Popular Post muikabochi 208
So much for the snow storm this weekend! Well, so far anyway. This morning the clouds soon dispersed and left us with some beautiful blue skies in Minamiuonuma and Yuzawa. I was expecting a day resting as the snow piled up outside, but it was a quick change of plans and out to Kandatsu Kogen in Yuzawa. We went past Ishiuchi Maruyama on the way, and there was hardly anyone there. Much the same story at some other resorts around town. Kandatsu wasn't busy either really. Certainly not as busy as you would expect a resort to be on a Saturday + Christmas Eve. Got to feel that the forecasts for blizzards put some people off coming from afar today, so not good for the ski resorts. The snow was great though. Lots of snow hanging on the trees and lots of deep snow to play in as well. Peak season quality. Very nice indeed. Clouds started moving in early afternoon. Hopefully we will get that snow storm starting tonight. Yes, please! I was excited Posing outside the phone box as we went past And at Kandatsu Yuzawa Weeeheeeeee!! Late lunch at Ninjintei Clouds moving in as we made our way home. That's Ishiuchi Maruyama in the distance there looking back from Minamiuonuma. SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 25, 2011 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 25, 2011 Looks like fun there muikabochi. I see you chose the right menu in Ninjin as well
muikabochi 208
Haha yes. Their menu isn't that extensive anyway is it really? But hire-katsu teishiku is definitely the way to go at Ninjintei.

nippontiger 8
Another 30-40 cms last night - looking good for my trip there tomorrow!!
muikabochi 208
yes the snow should be great... It was yesterday even! Must say though, I'm not that keen on Kandatsu. Can't quite put my finger on why. I think it's not just because they keep too much of it closed too much of the time.... Milky Way was still not open yesterday. Got my shots from there, very unlikely to go back this season.
Tubby Beaver 209
Its too small IMO. Hardly anyone was there which was great, but the runs are really short and you get bored quite easily
nippontiger 8
Yeah, its a bit on the small side, but I think its fine just for a day trip once in a while - I usually go there when there's been a big dump and it looks like it might be too windy at Kagura - Ive been to Kagura a few times when they've closed the top lifts through high winds and Id much rather be at Kandatsu. Also it was just 7000 yen vs 9400 for Kagura. I have to say though, I've never been there when they opened the milky way course - Im not sure why that they choose to close that one every time and Im pretty much certain it wont be open tomorrow. Any recommendations for alternatives around Yuzawa when it's forecast for windy conditions?
muikabochi 208
Kandatsu seem to forever be on the brink of not opening, and change owners about once a year. I can only guess they keep lifts, courses closed to save cash. That quad on the far left hasn't been open for many years now. Not that it is actually needed as the central quad covers Milky Way. They don't seem to do much grooming now either, which of course will be a plus for some. No, not keen. View from the top are great though.

Yuki Baba 0
Nice photographs. I have memories there, I worked there a long time ago.
muikabochi 208
Hi Yuki Baba! How busy did it get when you were there? I'm keen to hear, I have heard horror stories of the crowds at Kandatsu. Very quiet now on most days it is, I reckon things might have changed quite dramatically.
oo 1
Probably down to a quarter what it was at peak, that seems to be the number for lots of skijo. Heck of a big chunk to get taken away.
