jacko 3
Ok, I've been skiing in Japan at the following places: Hakuba (when it was pretty well aussie and pommy free) Shiga Kogen Rusutsu Furano Nozawa Onsen Apart from Niseko where next? Zao? Road trip? Mt Grandview? I'm all for a generally Australian free ski experience in Japan (after all, if I want to ski with my fellow aussies I'll just ski at home!) So... suggest away! muikabochi 208
You haven't mentioned this area of Niigata. There's lots to choose from in a small area, and really still not many foreigners at all. Some places more than others (Kagura, Naeba, GALA), but still relatively few. On all but two of the days below, I didn't see another gaijin face while I was there. Mostly quiet - sometimes extremely quiet - on weekdays. Here's my reports from this season so far. http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23572-maiko-snow-resort-minamiuonuma-niigata-10th-january-2014 http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23548-iwappara-yuzawa-niigata-7th-january-2014-am http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23549-yuzawa-kogen-yuzawa-niigata-7th-january-2014-pm http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23490-gala-yuzawa-yuzawa-niigata-25th-december-2013 http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23493-muikamachi-hakkaisan-minamiuonuma-niigata-26th-december-2013 http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23503-mt-granview-minamiuonuma-niigata-29th-december-2013 http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/23476-maiko-snow-resort-minamiuonuma-niigata-23rd-december-2013 It's Mt Granview, by the way. Be careful with the spelling! I love going to Zao, and think it's great, but it's out there on its own.
Alexander L 80
yeah Granview or you could find yourself in a parallel universe

muikabochi 208
Sorry not much reading really, just looking. (Oh and it's Mt Granview).
Gunma Boarder 14
Gunma also has some nice places. I especially like Kawaba and Houdaigi. If you see a gaijin it will probably be me or the New Zealanders who live in Minakami and do backcountry tours (definitely not many tourists). That said the Niigata area is also a good bet, but both can be done on the same trip from Tokyo.
muikabochi 208
Do you like White World Oze, Gunma Boarder?

Gunma Boarder 14
Do you like White World Oze, Gunma Boarder? I've actually never been, but have heard good things. It is on the "to do" list for this year.
muikabochi 208
I am planning to go there again this year, I remember enjoying it when I went some years ago. Just need to try and time it well weather wise.
jacko 3
As I look at lots of TR's on here I'm starting to think "road trip". Having a car and being to sample a pile of resorts around Niigata looks pretty appealing, even for an old fart like me.
