in honshu they are sometimes required. Maybe in Hokkaido there is a different rule. On Honshu if you dont have studless tires there are times when the police will ask you to turn around.

 

For cheap tires look at Taihei tires online.

If you only have summer tires then chains are a must. You can get most anywhere with chains. Just at a slower speed.

You can almost always get by with just snow tires though. If not then maybe it's best to pull over and wait for the plow anyways.

... bit disappointed though, you being a Kanuck 'n all and spelling it as 'tire', when we ALL know it's 'TYRES'. ;\)

P.s: Chains are also good in muddy conditions.
