  • Myoko Now: Thursday 14th December 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 54cm Snowfall at base this season 196cm Posted on Thursday 14th December 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Man, when it snows... After yesterday’s report, the switch really turned on. We had 44cm by evening, and 54cm in total by morning. There was some pretty good wind at times, too; during the 6am snow moving (it really isn’t removal, is it?), there were a couple of complete whiteouts, with high winds. Offshore, the winds bringing the snow are really howling, even now, so we could see some more gusting conditions. Pretty quiet now. To be honest, conditions are shockingly good for the start of the season. Terrifyingly excellent. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A bit more snow through the day yesterday and into today; a nice base is building up there for the increased openings from Friday. Interested to see the first snow reports up from Arai, who are posting 209cm at one of the lift stations. Possible, but... Maybe we have a new contender with Seki for the most enthusiastic reporting. And, after a certain point, when we know there’s good, solid coverage, we’re going to be more interested in that daily fall anyway, right? The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It seemed like we were going to get a lot of snow overnight, with a quick flash of lightning - one of the sure signs of heavy snow - at about 10 pm. At 6 this morning, though, there was maybe 10cm of snow on the ground and nothing much falling. Before 7, though, it really started to come down, so we might get another good addition to the base through the day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The 2017-2018 season is now officially begun. Started. Going. Can't think about grammar after bouncing for two hours in a front loader, clearing that 25cm or so of fresh snow that fell since yesterday. Now it's sunny, perfect for a first ski, even if it's only Akakura Onsen and there's not that much on the ground. A more positive spin: there's a lot more on the ground than we would probably get this early in the season. Some resorts are reporting snow depths, so we'll give their information when possible. • Myoko Now: Sunday 19th November 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this season 23cm Posted on Sunday 19th November 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The first real snow has fallen all the way to base level and below (a full 23cm! Accurately measured with my high-precision tools in an ideal location). So it’s time for that first report for season 2017-2018. I know there are a lot of people out there itching for that first snow - but remember, too, that there’s a good reason the resorts won’t open for a month. We always get a pretty heavy snow in November that brings down branches and annoys people who forgot to change to their snow tires, but it won’t last. Looks good, though. For this season: The big news, of course, is the opening/rising from the dead of Arai, now known as the 'Lotte Arai Resort'. It’s still big, it’s going to be expensive, but beyond that we don’t know that much about who is being targeted. Lots of rumors, not much hard news coming out yet. There will be some off-piste areas open, some not. Anyway, keep tuning in on this one. We’ll also be adding Kurohime Kogen Ski Park this year. It’s across the border - just - in Nagano, but it’s physically close to Myoko and adds a family-friendly resort to our area. The snow has stopped falling now, at just around 11 am, but the word is that it might continue for the next couple of days. It’s not impossible that it might stay, and the resorts could open early. It has happened, and SnowJapan will let you know as soon as the word comes out. Now, back to trying to figure out how to put the chains back on my front loader. And then to replace the snowthrower’s battery... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Here we are, the last day of the season for the resorts... and the snow held out to the very end! And a nice day out there for it, too. The wind will pick up from tomorrow, and rain looks likely next week, so the timing is great - and there's still lots of snow up high for the backcountry people as well! It was a really good season for Myoko - lots of snow, lots of people, no major accidents (apart from lost sidecountry skiers). If you're off the runs, you're in the backcountry and you need the gear, the skills and the experience. We want people to ski tomorrow, too! Until next season. • Myoko Now: Wednesday 22nd February 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1288cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day is starting sunny in Myoko, not too warm, not too cold. The snow continued on and off through the day yesterday, for a few added cms of white. The clouds are building up, though; off the coast the winds are light and from the south — a clear sign of what lies ahead (that is, rain again). In fact, the forecast has gotten worse over the past few days, with the freezing line predicted to go higher to 2,250 meters on Thursday morning. I guess this isn't that uncommon for February; powder snow often comes back in March! I got an interesting call from a local friend and crazy skier. Apparently he set off a pretty sizeable avalanche in the sidecountry yesterday, and wanted to share the warning with everyone - and much appreciated, too! After the winds of a few days ago, there is a lot of wind-deposited snow that may be holding together in slabs. He also said there was a lot of whumphing - the snow dropping suddenly as a weak layer under the top layer of snow collapses, a definite sign to be careful. Could be caused by the rain layer, the new snow, changing conditions. Regardless, it's a good day to be a little cautious in areas where snow has gathered, on lee slopes, on big steep and open faces. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Today's' report comes in a break in the daily wrassling with the snow. Don't get me wrong, it's great; the only problem for residents is where to put it all. At least today was a "light" 33cm, but it's still coming down steadily. But when you have a few places to get cleared out in the early morning, it gets a bit, ah, tiring.... Still glad to see it coming down, and all the snow-removal machinery is working well so no complaints. Some winds early in the morning again. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow! More fun! More shoveling! Another 50+cm this morning, adding to our already healthy snowpack. Last year's low snow cover and high bush/tree factor are now gone from the collective consciousness. I realized at the end of the day yesterday that I spaced out on the report - sorry about that! The result of throwing the seven belts that drive the auger of my snowthrower, then working with my trusty and reliable repairman so I kind of know what's going on under that fire engine red hood... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Man, it's busy in Myoko when the snow falls! OK, we also started the seasonal business yesterday, so that was exciting, but there was also plowing to be done today in multiple places (and the effects of an opening party to overcome). And a report to get written, so let's go! Not a lot more snowfall overnight to add to yesterday's 20cm. I figured the total was about 38cm (so an additional 18cm). It's looking great out there, and I heard the skiing was outstanding; a great way to start the season for Akakan. More openings ahead, too, so by next week we'll be in full operations. • Myoko Now: Friday 16th December 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 183cm Posted on Friday 16th December 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is coming down, and it is coming down GOOD! Just in time for our second opening, at Akakan, with more to come tomorrow. I'm going to give a real round number right now&madash;20 cm—because it is really snowing Myoko style this morning. We wondered a bit, with a beautiful moon shining down last night and nothing falling when we went to bed (and way to late, I have to say; daughter is back from high school and we had to get some panic projects done until wee hours). So it's probably only begun over the past few hours. Powder time today! Get out there and start the season the right way (who needs artificial snow?). The resorts that are open aren't all sending snow reports; some are old.
