‘Violent’ barrister ‘waved penis about’ at wedding

Best man Christopher Dunn is up before a court for his behaviour at a wedding

A drunken barrister accused of exposing himself to bridesmaids before battering a guest at a wedding told his victim he would ‘seriously beat him up’, a court has heard.

Best man Christopher Dunn, 40, so offended women and children guests at the country hotel reception, that David Baird-Dean stepped in to drag him away.

Dunn was threatened with police being called but guests relented when he offered an abject apology and pleaded as a barrister he would be in trouble if arrested, Preston Crown Court heard.

But hours later the heavily built lawyer allegedly beat his victim until he was unconscious after ushering him onto a sun terrace outside the venue, Harefield Hall Hotel in Pateley, Bridge, North Yorkshire.

He had to be dragged away by fellow guests, the jury was told.

Mr Baird-Dean, 48, suffered such severe injuries that surgeons had to use metal plates and screws to reattach his upper jaw and both eye sockets to his skull. He was unable to go back to his job as a mechanic for more than a year.

Mr Baird-Dean, cross examined by Dunn’s barrister, Paul Greaney, denied concocting the story to support his £27,000 criminal injuries claim.

“It was him saying to me he was going to beat me up seriously because I had insulted him by making him put his d*** away,” the witness told the court.

“The guy is 18 stone isn’t he?”

Mr Greaney pointed to some “discrepancies” on the four statements the victim gave to police, with more detail in later ones – to support the claim he suggested.

“To give you the best chance of getting money at the end of the day?” Mr Greaney said.

“I did not remember the detail at the time,” the witness said. “It’s not lies or trying to cover anything up.

“Why should I be this violent monster. I have no violence towards Christopher Dunn even today. I just want to see justice done.”

The court heard how on July 1 last year Dunn had been invited to be one of two best men at a ceremony to reaffirm the wedding vows of Rosalind andteenage Russell Poole 10 years after they were married.

Its alleged the trouble began when Dunn was asked if he had a tattoo of a white rose, to which he replied, “I’ll show you a white rose” – then unzipped his trousers and pulled out his penis.

He then began waving it about in front of teenage bridesmaids and female guests.

Japan's Education Ministry says it is revising teaching manuals for schools to set out its ownership of disputed islands.

Minister Hakubun Shimomura said Japan wanted to teach its children "about integral parts of its territory".

The disputed territory includes islands in the East China Sea controlled by Japan but also claimed by China, and islands controlled by South Korea.

The disputes have caused tension between Japan and the two countries.

'Natural to teach'

The revision approved by the Education Ministry will affect history and geography classes in junior and senior high schools.

It will say that islands in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, and the South Korea-controlled Dokdo islands, known as Takeshima in Japan, are "integral parts of Japanese territory".

"From the educational point of view, it is natural for a state to teach its children about integral parts of its own territory," Mr Shimomura said.

He added that "with the co-operation of our Foreign Ministry, we will explain the country's position to our neighbours".

South Korea has protested the move, with officials calling the meaning of the revision a "very serious" matter, says Yonhap news agency.

Seoul also planned to summon the Japanese ambassador to South Korea to lodge a complaint, Yonhap added.
