The snow didn't make it's way down to this region yesterday and this morning we have another clear and bright morning... more blue skies and the sun shining down and a temperature of 2C now in town, with a high of around 6C forecast this afternoon. It should be dropping quick though as evening approaches and - fingers crossed - that snow we have been waiting for - and tomorrow does certainly look set to be a colder day with snow falling. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. There's some cloud up there in places but lots of blue sky as well and the sun is shining through and casting shadows this morning - it's a fine, calm start to the day and currently around 0C. I was hoping to be reporting snow but we haven't had any snowfall since yesterday. When will the snow arrive? Perhaps some later on, as it is actually snowing more northerly parts of Niigata this morning. Decent snowfall looks most likely though later tomorrow and going into Thursday. Hopefully that forecast will turn out to be correct. If you take a look back at the archives for January 2012 you'll see how the official snow depth numbers of resorts around town are in some cases considerably less this year... not so much higher areas. Fingers crossed that January will bring with it those crazy snowstorms that deposit huge amounts of snow over a few days. There's not a shortage problem, but we always want regular topups. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday did indeed end up being a wet day out there. Rain. Even higher up on the mountains it seems and you can see how the snow depth numbers have for the most part taken a dip today... the rain without doubt didn't do the slopes any favours. This morning we had a dusting of new snow and up to 5cm higher up. Definitely colder this morning but hovering around 0C so still relatively mild for the time of year. It is generally cloudy around town at the moment and seems to be wanting to try to snow lower down and snow falling on the mountains now - fairly poor visibility higher up too at the moment. The snow clouds should be with us until the end of the week. We have had a few decent snowfalls this season so far but not a consistent long lasting storm really, leaving us with less snow than this time last year. Hopefully early January will bring us one of those famous Niigata storms. Will be back tomorrow with the first report of 2013. Have a good one. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It ended up being a fine morning yesterday and most of the afternoon as well, just some wispy clouds forming over time. But generally a fine and mild kind of day. It was mild overnight and this morning it's almost warm here in Yuzawa. Right now it is 7C. Rain is still very possible, likely even, but for now it's just cloudy. There is a moderate wind this morning and the GALA Yuzawa resort is closed for the day because of that, and Yuzawa Kogen opened later than planned, but other resorts in the region seem unaffected and open as normal. Tomorrow should be colder - and snowier. The fresh layer of snow would be very welcome after these last few days of warmer temperatures and lack of fresh supply. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Just a sprinkling of new snow in town this morning with higher elevations reporting up to 10cm or so. The day started off cloudy and while there are still lots of cloud up there, there's more blue sky opening up and the sun casting shadows in places. The forecast has the sun doing it's job today and conditions clearing up with a high of around +5C later on. Tomorrow is going to be milder still and that chance of rain in the afternoon, hopefully quickly turning into snow later. From Monday it's cloud/snow every day late into the week so we can hope for some decent topups each day. The resorts around town were busier yesterday but it wasn't too bad. As more people arrive this weekend to enjoy their last ski of the year and people staying for New Year, it's going to get busier at the popular resorts. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Some great conditions out there yesterday along with sunny blue skies as well. It kept cold out on the mountains as well, which was good. Very fine day. This morning it is a cloudy start and a temperature of around 0C now, possibly rising to around 5C. We might see a sprinkling of snow tonight but generally are due for a few days of relatively mild conditions before the snow returns late in the weekend and into early week. Rain still possible Sunday before it turns into snow. The slopes were still not busy yesterday but with the New Year holiday period fast approaching we can expect things to start getting busier especially from the weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Noisy strong winds blowing about this morning in the region. Most importantly we have another layer of fresh snow to enjoy with the most being reported by Kagura - up to 30cm. More like 15-20cm in town, and the snow is continuing to fall. Very wintery cold temperatures as well, right now it is -5C and it doesn't seem to want to warm up any either. The Tashiro area of Kagura is closed with limited operations at both the remaining Mitsumata area and also over at Naeba. Here nearer central Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen has been closed early on but they hope to get moving if winds allow. Other than that resorts do seem to be open though you might expect some lifts to be operating at reduced speed. If you go out and brave the weather, should be really good snow out there. If you prefer calmer conditions perhaps tomorrow or Friday is the best option. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It was cold overnight and some icy conditions on the road this morning. The sun has been out though and the day started off with some nice blue skies over Yuzawa. The sun is still shining down on us though there seems to be more cloud gathering to the north and the forecast does tell us to expect snow clouds to move in and snow to be falling later on. Right now it is -2C in town. Snow tonight and tomorrow, followed by a few days of clearer conditions into the weekend. Looks like it might warm up again around Sunday, but that's a while off. It started snowing yesterday later in the day and this morning the results of that are about 20cm around town and up to an impressive 50cm at Kagura. It's about -2C in the town and not much of a wind at the moment, though stronger winds are forecast for later in the day. The same forecast has us down for snow all day, so lots and lots of it please, then clearing up for tomorrow morning and back tomorrow night. Conditions will have improved considerably this morning. Yesterday ended up being wetter than hoped with rain falling on and off, lighter and heavier in places around town, for most of the day and into the evening. Happily it got colder overnight and there's a sprinkling of snow this morning, not much around town at all but Kagura got up to 20cm on the upper slopes. I haven't been up there to test it but I'd imagine it was on the wet and heavy side, as the snow falling in town is definitely of that variety. We're still looking for decent snowfall tonight and tomorrow and the snow clouds should be around until around Wednesday, so all hoping for a snowy Christmas. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan and so we can expect weekend-like busy-ness on the slopes. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It has been a cloudy start to the day in Yuzawa with some rain falling earlier on but holding off as I write this report. It's a mild 5C at the moment and rain is forecast today still and so there is a good chance of that happening... indeed it is actually raining now in Minamiuonuma. It seems that we now have all ski resorts in Yuzawa at least part open, with just a few yet to open to the north in Minamiuonuma. As I mentioned last night resorts are trying to open up as much as possible. Kagura has been near-fully open for a while now, and from today most of Naeba will be open. Iwappara are running all their lifts this morning and all courses on their slopes open. Gala Yuzawa also opens today with all of the Central Area and part of both the North and South Areas open - all lifts are moving apart from the one pair lift in the North Area. Most of the skiers-only NASPA Ski Garden, which also opens for the first time today, is also open from the go. All in all, we're doing pretty good I'd say. It is always a relief for the ski resorts to be able to open before Christmas and with so much open as well... there have been years when it has been much more limited at this time of year. Everything is set. So let's bring on the crazy snowfall! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Sorry for the delay, I was planning on posting this earlier. It has been a generally bright day here in Yuzawa, no new snowfall since this morning and perhaps just a chance of a thin layer overnight tonight - up to 5cm higher on the mountains. It is a chilly evening, around 1 degrees at the moment and not quite icy on the roads. It probably won't dip below zero tonight and unfortunately it does look like it will rain tomorrow around town and in lower areas. Hopefully not too heavy, not too long, and hopefully it will be snow.... but things are going to keep quite mild for the weekend. We'll just have to see the cards that nature deals come tomorrow. Higher up would certainly be the place to be to have the best chance of good conditions. Sunday is looking more promising and we have been talking about the chance of some decent snowfall. It still looks to be on, perhaps later in the day and into Monday when it should be colder. Tomorrow is the first day of the season for GALA Yuzawa, NASPA Ski Garden and Ipponsugi in Yuzawa as well as Muikamachi Hakkaisan and Chateua Shiozawa in neighbouring Minamiuonuma - leaving only a few skijo in the region yet to open. Resorts around town have been in 'part open' mode, though for this weekend and going into Christmas they will be trying to open up as much as possible. While cover is good, we're still fairly thin on the ground snow-wise, and so everyone is looking forward to that dump of fresh snow to let more open up.
