  • Niseko Now: Friday 6th March 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 683cm Posted on Friday 6th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Hirafu base. This morning we have light (to moderate just before, eased off again right now) snow and moderate wind, though less than yesterday. I am measuring 9cm of fresh snow down at base and I note that both Hirafu and Hanazono appear to be reporting 15cm on upper slopes. As of 8:30am the top lifts at Hanazono, Village and Annupuri are on hold but all other lifts are scheduled to be running as planned. That may well change of course. We are due a period of warm-up from Sunday through perhaps Tuesday; forecasts appear to show rain on Tuesday before a drop in temperatures again from around Wednesday... and hopefully some snowfall. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2℃, 10cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: N 4°2.2m/s, -5.6℃. Annupuri 1100m: NNW 334°4.8m/s. Yu no sawa: NE 46°4m/s, -7.9℃. Village 900m: N 6° 3.4m/s, -7.1℃. Hirafu 1000m: N 7°, 11m/s, -8℃. Hanazono 720m: N 1°7.3m/s, -5.9℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NE12m/s, Kamui cape: ESE3m/s, 1012hPa, 3.2m waves. The storm has passed and the weather is calming down. The wind’s peak was around 2am, blowing over 20m/s at 1000m and higher elevation. According to observations, testing and reports, the snowpack is starting to stabilize. Gates are scheduled to open, but will be delayed. Snowdrifts over 1m thickness have developed in leeward spots above 500m elevation. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes, leeward knolls and cornice slopes. 50+cm thick slides are likely to occur, better stay away from those aspects. Please be prudent and make conservative decisions. Ride one by one and do not stay put in gullies. Have you switched your beacon on? Ask the ski patrol some advice and don’t push it too far today. We strongly hope there are no accidents happening today. Have a nice one. ----- Niseko Grand Hirafu Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 320cm - Base: 125cm All lifts are normally operating EXCEPT: - Ace Number 1 pair lift (normally rested) - King Number 2 quad lift (normally rested) Lifts scheduled for late operations: - Ace Family quad until 8:30pm - Ace Number 2 Center Four quad until 8:20pm - Hirafu Gondola until 8:10pm - Holiday Number 1 pair until 8:30pm ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 230cm - Base: 140cm All lifts are normally operating ----- Niseko Annupuri Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 185cm - Base: 110cm All lifts are normally operating Lift scheduled for late operations: - Jumbo Number 1 quad until 8:30pm ----- Niseko Village Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 190cm - Base: 110cm All lifts normally operating EXCEPT: - Country Road Chair (normally rested) Lifts scheduled for late operations: - Annupuri Village Gondola until 8:00pm - Village Express until 8:00pm - Banzai Chair until 8:00pm Niseko Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Friday 6th March 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 683cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 74 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 33cm (21st January) November 2019 snowfall 85cm reported on 10 days December 2019 snowfall 207cm reported on 21 days January 2020 snowfall 224cm reported on 20 days February 2020 snowfall 143cm reported on 19 days March 2020 snowfall 24cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. • Naeba Now: Friday 6th March 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 358cm Posted on Friday 6th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Hello from Naeba. Fresh snowfall news this morning, hurray!! The resort is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall at base and 20cm higher up. Down here at base I can see 5-10cm. It's difficult to put a number on it with all the wind over the last day or so. But I think 7cm is probably reasonable. It may not be as windy as yesterday but still quite windy with the lifts noted below on hold at the start of the day. The snow is due to ease off and perhaps we will get clearer skies by this afternoon. Hopefully less wind and those lifts might get moving. Clearer skies are forecast tomorrow and temperatures gradually getting back to being mild again. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. Fresh snow! And actually, quite a decent amount of it too. It took its time to get geared up yesterday but once it did conditions got pretty wild. This morning Yakebitaiyama are reporting 30cm (and 60cm over the last two days), Kumanoyu are reporting 20cm and my enthusiastic friend (code name: bless him!) is saying 40cm. Whatever the number, take the lowest, there's a decent amount of fresh snow on the slopes this morning! :) It is still snowing (light to moderate depending on area) but perhaps easing off later this morning. Clearer weather is due tomorrow too so conditions should remain very good even if it is a bit milder. All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). Always great to see fresh snow on the ground and it kind of feels more special now with the season being as it is. The resort is reporting 15cm up top since yesterday afternoon. Some warm temperatures lined up for Monday and Tuesday next week. (15C?! Yikes). It remains to be seen if this is the last snowfall of the season. Note: I'm saying that in part as a cheeky dare to Nature.... ;) I hold out the hope for more, particularly at higher elevations. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto. And it is. (A good one). A windy day yesterday, the wind affecting the operation of the Number 1 gondola early afternoon. The resort is reporting 33cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday morning with 20cm of that overnight. That sounds about right. It kind of feels like winter again! Regarding the tree runs. I have spoken with someone at the resort and they make the final decision about that around 8:30am. So my report is usually too early to cover that. If you are here, you should check with them at the start of your day. It looks like all but the Extreme tree run course should be open today. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning. OK so fresh snow to report. The resort is reporting 10cm and I can add 9cm as my personal measurement. It would have been good to get more but it is better than none. And it should be fun out there this morning; things are very quiet now (thanks to what's on the news headlines...) We are expecting gradually warmer temperatures starting tomorrow and peaking around Tuesday when temps might get into (low) double digits. It does look like it will get somewhat colder again beyond that from Wednesday - perhaps we can hold out for a bit more 'winter' then? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. I can add a bit more snow since yesterday morning and there are varying numbers being reported by the ski resorts. The biggest number this morning being reported is by the folks over at Tsugaike Kogen who say 25cm. Sounds good, that. Some very strong gusty windy conditions affected quite a few lifts during the day yesterday but operations seem more normal this morning. With access to the mountains this morning and the fresh snow conditions it should be good. It is a cold morning. There is a lot of cloud around still - and seemingly limited visibility in some upper areas - but some blue sky too and a good chance that things will clear up. After the cold morning today it does look like we can expect a return to milder conditions tomorrow with a day or two of real warmth mid week. Let's deal with that later. • Zao Now: Thursday 5th March 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 271cm Posted on Thursday 5th March 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. A thin dusting of snow around my place this morning and (very) light snow currently falling at the moment - it looks like higher up there should be more but there's no change in the official snow depth numbers put out by the resort this morning. Wind might well be an issue for some lifts today but at the start of the day it seems things are opening as planned. And I hope to bring more news of snow in the report tomorrow...
