  1. lucked out w/ awesome weather, though we had two notorious ameotokos in the group. coyote, it gets windy up top, so i suggest you choose your campsite carefully. you're right about there being no water. it also almost always attracts clouds even on clear days in the afternoon. good luck sounds like fun
  2. no toque. yakushima is an island south of kyushu three hours by boat. it is the enchanted forest of japan. will check it out ian
  3. hmmm, go see a 7,000-year-old, 16.5 diameter tree, traversing western japan's tallest Mt., Miyanoura-dake or hitchhike across kyushu? we've got 3 and a half days. what is the aso hippie festival?
  4. Quote: Originally posted by Creek Boy: [QB] mate are you going to Aso for the hippy festival? i'm thinking about as an alternative to hiking 3 days across yakushima. so far, we have round trip flight booked to kagoshima. just have to put sealer on my tent and clean my stove.
  5. GW is sat 4/28 to sun 5/6, but a lot of places have monday and tues 5/1 & 2 as business days like toque said, hopefully it won't be so windy this year and snow will remain at the peaks. i want Ooyama direct underneath the shrine.
  6. i wanna go to tateyama but don't have any camping buddies yet... i'm free 4/27 to 5/1. going camping to kyushu 5/2-5/6.
  7. looked like a fun trip toque i never made it out for a hut trip when i lived close to the rockies
  8. am swamped w/ work, won't be up for at least two weeks. first pics of tateyama are up 620cm base now compared to 690 last year and 570 the year before
  9. well it's been two weeks, wts, and conditions in hakuba seem prime and calling for more snow. march is turning out better than february this year
  10. 14-ML-5751-ML- This thread has been moved to Trip Reports forum area.
  11. thanks again for the ride back to tokyo, stunt cok. funny conversations in the car. i'll never look at chapstick or a toothbrush the same way again. ridiculous day yesterday. when we split into pairs, stunt cok and i hit the trees. i had that chute dialed and just opened up in there. i think that was the latest i've skied until so far this year, 4:50. so much fun. kept trying to call u EBC; sorry bad reception.
  12. were u coming out at the trail head and the road? and if so, did u coordionate cars this time?
  13. were u coming out at the trail head and the road? and if so, did u coordionate cars this time?
  14. want to ski, you'll wants skins, not snowshoes if you're a skier Evergreen Outdoors in Hakuba and Canyons Adventures in Gunma are too places to start. mark your calender! kuma, you're on a b&w kick lately. what's up the the avie picture? it looks like color in the foreground (yellow) and b&w in the background (peaks). very ominous photo
  15. must be awesome to have a view like that out you hour door. sweet pic!
  16. i don't know the line you're thinking of, FT. serreche, that's the spirit. down coming tengu-hara, i also saw huge holes into water and thought of the two. pics, serreche? oops, mejane, the best decision of last week was in the other thread. i left hakuba early to surprise my g.f. at her accoustic show sat. night. fubuki and his g.f. were in town and they ended up coming, too. great show and for a good cause (ACE and Friednsdorf). ft, i hope that was ok about the rope. if not, let me know and i'll change it
  17. great pics toque; cool angle, thought that's prolly what you're bindings see most of the day any of the descent? give us porn!
  18. obession? i found myself thinking of how many 10 meters per minute i was ascending. silly thoughts. but actually good for future reference. i don't think anything of last june anymore. that's all in the past now. the snow Friday was excellent away from the crusty parts. fast fast snow. yes i need snowshoes with heel risers. went up halfway to tengu the next day w/ kumapix, sock monkey, and the BCW and a ripper climber. i had a bus to catch and the rest topped out norikura. how did she like the run boys?
  19. good hiking up saturday morning. when i left u guys @ the top of tengu-para, i flew down to the parking lot in 9 minutes. but i still missed the bus thanks for coming to cherry's show, fubuki. she was defintely surprised. how was sizzler? ya, let us know how the interview went!
  20. I took Friday off work to go hiking and it turned out to be the second best decision I made this week. 2 hours up 2451 meters above sea 15 minutes making snow pit 25 minutes down 1600 vertical skied A morning well spent I got to Hakuba and took the 500-yen bus ride to Tsugaike. Once off the lift above the gondola, I got out of my snowboard gear and into my snowshoes in 8 minutes. I'd like to get that down to 5. Maybe the December issue of Coulior that had arrived at my house last Monday was rubbing off on me, but I loved being up there by myself and going at my own pace.
  21. oooooooooooooooooook, maybe making a list is not such a good idea. while i was typing the last post, u had replied. the internet is a funny place
  22. ebc, maybe you could highlight the points u and AK had a long discussion about. if would consolidate what you've learned it could be useful for future reference for when you take an avi class. once you take the class or at least read some books, you'll pick up the vocabulary and the knowledge. so far from what you and AK have said and from this thread, there's: --people (not in your group) asking questions about off piste, not back country --cell phone signal (?) --southfacing slope on a warm day --late start --strong temperature gradients every 10 cms in the snowpack --not
  23. yes, owens is now the co-owner of CPG. a lot of businesses are selling, not just guides. tsaina lodge, featured in First Descent is also looking to sell.
