Nice snowfall overnight; once again the official Niigata Prefecture prediction was just about right on the money (forecast of 35cm; actual at base 32cm). Oh yes, for evidence of this amount of fresh snowfall please see the photos below. It's nice, light snow, too. Could always use more, of course, and some of the weather shows are saying up to 70cm of additional snow by tomorrow morning. We’re ready, and I see that a lot of the locals (like your writer) spent some time in the warmer, sunnier days getting old snow out of the way in preparation for the new. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Real Myoko snow! More than 50cm on the ground this morning, and the snow just keeps on falling, with a few more centimeters arriving every hour. It’s hard work for the locals (hello), especially when the plows decide not to arrive until after 6 am, so roads were a bit crowded up to the time the resorts opened, but all is good now. With this much light, fresh snow, people in the backcountry should be careful about sluffing and even falling - a few reports of people crashing upside-down and not being able to get out without aid. A reliable friend should be in your toolkit today (of course with avalanche beacon, shovel, probe, whenever you head off the groomed courses). More snow than expected overnight; it was cold and quiet late last evening, and blowing and snowy early this morning, with 40 cm in a quiet spot and lots of blowing elsewhere. And it is snowing hard out there. Sad news from Lotte Arai, where a pair of skiers went off course - not intentionally, it seems - and did not make it out. Gotta be careful with the cold and the deep (but this was a very unfortunate and unusual case). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow and snow and some wind and a bit more snow. And cold—the news says the coldest day in the entire Heisei era (the past 30 years). The official snow poke says 51 cm of new snow, and it is still falling out there. It’s going to be a tough day for people who want to hike up, and not entirely safe, either: there was stuffing and whumpfing on an rain/ice layer down in the pack. We also have some people lost on the hill since last night after heading off from the ski area (more later). Please be smart, because the conditions are not easy to deal with. But it is great to see some real Myoko days out there after that rain twice this month. The wind may remain strong for the next few days, so lift closings are possible. Clearing snow is not fun, but the skiing makes it worth it all! Some super powder yesterday, and today is even better. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not as much snow as the forecasts predicted, but not as strong winds, either. A few moments of southwest wind blasts, especially right after all the lifts closed down (my office windows suddenly went all white). But it was a good snow, and steady applications of 30cm or so is much more welcome than a dump of 60 and then the sun/snow again. Nice and cold, too. But it is still snowing; Niigata prefecture is predicting 25cm up to 4pm. The Akakan Hotel No. 2 is down as of midday. Probably won’t last long, they say (and that’s usually the case). Suginohara’s No. 3 also closed yesterday and today becausee of wind. The wind was really strong up high yesterday, too. About the volcanic eruption at Kusatsu-Shirane-san in Gunma Prefecture on 23rd January 2018 As you may have heard, yesterday morning there was a limited volcanic eruption followed by an avalanche in western Gunma Prefecture, close to the border with northern Nagano Prefecture. The eruption at Motoshirane happened close to the more famous Kusatsu-Shirane-san - and also the slopes of the Kusatsu Kokusai ski resort. Around 80 skiers were evacuated to an area near the upper area of Kusatsu-Shirane with some trapped in the gondola and on lifts for a while. Very sadly, as a result of this event there was one fatality and a number of injuries, apparently due to flying rocks and the avalanche. As far as we can tell there have been no further eruptions since yesterday morning. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and caught up in this. This incident made the international news with some people visiting Japan asking if their ski resort will be safe, and so we thought we would add this information to our daily reports this morning. The only ski resort affected by this event is Kusatsu Kokusai in Gunma Prefecture. It is currently unclear how this will affect the top area of the resort, but it seems that the lower slopes of Kusatsu Kokusai will remain open today – those slopes are quite a distance from the affected area. (And perhaps this is a good example of how Japanese people are used to living with the threat of earthquakes and volcanos!) The ski resorts in Shiga Kogen (Nagano) and Manza Onsen (Gunma) are the other closest ski resorts, but they are outside of the 2km restricted area -- and are unaffected. And of course, ski resorts that are further away than that are also totally unaffected. The central part of Kusatsu town itself is about 7km away from the volcano and so also unaffected. We hope this information helps. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Seems like everybody got snow except Myoko again; people traveling to Nagano got 20cm; even Tokyo got its heaviest snow since 2014. Not much yet as of this morning here, even as the winds have started to pick up. If the forecasts are correct, today is the day for wind; if it blows anywhere near the 60kph at 1000 meters that is predicted, the gondolas at Akakan and Suginohara are likely to close, as will other lifts open to the winds. Just hope the wind also brings some more powder! We can use a reset in the backcountry, and a rebuild of the snowpack on the groomed (so we can keep going into spring). Out early today (course judge for a cross-country race); basically nothing has changed from yesterday! Kind of weird to have wind from the east, and heavier cloud cover to the south and east than to the (more common) north and west. Tomorrow could be pretty wild, though, as a huge low pressure cell moves in and the wind really picks up. Keep an eye for lift closures if the predicted 70kph winds materialize in the afternoon. It’s turned into a nice day after a rainy start (it even looked like it was snowing way up high, following a pretty cold and wet Friday), and tomorrow is looking better than earlier forecasts. So let’s get out and ski (surrounded by green). Lotte Arai has made it to the end, with pretty good conditions from all reports. Nice views from up top, too. After railing at the ski resorts for not getting reports out early enough, here I am coming to you late on the second day of an expanded available resort menu. Well, there was snow to plow; there was a new snow plot to fire up for the first time (you’re going to get scientific snow depths!). 65cm so far, people! And I did ski yesterday and it was great; can only be greater today. It really is January-style snow, coming down at about 3 centimeters an hour. Heavy winds overnight. Crazy for this time of year. We’ve basically doubled the base overnight. One surprise: Suginohara had listed the 23rd for its opening date, but it’s open now!
