  1. ttuchin, the trees are where it's at... get in amongst them, they aren't as intimidating as you think (unless they're really tight and steep, then you could be in trouble). Thanks for the tip FT, I love the trees, and love having a lift pass too...
  2. Pics of ANY snow are music to my eyes at this stage. These photos bring a tear to my eye. 11 days till Hakuba for me!
  3. Half-joking... I'm not seriously suggesting that people shouldn't wear seatbelts, and you'll be happy to hear that I wear both seatbelt and helmet (but not at the same time). I was making an analogy, using the logic of not wearing a helmet while skiing, reasons like "I've never fallen on a rock/tree, "I'm always really careful", "I've never hit my head", "If I hit hard enough, even a helmet won't stop me getting seriously injured", "They look really gay", etc. If you apply the same logic to seatbelts "I've never been in an accident where the seatbelt saved me", "I'm always really careful", e
  4. We leave in less that two weeks, so we are trying to fine-tune our travel plans, so that everything goes as smoothly as possible. We need to get to Hakuba by the time the party at the White Horse starts...
  5. Music's OK in the park, but I prefer the sound of skis in snow on the rest of the mountain
  6. Thanks for articulating that so well, Thursday. They can all go get f****d, as far as I'm concerned. This guy lived not far from me, we shared a fantastic hobby/sport, and I will pay my respects in a way I see fit.
  7. My son can snowboard when he can afford to buy his own. He will ski until then.
  8. Helmet definitely wouldn't stop that. Aspirin, on the other hand... Given a choice between them, I'd still take the helmet, though.
  9. Off topic alert!!! If you go off piste, and don't wear a helmet, then don't bother wearing a seatbelt in the car, either. Sure they don't make you immortal, and they can be a pain in the arse, but they do increase your chances of surviving a major SNAFU.
  10. Can't we just pay our respects to a fellow skier/rider? Take it easy, oyuki, we are not trying to be disrespectful to all the poor unfortunates of the world who die for the wrong reasons, but we do feel a connection with this guy because he died doing something that all of us have done and not died. The masses who die daily in various wars, natural disasters, and under the yoke of oppressive governments all deserve our respect, but as Coldcat points out, THIS thread is about an Aussie who died skiing in Niseko, not about solving all the worlds woes. And playing the race card is pointless a
  11. Will be at the White Horse anyway, so may as well check it out Pub crawl might be to hard on our 7 month-old though...
  12. Thanks tsondaboy, that's a very helpful thread. Looks like Pieps is the go. I should probably try and keep an eye on the forums in the off-season too...
  13. Good, I've been looking at some on eBay and the prices vary a lot depending on brand. The hiccup with the batteries notwithstanding, is the Tracker DTS a good unit? It looks to be one of the more expensive ones around, so is there any advantage over the cheaper units?
  14. About that map... seems to have been misplaced. I'll keep my eye out for it (it might be in storage facility)
  15. This is a newby question for this forum, but does everyone in the ski party need the same brand of beacon, or are they all transmiting/recieving the same frequency?
  16. I picked it up from the patrol at La Ponte in Feb 2004, but the number of fatalities since then is probably small enough to not make a difference to the overall picture. I'll see if I can scan a copy and upload it to the site, as requested by Ger.
  17. Bushpig, just how close was the 10000th post on this thread to being your 5000th post?
