Go Native 70
Yeah but there's no post office in Hirafu....
Tubby Beaver 209
thats no good then. where is the closest one...Kutchan?

thursday 1
pray they are not both out of order. Or out of money.
SantaCruz 0
Man, that sucks =( So no international ATMs in Hirafu at all?
Go Native 70
Um there is an international ATM in Hirafu, as stated above, but it does not now accept Mastercard. This is the first year that one has been available in Hirafu though. Japan hasn't quite caught on to the idea that you can pretty much do away with cash in this modern world. In Hirafu though many places do now accept credit cards because of the influx of foreigners.
mockkie 0
I was thinking of getting those cash cards from travellex or flight centre... would these be generally accepted anywhere? particularly Niseko? I plan on bringing sufficient cash to Niseko anyway, but also need money for touring later..
stemik 14
Just to let people know, the ATM in 7/11 in Hakuba does now NOT accept MasterCard.
JA2340 16
AMEX forex do a better rate than Travelex, AND they charge way less commission! AND delivery within a week to Post Offices around Oz. So ... I use them exclusively. Take the Visa for backup.
thursday 1
Stem. Thanks.
SantaCruz 0
If I could make a request for the people in Hirafu: So the international ATM doesn't take MasterCard. How about what it does take? Thanks
JA2340 16
SantaCruz, You might be waiting - they would probably have to try some out (and not likely to have that many international cards to try between them). AND, cash is still king in the burbs and out in the wilds of Hokkaido.
SantaCruz 0
Thanks JA. I'll probably bring enough cash to cover lodging + some extra. And then I'll use my credit card in Hirafu whenever I can.
foreversnow 5
I think that would be the best plan SC. We always bring enough cash and then just use the card if we are somewhere that they take it. Plus the great thing is you always feel like a billionaire with all those 10000 yens. SantaCruz 0
SH - I do love that about Japan. Adding those extra 0's on the end makes ya feel rich To bad the zero's don't follow us back home huh?
thursday 1
It takes Visa and Plus and Amex and JCB.

Just to be VERY clear, thursday, that refers to the Hirafu ATM at the 7/11? There is no 7-11 in Hirafu. The ATM is located in the Hokkaido Tracks Holidays office in the Yama Shizen East building. It's a 7-Bank ATM which is exactly the same as those in 7-11's throughout the country.
Tubby Beaver 209
but I think JA means that although the 7 banks don't accept mastercard/maestro, they do still accept Visa, Amex and JCB....right? Anyone know why Mastercard/ Maestro has been binned?
Go Native 70
Because their fees are too high or something like that. 7 Bank decided it isn't economical for them to deal with Mastercard.
JA2340 16
Actually, I was trying to clarify the reference. The ATM in Hirafu will accept Visa and Plus and Amex and JCB. There was an intervening post or two, and no reference that made sense to me (I know, slooow and stupid, but hey!), so asking for clarification. thanks GN for providing that!
