Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 22cm
Snowfall at base this season 724cm

Posted on Wednesday 16th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

It was raining in the late afternoon and evening last night, but it's nice light powder today. And lots of it. I measured the snow pretty early and got a figure of 22cm, but it's been falling hard since then. We'll go with that initial figure, and give the next 24 hour amount tomorrow — but just know that it's going to keep falling and accumulating and getting better and better.

It's nice light snow, too, on a settled base (the rain helped complete the firming up of the existing pack). A little gusting at moments, but generally we're seeing a light north wind at base level. Looks to be blowing pretty hard out in the ocean, typical for the times when we get heavy snow.

The forecast is for the snow to taper off, but so far so steady.
