Bonio 0
I was just wondering what the media coverage of bird flu is like in Japan and other places at the moment. In the UK it's constantly in the papers and there seems to be lots of scaremongering about it mutating into human to human transmissionable form and causing a global pandemic. Is anyone seriously worried about this? Hope it doesnt affect international travel, or at least not untill I'm in Japan. I wonder if it will have an affect on insurence for traveling to east asia. It hopefully won't come to anything and it's just the British tabloids not letting go of a story, but just wondered if this was being echoed anywhere else in the world. kkk 7
Quote: or at least not untill I'm in Japan. Good to see you're worried about a pandemic affecting tons of people. Weren't some birds with it found in eastern Europe recently causing the big fuss?
Bonio 0
That was kinda meant in jest, not very obvious though I admit Yeah, it seems to be moving west apparently due to migrating birds. They have confirmed cases of it jumping from bird to human in Turkey now, and apparently it's hit Romania as well.
Ocean11 0
> Is anyone seriously worried about this? Yes. It's far more of hazard than global terrorism, and not enough is being done to prepare for it. The more you find about flu pandemics from reliable sources, the more alarming it becomes. If it suddenly becomes human to human transmissible, it will affect international travel. People will be hemorrhaging from their noses on transatlantic flights and arriving dead at their destinations.
Ocean11 0
Article in the Independent about it. The 'Spanish Flu' of 1918 is thought to have started in the US and spread around the whole world from there, being misnamed in the process. The only communities that were not affected at all were those that threatened to shoot outsiders (including postmen) who came within shooting range. Isn't it interesting how at school you may have learned about the 'lost generation' of the 'Great War', but never heard a squeak about the flu pandemic that killed far more people... It's the same this time around, only this time it's the War on Terror that's going down in history.
Yuki's Passion 1
http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/national/news/20051031p2a00m0na009000c.html Bird flu suspected at Japanese farm Authorities have detected signs of bird flu at a farm in northern Japan and plan to kill 82,000 chickens, local officials said Monday. The farm in Ibaraki Prefecture, just northeast of Tokyo, was already inside a quarantined area because of past outbreaks, Kyodo News agency reported. Kyodo said 1.5 million birds had already been culled in the area because of bird flu fears. Authorities found signs of the disease in seven farms in the area at the end of August. In Monday's case, antibody tests showed the chickens may be infected with a virus from the H5 family, Ibaraki Prefectural Government officials said in a statement. Signs of the antibodies means the chickens were infected in the past but had survived. Japanese officials said the strain involved in the recent outbreaks is less virulent that the H5N1 variety that has ravaged poultry in Southeast Asia since 2003 and killed more than 60 people in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Bird flu hit Japan last year for the first time in decades, killing or prompting the extermination of hundreds of thousands of chickens. Japan also confirmed a human case of bird flu in December 2004, but no deaths have been reported. An outbreak in June forced the culling of about 94,000 birds at another farm outside Tokyo. It was caused by the H5N2 bird flu strain, a variety not known to infect humans. (AP) October 31, 2005 Anybody see the pics of the PETA girls protesting KFC's animal rights abuse?
