The cherry blossoms are almost over; we’re a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, and there is just no more snow around the base here. Your writer almost didn’t get this out; I was in Tohaku yesterday, where the temperature was a dry 29°C. Gotta say the thoughts of fun on snow evaporated a bit. Seki Onsen and Lotte Arai are hanging on; let’s see of they can make it to Golden Week! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The last day for Akakura Onsen, and we have fresh snow on the ground! Pretty funny after a March with very little snowfall at all. Looks nice, too - everything is clean and white again. Actually, it feels more like the first snowfall in November. There’s a big snowboard contest going on at Akakura Kanko today, and it looks like it will be a great day for it as the clouds are turning to blue skies. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1314cm Posted on Sunday 1st April 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's here: the last day for the season at most of the resorts. The snowpack has really come down, too, so I doubt there's going to be a whole lot more season even at the three that are soldiering on. Kind of a fitting end for a strange season, with rain in January, but enough snow on a regular schedule to make it pretty fun in the backcountry. Oh, yeah, and basically no snow at all in the whole month of March... The one big development was the opening (well, re-opening in a sense) of Lotte Arai Resort. Sounds like the facilities were pretty quiet (like not lots of people wandering the halls), and lots of space on the slopes as well. It sounds like the resort is thinking long-term, though, and it's probably smarter to build a clientele than get bombed from the first year. It's quite a different resort form all the others in the Myoko area, and choice is good, right? It's a nice day out there, though, and a good way to end the season, and it was a good season if not our best ever for snow. We'll just have to see how long Akakan, Seki Onsen and Lotte Arai can keep running, and Akakura Onsen until next week. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1314cm Posted on Saturday 31st March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is the second-to-the-last-day for most of the Myoko area resorts. Big cross-country race, and your truly is sitting about 1.5 kilometers out there on the course to check that the kids are all passing through properly. A mea culpa: it was calm early in the morning, but we had a pretty steady north wind through the day (as we found out, again, sitting out there in the open). That wind also released huge green clouds of pollen from the sugi trees. Lots of runny knots and itchy eyes out there. Warmer today and the prediction on wind is in fact calm. All the reports below are from yesterday, except for Lotte Arai which updates regularly (although not on the lifts). Add a couple of degrees, maybe; keep the snow about where these are, and you’ll be good. T Tomorrow I’ll report at a more normal time, and try to sum up this unusual season. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1314cm Posted on Wednesday 21st March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All that talk of heavy snow (NHK!) has not come to anything in Myoko (although the TV did show us the “heavy” snow falling in Kanagawa). The day is still just starting, so things could change… but I doubt that there will be a lot of new snow. There was a band of fresh snow right across the mountain, though, from just above the Akakura Kanko Hotel (about 1000 meters, right in the middle of the hill) up to the top of the lifts, so around 1550 meters. So I’m adding 2 cm just to be optimistic and accurate. The gondola at Suginohara has closed due to wind, while Akakan’s is still going. Could change if that wind picks up a bit more, so keep an eye on the reports. Looks like precipitation is just coming in from the southeast as we type, with the far mountains now obscured. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1312cm Posted on Tuesday 20th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain has turned to light snow; the national news is still reporting that it could really snow tomorrow. Looks like the Kanko area (including Tokyo) might get snow as well, which means white flakes falling during cherry blossom viewing in the capital city. It has been a unique season on the weather front. I’m a bit confused by Lotte Arai’s reporting; they noted some of their avalanche-controlled areas “Course closed” instead of “Temporarily closed” yesterday, but they’re back to temporary only. When in doubt, check their website before going! And good job, Seki Onsen, for finally revising your snow depth (-50cm overnight, even with the snow falling! Yes, I am being snarky...) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1310cm Posted on Saturday 17th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Strong north winds through the day and especially in the evening yesterday. Colder than recent days as well, with minus numbers posted, We got about 2 cm of round pellets at base up to the morning; it was trying to snow earlier but we’re now seeing some blue patches here and there. I actually hope the forecast are correct and we get some sun to warm up that snowpack; it’s a bit crusty out in the natural snow and looks like it would be hard to get some nice, elegant turns in (more like hop and hope?). It would just be nice on the resorts, too, to go back to some sunny spring skiing for a few days before we go back to rain and snow. Or so it appears. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 1291cm Posted on Tuesday 6th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We got the rain, we got the wind, but we didn’t get the heavy snow some sites were predicting. It’s basically dust on crust today, with the soft snow of the weekend now hard and just 4 cm of ice pellets and soft hail on top. Not a great day off the piste, for sure, although it could be just fine on the courses. The wind is occasionally kicking up as well, so, as always, watch for lift closures. There is snow falling, but it’s pretty small soft hail and ice pellets, and not building up very quickly... Sunny tomorrow? That might be nice…. Then rain again Thursday and Friday? Not such good news. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 1287cm Posted on Friday 2nd March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . That wind keeps on blowing; once again, it’s shifted from the north to the southwest, and the snow that north wind was bringing has now ended. Not a lot overnight; my snow study boards blew over so I’m estimating on the fresh (but it’s just a bit). It did snow through the day higher up, so the areas are reporting up to 15cm of fresh on their higher runs. Offpiste things could be a little tricky today, with that mush from yesterday gaining some fresh stuff that could slide (we might already be in the season for soft snow slides; noticed a higher danger level at the Japan Avalanche Network). The temperatures are colder than yesterday, but I have a feeling things will warm up quickly today, and continue through the weekend. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday’s strange weather resulted in a little more snow than the forecasted 10cm, so we have some nice soft stuff on top of a good solid base. The winds of yesterday morning picked up a little last night, with some drifting and blowing snow - perhaps why Lotte Arai has closed much of its avalanche-controlled areas. Got to keep in mind if you area heading offsite, too; there may be some accumulation of wind-blown snow on lee slopes that can cause troubles. Otherwise a nice day. Some runs at Akakan are closed for the national competition now underway (but you get to check out the ski jumping, which is always a fun diversion in the day’s skiing).
