Maybe some clearer weather to get us going tomorrow morning, with snow due later on (night time?) and into Sunday. Not much wind forecast. Rested lifts today: Skyline connecting, Challenge pair, Utopia pair, Karasawa pair. Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (total since yesterday afternoon): - Yamabiko (1615m): 22cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 16cm - Hikage (660m): 10cm - Nagasaka (616m): 15cm - Karasawa (563m): 5cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 315cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 270cm - Hikage (660m): 250cm - Nagasaka (616m): 245cm - Karasawa (563m): 160cm All courses apart from the following plan to be open: - Yunomine A - Grand Prix Planned operating lifts: - Subject to weather conditions all lifts that plan to be open should be ok. It was blowing pretty hard in some areas earlier, but not to bad at the moment (so probably few worries about wind-stopped gondolas, etc.). It's probably going to keep going for several days, so we'll get a good cover on a snow surface that was a bit sun-crusted in places yesterday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's snowing again this morning. Not much up until now but hopefully we'll get some during the day today and hopefully over the next few days. It doesn't seem we're on for any heavy snowfall though. Early morning visibility is limited especially in higher areas. Nagano Prefecture joins the 'quasi state of emergency' club from today. It's a somewhat confusing thing, but it boils down to certain businesses (restaurants, bars) being asked to shorten their business hours. Apparently this is done to help contain the spread of the covid. Naski doesn't know much about it and most definitely is not a scientist vegetable, so has no comment. Just hopes people will still come. But it might dissuade some from visiting. Particularly, from what I have heard from friends with interest in businesses here in Nozawa, groups of people. Just a thin dusting of snow this morning at base and ski areas who are reporting any reporting up to 5cm (Happo-one at Riesen quad). There's mixed visibility at the moment - limited in places, but brighter in others. At this very moment I could just see the sun from behind the clouds, but it's got hidden once again now. After a bright morning there was some light snow falling yesterday afternoon, but it didn't amount to much in terms of new cm. Not much of a wind and not too cold. The weather reports are for snow (actually, they said rain, but I'm hoping that's down below), but it's partly cloudy now with the sun shining through at times. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . So what do we have today. Well, early morning it was cloudy with some light snow falling in places, but as it approaches 9am there's an increasing amount of blue sky around and the sun is out. It is turning into a fine morning. Like yesterday, it is going to be a relatively mild day with temperatures venturing into low + numbers. The only snow being reported by ski areas is 5cm on the Usagidaira area of Happo-one and 3cm over at Hakuba Cortina. Oh hold on. 47 are reporting 5cm on their social media but not on their website. I think in some cases they can only go with 0cm or 5cm, so if it's 1cm or 2cm... that gets rounded down to become 0cm. (That is a guess based on observations checking things every day for many years. I'd love to know how it works in each case. Information regarding ski area operations is manually checked every morning and is believed to be correct at the time of the report. SnowJapan is an entirely independent operation. Our daily reports are not posted on behalf of ski areas or any other business or organisation. Since first going online in 1999, the integrity of this website has always been our top priority, and it is something we are not prepared to compromise. All content is carefully created and written by humans who share a passion for the subject and what SnowJapan stands for. About SnowJapan.com About the daily reporting on SnowJapan.com
