I almost thought things were tapering off last night, and that maybe the storm moved ahead a day, as most had predicted Tuesday (today) as the day for heavy snow. But it got a little quieter last night, I got out with the big machines and got the snow into order. And then I woke up. Been out plowing this morning, readers, and there's a lot of snow out there and it keep on coming down. Sorry I didn't take a photo as I poked the ruler into the snowpack (I'm officially in quarantine until the end of the day, as I had to make a fast year-end overseas trip, so the phone is in my officially quarantine location, with the app ready to check on me four or five times a day. I have been good, I swear!). But trust me, the figure is legitimate, genuine, scientifically acquired. I actually found much deeper spots as I probed around a bit, but our designated, fairly drifting-free measuring spot did tell me that 71cm fell overnight. Yow. Great conditions; too much for off-piste today, but we're building a great base for a long season, so enjoy powder on the "groomed" runs today! Please note that a few key lifts are NOT running (most notably at Akakan's Champion No. 3 Quad, which is the return link from Akakura Onsen, which will be closed until the 20th). Goryu is reporting 15cm of new snowfall on the top Alps area, 47 is reporting 5-10cm across the mountain, Happo is reporting 10-23cm, Cortina is reporting 10cm and Tsugaike wins the day with 26cm on upper areas. So there you go. If forecasts become reality we might enjoy some heavy snow overnight tonight with continued snow through the day today and into tomorrow. Then some more on Thursday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The snow is back. Just a little so far with more due through tomorrow. It has started to come down nicely now and Naski has some snow already on his/her 'head' (?!), or top bit. Looks like today the following lifts will not be moving: Skyline, Challenge, Utopia pair, Nagasaka quad, Karasawa pair. Not hearing the reason for some of those, but there's this too... A few members of staff at the ski area/related businesses have been confirmed as testing positive for covid in the last few days. The ski area is being upfront about this and reporting it clearly on their website. I noticed similar stories on the Yuzawa and Hakuba reports recently, and also the Niseko report just posted this morning. This new wave is starting to become 'an issue' again. Currently there are no restrictions at all, with everyone relying on everyone being good and doing their best to prevent infections. We can only hope it stays that way. I'm glad I did a lot of general snow clearing yesterday, and added a few more protective boards to one of our windows (shielding the windows from the avalanches of snow off the roof), because the snow is back on again this morning. The weather reports all had snow today, heavy snow tomorrow, but it is coming down hard now. A little more than 20cm so far, and we could be getting 2cm or more an hour, I'd guess. You can really tell abandoned or unused buildings this year, because, with pretty steadily cold temperatures, the roofs haven't gotten warm enough to shed the snow, so the weight is really adding up. It's pretty interesting inside a house where the snow refuses to slide, because doors inside also often refuse to move, too (I'm so glad my house has a steep metal roof, so the snow slides off pretty quickly. Just need the boards on the windows to make sure snow doesn't get inside the house!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny and clear to start the day today; frosted windows and a cold night, but it's warming up quickly today. It's supposed to be about 4°C warmer today than yesterday, and that seems about right. Good day to finish getting parking lots and roofs and all those things that were covered in snow all cleaned up and ready for the next storm cycle. Which is coming soon. The clouds are starting to move in now from the oceanside; the morning forecast on TV said it could rain, but I think (hope?) it will be snow, if anything. Snow is supposed to fall tomorrow, turning back to a heavy fall on Tuesday. I have to add that it's a great time to ski here, for those who can. This is Sunday morning, and the road in front of my reporting spot should be packed with cars coming up the hill, but it's just not. The conditions are just perfect, really, with lots of snow and nice weather.... Could still be a little dicey offpiste; the top layer of snow is pretty slab-y, which I discovered just by snowblowing a place I hadn't been able to get to earlier (two meters of snow, with lots of layers in the snowpack). Choose your lines carefully if you're going into the backcountry; lower-angle slopes should be powdery and delightful, and a lot safer. Things have generally calmed down and while it is still snowing on upper areas of the mountain (as per ski area data), it's just cloudy down here at base. 52-60cm of snowfall reported on the top areas since yesterday and up to 30cm on lower areas. So lots more fresh snow. Lifts should be opening as planned this morning. We have passed the peak of this particular delivery and by tomorrow there should be some sun in the sky. Still some cloud but some blue sky too and the sun is breaking through. Similarly fine weather is forecast for tomorrow before some more snow clouds move in over the region on Monday. A good pattern that will hopefully continue for a long time! The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Big numbers this morning to start the weekend. How does almost 1m of snow on the mountain sound? And 83cm of it down at base. It was a day of wild conditions yesterday and that's what we are left with. Perhaps not great if you were here yesterday... much better if you are here this morning! The snow has eased off though it is still quite windy. All lifts should be moving (though chance wind might still be an issue) and snow conditions should be top drawer. The ski area itself is now reporting 1347cm of snowfall so far this season (!) Courses open: All normal courses open. Planned tree run courses: Depends on conditions.
