Monster Head Advice
jgraves replied to billings's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
10yrs of skiing doesn't mean anything if you've never skiied powder. You'll be struggling to adjust your style the first day or two no matter what skiis you're on. Fatter skiis will probably help you adjust quicker and have a lot more fun. -

True carving on a snowboard
jgraves replied to coldcat's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Ohh great poombah, please enlighten us with your tips on the easy carving and other carnal pleasures. A boarder friend of mine is sooooo close, but just can't seem to get it to click. If he gets it, he'd be so much more fun to ski with because he wouldn't get tired at 2:00pm and could ski more terrain with the rest of us. "Tipping is not a city in China." -
Helmet or Not to Helmet
jgraves replied to Fubuki's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
The poly inner shell of helmets is only designed to absorb one hit, and the helmet doesn't do squat to protect after that. If your $31 met has taken a hit, its not worth a yenny. And sometimes you can't tell visually if has or not. Given what you're going to be using it for, If it looks even remotely scratched when it arrives, I would just throw it out and get a brand new one. -
Helmet or Not to Helmet
jgraves replied to Fubuki's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
And so I won't be misunderstood about this (again). . . If you're riding park, you'd be a moron not to wear head protection. If you're racing or in the trees without a met, you're even stupider than the moron in the park. If you ski under control on groomers, your biggest danger is probably the out-of-control **** about to rear-end you. And a helmet is as likely to do harm in that situation as it is to do good. I have been blindsided twice--once the person broke my pole, the other time the person cracked my ski boot. The time my ski boot cracked, my neck was f'd for -

And I'm not in the mood for a philosophical debate about this. car seats have headrests to prevent your head from snapping backwards if you are rear-ended. If you are rear-ended on skiing or riding and you've got a -
Helmet or Not to Helmet
jgraves replied to Fubuki's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
There is in increased chance of neck injury with a helmet (especially with a cheap heavy one), despite the decreased chance of head injury. Head injuries are far more common of the two in skiing and boarding, but there's more than one way to become a nasu. Weigh the risks and rewards of a helmet based on what/how you ski or ride. The answer is usually going to be that a helmet is good for most people, but not always. -

I like my Giro9 also. There were others that fit just as well, but the 9 is one of the lightest I tried on. -
Helmet or Not to Helmet
jgraves replied to Fubuki's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Skier, yes or no Boarder, probably If you ski exclusively on groomers, don't see much point unless you're kamikaze, extremely accident prone, or worried about others running into you (which is a reasonable concern) It does add a bit of (perhaps false) confidence, that can make some people either more dangerous or better skier/boarders. Just know that once you ski/board with a helmet, its difficult to go back. Its really up to what and how you ski/ride. A heavy helmet isn't worth whatever you save over a better lighter one. -

Faaaaaaaaark! Woke up with a raging sore throat this morning. I'm dying to meet up with you all, but gotta bail on coming up this weekend after all. Unless an emergency meeting gets scheduled, it looks like I'm in for a 3-day wknd (fri-sun) next week . Will definitely be up then. -

Man, when you said shoronagashi, I was thinking those little origami ones and wondering why he had to push it. Great taste in cars. The two things I miss most about home are Pat's Cheese Steaks in Philly and my element. Enjoy your trip. -
snow hakuba
jgraves replied to Fattwins's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Depending on how this week shapes up snowwize, I might be heading up to Hakuba next weekend to stretch my legs on-piste before the real season starts. Any locals wanna meet up and try to convince me I should spend more time in Hakuba and less in Tohoku this season? -
Tree Wells?

I've always wondered what it would be like to see your first snowstorm after growing up in a place where it never snowed. I'm guessing from your 40+ day seasons that it must have been amazing. You should definitely try to convince the wife to do her satogaeri at oshogatsu rather than obon (and good luck with the boss). If you're a hummer-driving bi -

Tohoku Bumpkin has started getting feisty. Mom has been feeling him/her kicking for about two weeks, but dad finally got to feel the kicks for the first time last night! Truly amazing. Me Jane how are you doing? Care to share any pic's of the little 'un?

sleeping in the car
jgraves replied to tsondaboy's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Nice car Tsondaboy. Reminds me a lot of my Honda Element back home. Japanese car makers seem to be the only ones these days who make cars with fully flat floors in the back. And to add to subzero, a futon is just about the worst thing to use to separate your from the floor. It just becomes one big sponge. You may be alright for one night, but I would spend the 1000 yen on one of those blue foam mats with silver on one side.
