Black on yellow is a private kei car (up to 660cc).

Yellow on black is a commercial kei vehicle (again up to 660cc). People working for the franchise delivery service Akabou (Red hat?) use kei trucks, for example.

Green on white is private car.

White on green is a commercial vehicle. Taxis and trucks, etc.

So there you go!

I don't understand the theory of advertising for kei cars. We're sort of in the market for one, but the advertisers aren't giving us much help.

For example, there's a TV ad for a certain kei that involves people dancing and jumping around a car with coloured umbrellas. Nowhere in the ad do they say "This car is good because it is a kei, and you would do well to buy it because it drives nicely." Surely most people either want a kei, or not. Advertisers could drop a subtle hint by having at least a license plate on the car in kei colours.

But they don't, which leads me to think that advertisers are overpaid and need a good smack in the head.
