloud around this morning but we will probably get clearer skies and sun as the day progresses. And hopefully snow sometime tomorrow/Monday. Last night skiing of the season at Hakuba Cortina and Jigatake tonight. Line E lift back up and operating this morning. - Hakuba Now: Friday 23rd February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 368cm Posted on Friday 23rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's some fresh snow to report this morning, mostly ranging from a dusting through 3cm... but Jigatake is reporting 10cm. It is still snowing lightly, though it is not the kind of snow that brings us big numbers. Limited visibility on the mountains this morning, the first day of the long weekend. With today being a national holiday in Japan, it's will probably be a busy one. We might get to enjoy some sun tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will remain cold over the coming days and then we get more snow early in the week. --------------- Unfortunately the top Line E lift at Hakuba 47 is out of action today and that effectively cuts off the connection between 47 and Goryu. (Not sure why, but it's due to be closed for the day). --------------- I hear that, through end of January 2024, there were about 290,000 overseas visitors to the 10 ski areas that make up 'Hakuba Valley'. That is 2.2 times the number of visitors from last season and a record number for the season is expected. There certainly are a lot of people from around the world here this year. It will surely only increase. I'm always curious as to how they come up with these numbers... I know I don't identify myself when I go skiing, and am not easily identifiable as a foreigner in ski gear (especially on a cold day). And I live here. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 3cm Official snow depth: Upper: 210cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall (overnight): Upper: 3cm Base: 3cm Official snow depth: Top: 200cm Base: 75cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: Upper: ?cm Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 89cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 0cm Usagidaira: 1cm Top of Riesen quad: 2cm (social media) Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 210cm Usagidaira: 137cm Nakiyama: 35cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: ?cm Village Side: ?cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 130cm Village Side: 90cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 160cm Jigatake Reported snowfall: 10cm Official snow depth: 60cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: 90cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth: Upper: 174cm Lower: 50cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 60cm Hakuba Now 2023-2024 season Data as Friday 23rd February 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 368cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 35cm (8th January) November 2023 snowfall 28cm reported on 4 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 13 days January 2024 snowfall 187cm reported on 16 days February 2024 snowfall 60cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba.
