  1. speaking of weird food, we went to a gnarly market in north sulawesi the other day. those minahasans will eat anything. clubbing dogs to death then blow torching the fur off them, rats, bats, snakes... i was trying to get some shots of the butchers hacking up animals. after blood sprayed all over i just gave up and got outta there
  2. Nup. Sorry. I can't bring myself to eat it.
  3. So what are some of the more memorable and ridiculous ideas that never got taken up?
  4. Is that because people are drinking less these days - hence, more food in order to turn a profit. It's more a cultural shift maybe? I'm not English so maybe my tastes are different, but everytime I've been there I really like Brighton. There's drinking pubs, fancy pubs, food pubs, cheesy pubs, old men pubs (my favourite - lots of local beers and ciders and some personality to the place). Lots of pubs. Can you smoke in pubs still?
  5. Ah. OK. But wasn't everyone talking before about how good country pubs are? I always thought country pubs were known for serving food. I'm not stirring, I just didn't geddit. Surely if there is still demand for pub-style pubs in the city some will remain? I'm a big fan of the English pub. I don't dig the sports bars in the US, and in OZ all the poker machines are terrible.

  7. Well hello SJers Thought I'd chuck up some pics from a recent 5 week trip through the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. We weren't really sure why we wanted to go there. Mostly we noticed the island's odd shape, then we heard there was some cool stuff to check out. Kicking off in the south we headed up into the misty hills of Tana Toraja. Volcanoes, rice paddies and boat shaped houses are hemmed in by mountains. When the rain stopped the scenery was out of this world. Throw in a buffalo cult and some elaborate death rituals - cave graves, wooden effigies and coffins hanging fr
  8. sounds hectic. speaking off which, we just rolled into jakarta after a month or so in sulawesi. the traffic here always blows me away. heading down the coast next for (hopefully) a few days of waves with a mate. gonna check out the turtles area. i've got no idea of what to expect - just gonna be a passenger and leave it in his capable hands
  9. backcountry wise, search for the myoko backcountry ski school.
  10. i have no real idea what's in sulawesi. we just thought it looked like a fun place to check out. the funeral festivals in tana toraja look interesting, and the snorkeling is supposedly world class in the north. it's just gonna be a holiday and the chance to do something different. pretty soon i'm going to have to go back to the real world and there'll be less opportunities to do impulsive trips like this one. plus if i'm not getting a lot of time off, most trips will be to hunt waves or snow, so it seems like a good time to do something different. what was your wife doing in ujung pand
  11. yes, but so is padang. at least you can buy different stuff in this city.... to be honest we're just staying at a mate's house and it's a little sanctury. we're not doing much. heading to sulawesi on the weekend. woop woop! cold back in oz mantas?
  12. the guys on the shoulder of that wave could see right through the barrel and onto the left... that don't happen too often fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, i'm so hungover right now. had a boozy night out in jakarta with some old friends. bleuuuuuurgh. that's how i feel
  13. i still can't get over that shot of the beachie peak. imagine backdooring that thing.... i'm starting to drool over the keyboard
  14. niiiiiiiice! those beachies look like fun. and the quality left - is that the one they refer to as similar to pipe?
  15. I keep my fins sharp to deal with drop-ins... that is a brutal fin chop eh? what board you get indo?
  16. yes, well, the email may be bogus but i still like this line: Love like you've never been hurt
  17. whaaaaaat?! that's a beachbreak! i want i want i want. awesome. we're in jakarta at the moment. spent a few days in the jungle in siberut after leaving the island. that was very basic, very rough and very humbling. stayed with mentawai people from another age. they're so completely in tune with their environment you can't help but feel awed. but that's another story, and i don't wanna hijack your thread... i'll definitely hit you up for some more info later. how was the crowd situation in krui, and how much driving did you have to do?
  18. awesome shots mantas. looks like you had a great trip. love that shot of the canoe from above. where'd you stay in krui? and this peak looks mental - is it a real wave or just a nice shot?
  19. Sick Mantas - what waves did you surf? Surf has been pumping up here for the past few weeks. We actually leave in a couple of days. Pretty sad to move on, but excited about doing something new too
  20. Ahh, that blows about the leg infection. Just nail some hardcore antibiotics and get back out there... I'm actually pretty devo'd about my board. I really liked that one. Thought it'd be hanging on the wall in years to come and I could reminisce about Indo.... ha!
  21. Ahhhh, bugger it. Just broke my favourite board this morning. I loved that 6'3". Pulled into a solid one. 4ft plus. The tube collapsed on me, I didn't get that worked... and I now have a 3'1" and a 3'2". Awesome. It was a long time coming, but I'm surprised it snapped. The wipeout didn't feel too heavy. Oh well. Gonna dig a beaten up old board from under the house for the last few weeks up here.
  22. And yet I still don't make a lot of waves that I probably should...
  23. How do I go 3 season without being trashed on the reef? I don't! Last year got bounced really hard at a fast shallow right. Lost a heap of bark and could barely walk for a week. A few months later, I copped a board in the head and almost lost an eye... This year I've been lucky so far. Just a few scrapes and bumps. Nothing too serious. I guess cos I'm up here for a long stint I get selective about conditions and waves. I like big waves, but on usually only on the right winds and tides. Often you'll see guys surfing waves that aren't quite right because this may be their only chance to surf
