I have been in the UK for a few weeks now and one of the things I have been doing (as have others it seems) is scoffing a ton of pies. Savoury ones, sweet ones, oh yes pies are excellent and England is good at them. Trying to think of all the ones I have had

Steak

Steak & kidney

Steak pudding

Meat & potato

Cheese & onion

Chicken & mushroom

Others that my mum made & in restaurants and the like, I'll remember them later.

Something fairly new to me is the Chicken Balti pie. It seems that it is a big hit at footie grounds when games are on.

The Times does a "pie-chart" each week on Monday in their The Game supplement and it shows the pie breakdown for one game every week. This week it is the Millwall vs Cheltenham Town game. Here are the results:

Steak & kidney: 55%

Chicken balti: 23%

Chicken & mushroom: 22%

Not bad going for the relative newcomer there. I remember last week the chicken balti was up there as well.

Chicken Balti Pies are goooood!!!!!!!! Just watch though when you bite in as the gravy/sauce often spills over burning your hand.

I love Steak & Gravy pies though, theres a baker called Flemings from Arbroath but he supplies his lovely creations all over Eastern Scotland (if not the world!!!! ;\) ) and those bad boys are fantastic!

How about bean pies?? They are also great

i am a fan of the steak and chilli pie. i like a bit of kick. and it has to be STEAK (or at least chunky, good quality meat). mince don't cut it.

we have a pie appreciation club, unfortunately the website is still in development, (ie waiting for us to stop talking about it), but our general pie scoring is:

Filling ( /10)

Pastry Quality ( /10)

Structural Integrity/ Driveability (ie is it going to explode on you) ( /10)

Price ( /5)

Service ( /5)

Creativity (recipes, naming) ( /5)

Stangability (is there a vibe conducive to hanging out and enjoying your pie?) ( /5)

OVERALL JOYNESS ( /50)

We’ve even printed up little scorecards. Basically it’s a joke that’s been allowed to go too far… but we all appreciate a good pie

Bill Clinton and Al Gore go into a local diner for lunch. As they read the menu the waitress comes over and asks Clinton, “You ready to order?”

Clinton replies, “Yes, I’d like a quickie.”

“A quickie?!” the waitress replies. “Sir, given the current situation of your personal life I don’t think that is a good idea. I’ll come back when you are ready to order from the menu.” She walks away.

Gore leans over to Clinton and says, “It’s pronounced keesh.”

A pie thread thumbsup.gif

Your a genius Scouser. Why hadn't someone come up with this before?

I love pies. I'd have at least 3-4 a week, every week. I had one today, mint lamb and potato. I'd drive miles out of my way to visit my favorite pie shop.

I think we should take the whole 'best pie' thing up a level.

England vs Australia Pie test match.

Using the Spook approved judging format of course.

I've spent a lot of time in the UK and Oz, and I'm fairly independant.

Sorry Mantas, but a Mrs Mac's slurry dogshit gravy pie won't get you to the starting line. Anything that needs tomato sauce is going to loose. The floater is an abortion looking for somewhere to happen. Food in Oz is generally better than the UK, but pies and beer are blind spots.

Game on. In 15 years, I never had a decent pie in Oz. That's WA, btw. I'll happily concede that a specialist can do the trick, but I never found one in Perth. The only pies widely available in Perth (at your average deli) are generic Mrs Mac's dogshit slurry gravy pies. With tomato sauce.

I'm not trying to be contrary here, and not looking for a fight. Don't misunderstand me. I just never found a good pie in Perth. Soubriquette can turn out a magnificent Oishida pasty.

Mate the stuff at WA deli's and lunch bars are waxy pastry filled with gravy. You'd need a microscope to find the meat.

Ever seen a pork pie? Never in Oz.

An Oishida pastie is mince with onion carrot potato and peas. It's a dry mix that comes in flaky pastry. Delish thumbsup.gif

lol.gif Nah I liked what I ate of UK food Soub, in London Sheffield and Scotland. I also happen to like Mrs Macs slurry pies, but will admit that they are not the best out there. But what do you expect for a mass-produced widely distributed product. Back in the day the Dunsborough bakery down south made a mean meat pie! Dunno about now though. Soubs is just being a whingeing pom Mantas ;\)

i'm quite fussy with my pies because i don't like eating shite. in perth i can recomend a number of bakeries, there are some gems in various WA coastal towns too. there are also alot of shockers. a good pie is hard to find, and increasingly a good value pie is too. there's been a semi-gourmet pie revolution with some places charging up to $6AUS. that's outrageous, and anything more than $4-4.50 is pushing it in my book. walking out of a bakery with a quality pie and some sweet treat for a fiver is what i like.

as far as the uk goes, i spent 18 months in london, so that's hardly representative of the entire country. i never found a pie anywhere, and i was looking. pork pies don't tickle my fancy... all that fat made me feel sick

bushy, when whinging is made an olympic sport, I'll be a certainty for a medal, but I reckon there would be a cocky for gold.

I like pasties because I like a dry filling. When they are made properly you can also recognise whats in them, which I think is a plus. Traditionally they are made with short pastry, but I prefer flaky.

Any decent pies in Japan?

I made a decent one myself once, but it was a right pain to make. You need a special tool to mix the butter in to the flour or else the pastry goes wrong.
