muikabochi 208
Anyone know if they are planning on opening some kind of down the mountain course at Gala Yuzawa? I was there today and it looked like they were preparing a course - there was a fairly wide groomed course coming down the mountain (well, at least half way down).... closed of course but I took some photos. It would make sense because they have problems when it's windy and have to close the gondola down. (At the moment the only way down is using the gondola). Taken from the top of the short pair lift on the far side of the North Area - you can see the top of the gondola station on the right. From the gondola

SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted January 23, 2008 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted January 23, 2008 SJ#1 is away and going to be unavailable for about 10 days, muikabochi. I'll try to ask the resort though and will let you know if I find anything out. Never noticed that myself though I haven't been this season.
samurai 0
Personally... I would link short radius GS turns at about 80-90kms/hr down that face and not a flake of snow would leave the ground. but that's just me.
tsondaboy 0
Were you not tempted to go down the slope.
RobBright 35
Are you sure that's not the southern area? I know it is closed this year.
muikabochi 208
Considering - it IS in the North Area - it is north of the main gondola station, and - I know Gala Yuzawa well then yes, I am sure that it is not the southern area!

RobBright 35
sorry - when I read it back I wanted to delete but was too late! If it is an emergency route down due to winds - I calls dibs on on going down on it first!
muikabochi 208
OK! It's new, and it doesn't go down to the bottom - that is probably their biggest problem with making something like that. as it would be steep and narrow.
tsondaboy 0
Steep and narrow, that doesn't sound like a problem!
muikabochi 208
It sounds like a big problem for the company running the resort!
tsondaboy 0
I remember, they had huge problems last year. It wouldn't be the best way to get 1000 people of the mountain.
muikabochi 208
There's no run-off at the bottom, it would be very dangerous. Well thats what I thought when I looked yesterday around the bottom of the gondola....
