People are fat 'because they don't enjoy eating'

Recommended Posts

Mate sent me this last night.

(Cheeky git if you ask me, but...)

Seems the wrong way round somehow doesn't it?

Quote:
The mystery of why some people stay slim while others get fat may be partly explained by differences between the way individuals' brains measure the pleasure of eating.

Overweight people may actually find fatty or sugary food less satisfying than thin people, which leads them to overeating as a way of compensating for the relative lack of enjoyment.

A study of the brains of young women and adolescent girls found significant differences in the way thin and overweight individuals responded to drinking a chocolate milkshake, compared with a tasteless drink.

Using a scanner that measured the amount of activity in the "pleasure centre" of the brain, and a genetic test to determine an individual's genetic makeup, scientists could even predict which of the women would put on weight during the following year.

Interesting.

There is way more involved in weight gain than simply overeating, but I reckon there are heaps of factors - here is just another one. But one I had not heard before.

My brother went to school with a kid who had no concept of satiety - he never felt full, always wanted to eat more - and it didn't have to be food either. Was very very sad - it was a diagnosed disorder, and the poor boy died in his early teens due to it. He had no control over it at all.

Theres a book called 'how to eat' which remarkably tells you how to enjoy food.

The author says to eat slowly and really savour every bite. You then eat slower and need to eat less, and also appreciate it more.

She basically pads out the point above to a whole book.

However, the author of that books is nigella lawson IIRC, who is a bit chubby.

I was steadily putting on weight through my 20s, but it was easy to fix:

- only drink beer at social occasions

- eat more reasonable portions

- dont buy crap at the supermarket

- use exercise bike 3 times a week

- dont snack at work

This is what I tell my patients

1) Don't smoke

2) Eat sensibly

3) Drink in moderation

and 4) exercise regularly

If I can manage to pad that out to 300 pages, I might have my first book in press...

You're absolutely right, what was I thinking? No-one would buy it. Maybe if I got some Hollywood A-lister to write the preface?

That may generally be true but there are exceptions. I'm blessed with a fast metabolism. I can eat what I like and don't put on weight. Some people eat like a horse and they look look a horse.

If, by chubby, you mean not a stick insect but not with rolls of fat all over, then she may be. My assessment of NL is that she is very acceptably padded in all the right places.

Who cares of she's padded a basically simple concept into a whole book? That's what most non-textbook writers do.

(BTW her slippers are welcome under my bed any night!)
