Dear Goober Locals, where does the road numbered 322 go? Is it open in winter? Why are snowmen dame on it?

If I remember well his road goes deep in the mountains. There are some hotels up to the point that the snowman mark is but after that it becomes a mountain road. The snowman mark means that this road closes during winter time.

That road opens for Golden Week

In winter there are gates blocking both roads at the junction where the 322 sign is on the map

It's the road up to Sarukura, one of the start points for hiking up to Mt. Shirouma.

I'm not 100% sure but for the first month or so after it opens they only allow public transport up there (Buses/Taxis). There is a nice onsen (Obinata no yu) up there).

There is a lodge at the end of the road (summer only), but no hotels above the "G"

They have had a problem with delinquent snowmen up there spud. They just decided to ban them outright.

There is the Obinata no yu hot spring just at the 322 icon but it's not available in winter they say because of deep snow which perhaps disable us to go deeper the 322?

All the better for banning snowmen, they are as much trouble as a hat full of arseholes.

 

Thanks for the info on that road. I was just playing with google maps and it jumped out at me as a unique feature on both the photo and topo map. Closed snowy roads can make excellent access paths into and out of valleys below sought after higher alpine areas.

 

ps - take a look at Fuji on the google maps photo image. It looks like it just erupted!
