  3. A friend of mine has to work Saturday during weeks that have a national holiday, because "every week has 5 working days". So 2 weeks ago there was a national holiday on Friday. This resulted in having 2 seperate days off from work instead of a regular weekend. So what is the use of national holidays if you don't get more time off from work?
  4. I started a blog when I came to Japan, for the folks back home. It really is sort of a diary but I try to not write about the same subject twice. Now more and more people tend to find it and tell me it was a good read. Still I find it difficult to write something new without slipping into the "what was my shopping list today" or "once again that annoying person bothered me". So the new thread slowly decreased from everyday to once a week or even less. I guess it could work for your place Gamera.
  5. This morning when I switched on the tv it was on the BBC tcker tape: "snow arrives in Japan". I know it is important but that important? On the next run I saw that it was John Snow arrives in Japan, Bummer!
  6. Tignes, Val d'Isere, La Plagne, Chamonix, Les Arcs, Val Thorens, L2Alpes, Alpe dHuez, Crans-Montana, Verbier, Zermat, Saas-fee, Laax, Silvaplana, Engelberg, Kaunertal, Stubaital, Hintertux, Pitztal, Solden, Ober/Hoch Gurgl, Kaprun, Val Senales, Dachsteiner Gletscher, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Probably still forgetting a dozen or so. All have glaciers or are high enough that the snow usually will hold for the season once it hits the ground in december.
  7. Quote: How does early season prices compare and how early is the first decent snow of the year in Europe? [/QB] If you book a package then the 2 weeks before christmas can be ridiculously cheap, but there might not be a drop of snow if you are unlucky. So pick a place with a glacier.
  8. Wow already planning for 07! 06 hasn't even started yet. More than enough time to do a small search on the database.
  9. Saas-fee is usually a good bet with a fair park in the pre-season.
  10. Yes, a few years ago. I forgot all about it but found it again last night when I was going through my photofiles. Somewhere along the way to Attapu in Laos. The shirt is a miss-print it actually says something like "fresh powier".
  11. Some people can't stop thinking about skiing powder, whether it is Japan or in southern Laos.
  12. Ok, it is not that easy. You have to find the right combination of buttons and then a whole new world will open
  13. The other day my 8 months old little girl got het hands on my laptop and was able to crash "Word" within 2 minutes. Maybe monkey proof, but not baby proof.
  14. It is not that the operations in Russia do crazy things but they are more focused to more radical skiing, where CMH are more for the 40plus powder8 crowd, at least that is what I heard. So instead of having to come back a few times before they let you do the steeper stuff, thye step it up a bit further in the next run.
  15. Places you want to consider: - Tignes - Val Thorens, not Les Menuires - Le Corbier - Superdevoluy - Flaine - Vars All resorts mentioned are bigger than L2Alpes and cater better for a mixed ability group. The first 2 are wellknown and probalby more expensive. I really enjoyed Flaine last time I was there.
  16. L2Alpes is still not really big for French standards. It is only 1 mountain but with 2000m vert. It has about 150km of slopes that says something. The best things of L2Alpes is the possibility to ski in La Grave. The terrain of L2Alpes is ok but not great. There are more or less 3 miniresorts connected by a sometimes very flat road. If you are a snowboarder you probably have to walk now and then to get back home. Worst thing of L2Alpes is the descent into the village. This is either a road or a mogul run. So if you are a novice skier/boarder this isnot much fun. The apresski is one of
  17. Actually where do you go to? Like O11 said "the place is so damn huge". Is the trip going to the caucasus, kamtchadka or one of the former USSR replublics like Kazachstan? A friend of mine did a trip to the caucasus 2 years ago and 2 years before that he did some heliskiing in Canada too. His said that heliskiing in the caucasus was cheaper and much more 'cowboy' like. They did lots of steeps and other stuff that they wouldn't do in North America because of liability insurance. The heli was quicker so he was able to do more vert in Russia, but security was still highly regarded by very ex
  18. I will sell my Atomic Powder Cruise 190 in Feb. They are still brand new (I took them several times to the snow but they were never unleashed). Next summer I will leave Japan and I can't be bothered to take them to some new place where they will catch a lot of dust. I just want to ski them 1 day. They are probably not wide enough for you though.
