Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 156cm Posted on Tuesday 30th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After some fine weather yesterday and fairly mild conditions after the cold start to the day, we start this morning with some ominous looking clouds... and spots of rain. (It might be trying to snow higher up). The good news is that we are still looking forward to snow tomorrow and this time perhaps it might keep snowing for several days. We'll have to see just how much. The minimal snow base is just about enabling some lower level ski areas to be part open, with patches of ground showing through in places. Ski areas at higher elevations are faring better, as you would expect. But several days of consistent and sometimes heavy snow (please) is what everyone needs right now. So while it's certainly not exciting conditions this morning, we do have something to look forward to across the next few days. Tashiro Ropeway over at Kagura Ski Area had some kind of problem yesterday and it will also be closed today. So the Tashiro Area of Kagura is unavailable today. Let's hope they can fix whatever the problem is quickly. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 90cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both fully open The connection in the Northern Area with Ishiuchi Maruyama is open The Southern Area (and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen) is not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 60cm ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 90cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are generally open However, there is a problem with Tashiro Ropeway and so the Tashiro Area of the resort is closed today ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 50cm ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 125cm ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 60cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 90cm Base: 60cm Notes: The Dragondola connection between Naeba and the Tashiro Area (Kagura) is closed today; the Tashiro Area is closed due to a problem with the Tashiro Ropeway ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 60cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 40cm Base: 20cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 30cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 25cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Tuesday 30th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 156cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 10 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (on 27th December) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The forecast got it quite wrong for a period of yesterday when the skies cleared and we got some bright blue skies for a while. It is not snowing yet this morning, but we are almost definitely - surely - getting some today and beyond. I think we can be optimistic that we'll be getting a fair bit over the coming days. Personally, I'm hoping for some really big dumpage that will allow all the ski areas to get fully open and enjoy great conditions (once the storm passes). I'm guessing quite a few of you reading this will be thinking the same. I'll see you tomorrow in the New Year --- hopefully with good snow news! --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both fully open The connection in the Northern Area with Ishiuchi Maruyama is open The Southern Area (and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen) is not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 60cm ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 90cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are generally open However, there is a problem with Tashiro Ropeway and so the Tashiro Area of the resort is closed today ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 50cm ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 90cm ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 60cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 90cm Base: 60cm Notes: Both of the base areas (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open The Dragondola connection between Tashiro Area and Naeba is scheduled to be open ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 60cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 40cm Base: 20cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 30cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 20cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Wednesday 31st December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 156cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 10 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (on 27th December) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this seas 169cm Posted on Thursday 1st January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and a happy new year to all readers and friends of SnowJapan. We have a layer of fresh snow on the ground this morning. Hurray! But first let me rewind a bit. We were expecting snow during the day yesterday but, once again, we ended up with something different. We got extended periods of blue sky and sunshine while it was snowing in northern regions of Niigata. That has been known to happen, but it's pretty frustrating when you are yearning for the fluffy stuff. Forecasts all told us to expect snow, but that only started to happen later on in higher elevations (with some rain lower down) and then turning properly into snow overnight. OK so this morning it is snowing. The new snowfall measurement for the morning, as of 9am, is 13cm. It's not a massive amount, but very welcome all the same and much needed out on the slopes. More of a plaster than a full recovery. Ski areas are still in 'part open' status and the snow depth numbers are all still low (very low at some). So we want much more and a good old consistent Snow Country-style storm would be perfect. Forecasts promise snow clouds to be with us and bringing us that precious snow across the next several days, so the numbers should be increasing steadily - and hopefully quickly at times. Let's have it! The top Kagura Number 5 pair lift opens from this morning. That lift is open from 9:30am through 12 noon. Quite a long way from Yuzawa, but congratulations to Budoh Ski Area up in the northern part of Niigata Prefecture. It has closed at the end of last season, with the ski lifts due to be removed, but a company came in and saved it. That ski area opens this morning under the name 'Budoh Snow Resorts' (curiously plural on official stuff). You can of course find it on SnowJapan! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this seas 197cm Posted on Friday 2nd January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More snow to report this morning. It was snowing for most of the time yesterday and ranged from light snow to relatively short spells of heavier snow; though never really getting into the 'relentless mad snow' level (the one I love so much). Still, including a measurement yesterday evening and subsequent wiping off the measuring point, and the additional snow overnight, I can report 28cm of fresh today. Good. Very welcome. But let's keep going! Light snow has been falling early this morning but has just eased off as I write this. There are even a few signs of some brighter skies and perhaps even a bit of sun breaking through the clouds. Perhaps temporary. We'll just have to see. But forecasts still show snow with us today and tomorrow. (It's worth noting that forecasts over the last week or so have turned out to be off-target to varying degrees, so it's feels hard to know exactly what to expect at the moment). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this seas 232cm Posted on Saturday 3rd January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm very happy to report some very good snowfall overnight. After clearing some yesterday evening, I have just cleared another 32cm of snow. Total 35cm since my last report. Excellent. The only new snowfall info I can find from ski areas is 40cm from Kagura and 20-30cm being reported by Naeba. They don't do that every day. (A common moan on these reports dating back many years is the lack of this info each morning... I so wish they would make it a habit to say how much fresh snow has fallen each morning) Anyway, it is still snowing with more due through today, so hopefully there might be another good number to report tomorrow. This snowfall is really going to help and the official snow depths are starting to catch up now. Forecasts indicate some sun tomorrow morning with more snow coming in on Monday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 241cm Posted on Sunday 4th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some more snow since my report yesterday morning along with another 5cm or so overnight, so there's another 9cm to add to this report. There's quite a lot of cloud to the north but, as of 7:45am, there's a lot of blue sky over Yuzawa. It looks like those clouds to the north might be moving over to us, but forecasts seem to indicate a generally clear morning. The groomed slopes are looking very inviting in the early morning sunshine. Back to some snow tomorrow perhaps, but also a chance of rain with some milder conditions. It would be great if we could avoid that. The recent snow has been most welcome, but we're still low on snow and most ski areas are still not able to get 100% open. Today will be the last day of the new year holidays for many people. We can usually expect places to get less busy in the afternoon as people start to make their way back home. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was a bit of 'oh no, rain' feeling going on, but this morning the outlook is much better so we can put that to one side. This morning there was a very respectable 32cm of fresh snow on our trusty measuring point as if 8am. It is still snowing and so there will should be more to report tomorrow morning, but it might not last the day with less forecast this afternoon. We might get some sunshine tomorrow but there's more snow coming in on Thursday. Sounds good. Bring it on! Wind might be a problem today and indeed the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed, so the Dragondola between Tashiro and Naeba is also closed. Other lifts may be affected. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 283cm Posted on Wednesday 7th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We enjoyed some good snowfall yesterday, with another 10cm to add since the early morning report yesterday. It was only snowing lightly by evening, and there's just a dusting on the top of my car this morning. There should be some good conditions to enjoy out there this morning. We were expecting clear skies this morning, but it is mostly just grey and cloudy early on, and there's a noticeable (southerly) wind as well. Hopefully the wind won't be affecting lifts (and I can't find any early morning wind-related announcements). Many local forecasts still show clearer skies for today, particularly in the afternoon. Tomorrow we should be receiving more snow and possibly quite a lot of it again. Friday and Saturday are currently forecast to be clearer. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 9th January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this seas 334cm Posted on Friday 9th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been a very good 24 hours for snowfall. The snow had just started to fall when I posted early yesterday morning and it has been snowing since then, lightly at times but for some spells during the day it was snowing heavily. With a few clearings along the way, I have wiped off 51cm at our trusted measuring point over the last 24 hours. (There has been about 5cm more than that at SJHQ a little to the north in the Minamiuonuma valley). Excellent. It is still snowing early on this morning, lightly at the moment, but there are signs of clearing skies just to the north already. It is due to ease off sometime this morning and we might end up with some sun today. Sun is forecast from early on tomorrow and throughout the day. I would expect a lot of people preparing for a weekend trip. Saturday will probably be the busiest day as there's potential for more heavy snow incoming on Sunday. For the record, Monday is a national holiday in Japan (Coming of Age Day) and so it's a long-weekend, traditionally one of the most popular/busy of the ski season. Thankfully, everyone visiting should be able to enjoy very good snow conditions for it. Hopefully ski areas that haven't yet been able to reach 'fully open' status will be close to being able to now. One major example is the Southern Area and downhill course at GALA Yuzawa, along with the Ropeway link between that ski area and Yuzawa Kogen. Those usually open up when the snow is deeper. I imagine that is going to happen very soon. (I don't have any official information to share about that situation at this moment; purely personal thought). The snow levels in my back garden are still lower than usual/average for the date, but much improved and it's great to have snow walls growing by the side of roads. Let them continue to grow quickly. You can probably tell how much I love it when we get large amounts of snow! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 334cm Posted on Saturday 10th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is a beautiful morning here in Yuzawa. A bit of cloud early on for first lifts, but the skies are pretty much clear now with bright sunshine. There is also a moderate wind, but not enough to spoil the fun at most ski areas --- but it does looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura (and the Dragondola) is closed for the day. The downhill course at GALA Yuzawa is scheduled to open for the first time this season sometime this morning. (The Southern Area of that ski-jo... not yet). Tomorrow looks set to bring us interesting weather. The forecasts generally seem to predict snow - perhaps heavy at times - and potentially strong winds. Those strong winds, if they happen, may well affect some lifts at some ski areas. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 160cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area are both fully open The connection in the Northern Area with Ishiuchi Maruyama is open The downhill course (Falcon) is scheduled to open from today The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 160cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 140cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 160cm Base: 110cm Notes: The Tashiro Area is closed today due to wind ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 95cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 180cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 200cm Base: 110cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 100cm Notes: Dragondola closed today as the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed due to wind Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 130cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 70cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 85cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 10th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 334cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 17 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 51cm (on 9th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 178cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 12th January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 58cm Snowfall at base this seas 392cm Posted on Monday 12th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. First of all, I spent almost all day yesterday indoors and so only observed what the weather was doing from inside (and webcams and from friends). But it sure seemed varied and a bit... weird! After the wet start, we got into snow falling in the morning, followed by an unexpected period of blue increasing blue sky and sun, and then back to some very heavy snow by evening and overnight. Oh yes, along with with some noisy winds, particularly overnight. It was great to see the snow really coming down hard and very quickly accumulating. Two measuring point snow clearing sessions later, we have measured a total of 58cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday morning. With the wind, there is probably going to be more than that - and less than that - depending on where you are. But wherever you are in the region, there's a lot of lovely fresh snow around this morning. It has been snowing this morning, too, but in the last hour or so has been easing off and there is even some blue sky around now. Should be a nice treat for people heading out this morning. (The current clearer skies might well be temporary). Until this year, a few ski areas in this region mentioned new snowfall every morning. (Very) unfortunately, that reporting seems to be very rare this season. Almost all of them only talking about 'snow depth', which really isn't anywhere near as useful or interesting a number as how much fresh snow has fallen each day. A good example is today. Most of the snow depth numbers have either not changed or have increased just a bit. But we have had over half a metre of snowfall since yesterday! It's hard to understand how ski areas don't think that the new snowfall is not worth mentioning. Anyway, it is what it is. I wonder if it's just because everywhere is struggling with there not being enough staff? Actually, I just noticed that Yuzawa Kogen is today mentioning 50cm of snow overnight. But that info is buried and you have to go looking for it. I will mention any reported new snowfall numbers when I see them. I'll shut up about that for now! - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 13th January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 392cm Posted on Tuesday 13th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was another kind of curious day of changeable weather with spells of clearer skies and sun and then light snow in higher places. We have enjoyed some fine weather this morning so far. A lot of blue sky and sunshine with some white cloud. Very pleasant. But there is a bit of a (southerly) wind. I'm seeing conflicting information - on official sites - regarding the status of Kagura ski area. It's either only the Tashiro Area that is closed or the whole lot closed. Looks like it might be the former. There's also some grey cloud to the north and forecasts warn of the chance of rain during today sometime which will hopefully turn to snow sometime tonight or early tomorrow. And tomorrow it should be snowing. I agree with what my Myoko Now report posting friend said the other day: we have similarly enjoyed some days of good snow, but so far this season that heavy snowfall hasn't continued for long... we haven't had any of those classic 3-4 days of relentless heavy snow. Yet. (Hopefully we'll get some of that. It is important for a long season). Ski areas have snow now, so we're doing ok but, big picture, snow levels are still below average. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 190cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 90cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 160cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 170cm Base: 120cm Notes: Both Ropeway bases (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open, along with the Dragondola connection with Naeba ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 115cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 190cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 210cm Base: 110cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 100cm Notes: Dragondola not open this morning due to weather conditions Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 135cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 160cm Base: 80cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 95cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 100cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Tuesday 13th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 392cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 18 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 12th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 236cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
