The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Pre-weekend update It hasn't been so warm here today even with the sun out. It has been windy though. Tomorrow will also be sunny but warmer and less windy. Should be a fine day actually, though skiable area is getting less now with lots of patches showing through down to Paraside now. Cover on Uenotaira and Yamabiko - while relatively thin - is still good and the resort are putting a lot of effort into trying to keep things going smoothly. There's still fun to be had out there. Some rain is expected around Sunday according to the forecasts. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Did you see Nozawa on the news yesterday? Nozawa as well as relatively close-by Myoko and Tsunan in Niigata Prefecture all made the national news with the silly amounts of snow that has been falling in the region. To add to that 1m that I was talking about yesterday, the resort reported 48cm of fresh snow at the top of the mountain during the day yesterday through until evening and this morning they are saying 50cm (from 3pm yesterday until 8am this morning). It's one of those times when if anything people are prepared to under-report, for fear of scaring people away! Sounds funny that doesn't it. A great situation to be in though and infinitely preferably to the opposite! The official snow depth for the upper Yamabiko area of the resort here in Nozawa has already smashed through the 2m mark. Just to compare for the fun of it - last year on 15th December 2013, the same number was on 100cm. It's all very exciting anyway and while we're still in the middle of the storm so to speak it's going to be an absolutely fantastic start to the season. Funny how we were talking about the resort delaying opening due to lack of snow... how long ago was that? ;) While it's snowing still now, it is expected to stop maybe later this morning. That won't last for long though with it forecast to start snowing again later on in the day tomorrow with heavy snow to fall overnight into Wednesday and Thursday. Come Friday and Saturday, we might get to see the sun and some clearer skies. Guessing but would surely expect Nozawa Onsen to be near fully open by the end of the week and the weekend. I will of course post any information as we get it on here. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Some great big whopping ridiculously large numbers to report this morning. The resort yesterday was noting 10cm of snowfall during the day on the upper slopes when I checked last night. Hmmm, ok, but where's the heavy snow we wanted. Well, this morning, it's here! For the period 3pm yesterday until 8am this morning, this is how much fresh snow they are reporting: Yamabiko - 95cm (!) Uenotaira - 90cm Nagasaka - 80cm That's new snowfall, not the snow depth. That new snow has all of a sudden brough up the snow depth on the top Yamabiko runs up to 165cm. In previous reports I have mentioned how quickly things can change and today is a great example. All of a sudden, 1m of fresh snow. Lifts and courses that are open seem to be the same as yesterday and while it's a decent area, it will be great to see the whole resort be able to open and I'm sure that will be fairly soon with all this snow. Forecast: snow through today and getting weaker by tomorrow morning. Then more heavy snow late Tuesday and Wednesday. We might get some sun on Friday. Lots more snow to get before then though. It's all great to get very excited about the deep powder snow conditions, but care is most definitely needed. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The resort reporting 10cm of snow since yesterday and there's a nice fresh snow look to the trees this morning, helped along by the sun shining down on them. Still some cloud hanging around from yesterday and overnight, but it seems to be clearing and we are in for a day of fine and sunny conditions. Milder temperatures as well today and tomorrow though rain clouds will be moving in tomorrow in the village. Hopefully snow on the upper slopes. Later Friday into Saturday is still looking very promising with heavy snow in particular forecast for Saturday along with very cold conditions. Fancy doing some cross country? Nozawa is opening it's Uenotaira cross country course from Saturday... apparently about 5km of it. Tickets are 1250 yen for adults and 800 yen for children for the Gondola and course maintenance. No news on other course areas of the resort opening yet, but I would expect more open at the weekend. That's just a guess though, will bring any real news to this report in the coming days. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is open! Hurray! 2014-2015 Season In! Etc! Here we are once again at the beginning of another season, one hopefully full of huge amounts of regular snow (30cm overnight, every night please) and stories that will be told for ages to come. Fittingly, we have large amounts of snow to enjoy right from the word go. The resort is reporting 65cm of fresh snow on the Yamabiko top area of the resort and 75cm Uenotaira. That's since 3pm yesterday afternoon! There's been a lot down here in the village too. Great start. Can you tell I'm excited? Let me calm down. OK so yes, Nozawa has opened up this morning and the first runs of the season are currently being had as I sit here writing this. What's open? Basically, the top Yamabiko area of the resort. Courses: Yamabiko A Yamabiko B Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Kokenashi Lifts: Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Four Lift Yamabiko Number 2 Four Lift Anyway, I'm off to go get re-acquainted with above said lifts and courses. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More of Nozawa is open from this morning including the self-named 'Best beginners course in the world!' that is Uenotaira. A bold claim for sure, but it certainly a fine place for beginners. Looks like some more courses are going to be open this morning according the official website (as noted below), but they haven't given specific mention to them in their news yesterday. Just 5cm or so of snow across the mountain overnight but it is snowing and hopefully the start of this heavy snowfall we were promised. We expect! It has been a while since my last report from Hakuba and it has got quite a lot colder since then and the odd bit of snow dusting the tops of the mountains as well. This morning it is a chilly 8 degrees here in the village early on and a thick blanket of cloud low down covering the village... from where I am now I can't see much other than this cloud. But go just a bit higher up the mountain side and you break through the clouds and it looks like we will be in for a fine day here in Hakuba. A high of around 14 degrees is forecast for later on in the day. What's more interesting is what is just around the corner. It does look like from tomorrow we will see a lot of rain here in the village but higher up temperatures will be in minus territory and we should see potentially a decent amount of snow fall up there. How much and how far down it will come, we'll just have to see but it does look likely to be the strongest hint of winter yet. Exciting stuff! Reports from now on will be more regular as we approach the season. Oh yes, resort opening dates. Here's the official word, all depending on how snow of course. The resorts that hope to open within November are usually good at opening as soon as they can when there's enough snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After a milder spell of weather, this morning I bring good news from Hakuba with another layer of snow on the ground. There's around 20cm or so fallen by the roads in the valley. It started snowing yesterday morning and by late morning the ski jump at Happo - which is where I happened to be - was all white. The snow eased up later in the day but Hakuba 47 was reporting 20cm of snow at the Gondola summit station and 30cm up at 1450m... they were calling it 'heavy' snow. This morning they are talking of 40cm down at base They are on standby to pretty much open as quickly as possible now. Hopefully very soon. Back to the weather. The snow seems to be easing off now and the local forecast is for cloudy conditions today. Not that much snow lined up on the weekly forecast into next week as it stands at the moment, but we know how easily that can change. UPDATED AT 4:45PM: Happo-one have announced that they will be opening (or 'pre-opening'!) tomorrow - the Gondola will be taking the first people up the mountain at 8:30am tomorrow morning with the Panorama pair lift and Kokusai Number 3 lifts also starting their season at 8:40am. Looks like it is special lift ticket price time - 2500 yen for adults and 1500 yen for children. Hakuba Goryu are also opening tomorrow with the top Panorama course open, serviced by the Gondola and the Alps No1 pair lift. The Gondola will open at 8:30am. They are reporting an impressive 1m of snow up top there. It's 2400 yen for adults and 1250 yen for children. Hakuba 47 plans to have Line E lift open on Saturday and Sunday. Looking like it will clear up tomorrow but hey, it's 'season in'! Tsugaike Kogen is currently planning to open from Saturday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's not a whole lot to report this morning - the third day of the season for Happo! A lovely day yesterday with fine blue skies for most of the day. It is a more cloudy start to the day today, but still bright and a few patches of blue sky showing through. Temps dipped into minus numbers overnight but today we are looking at a high of around 10 degrees in the village. So it's rather mild just now. Tomorrow - even warmer, with rain. The remaining bits of snow in the village may well get washed away with that. Not to fear. The prospects for some significant snowfall are looking rather good from Wednesday onwards. From Tuesday look for temps dipping and then a start to another cold blast and deposit of snow from later on in the day on Wednesday. Hopefully sooner, though possibly heavy rain up front before the snow is probably. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 25cm Posted on Friday 22nd November 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The lifts are moving, 2013-2014 is on! So this morning the Gondolas at Goryu and Happo-one kicked the season off in Hakuba at 8:30am, at least with what Happo are calling 'pre-open'. Sounds like open to me that - it's just the Panorama course at Happo and the actually the same named course over at Goryu. No new snowfall to report since yesterday in the village and there's a lot of cloud hanging around this morning but resorts reporting some snowfall on higher elevations. There seems to be a chance of some snowfall especially higher up today but we are looking at clearer weather for the weekend and a run of milder days going into next week. For the moment it is +3C in the village area now. From tomorrow some more of Happo should be open (more of the top area) as well as the first lifts moving over at Tsugaike Kogen. It will all depend on the weather and snow conditions of course, but from now on we can expect those resorts to try and open up as much as is possible. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We continue to wait on snow with limited operations continuing at Happo-one, 47, Goryu and Tsugaike Kogen. Actually, Hakuba 47 seem to be reporting 5cm of fresh up top this morning, though nothing lower down. Yesterday we had some very strong winds blowing about which interrupted lifts. But this morning it is much calmer. The calm before the storm hopefully, with decent snowfall forecast for tomorrow and Friday. I hope to be able to bring news of fresh snow and colder conditions soon.
