Controversial views on Japan here......
Matt replied to dane's topic in General off-topic discussions
Why the hell is the speed limit so ridiculously low on normal roads. I got a months suspension + huge fine recently for doing 89kmh in a 50 zone. In Britain the same road would have a limit of 96kmh. This country really pisses me off sometimes. -
Hakuba Cortina Kokusai

I went there yesterday. Had a whole afternoon of beautiful knee deep, long runs through the trees. Surprised at how good the place actually was. It compares favourably with 47/goryu and its really easy to keep away from the patrols there unlike at 47 where they hound you. -
Heli Skiing

They have heliskiing at Sugadaira too. I haven't done it myself but I think they drop you at the top of Neko-dake. I climbed that mountain in summer and its pretty flat so not sure if its worth it or not -

Any REPORTS from the slopes yet at all?
Matt replied to ii's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Went up to Shiga kogen on sunday. Yakebitayama has two slopes open as does Ichinose and higashitateyama. We weren't expecting much being our first day of the season but we had a great day. The snow was soft and powdery with only a few icy man-made snow patches showing through. we even did a bit of off-piste at Ichinose. Theres about 20-40cm of real snow around which is lying on 50cm of man-made snow on piste. Should be good next weekend if it keeps snowing.. -

When the boat comes in
Matt replied to a topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I heard a rumour theres a ferry from Naotsu to Iwanai as well as Muroran. Iwanai is the town next to Kutchan and Niseko so this would be a lot more convenient than the Muroran ferry. Does anyone know the score with this route? -

best boot shop in Kanda (or tokyo)??
Matt replied to danz's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Just walk 10 minutes south from Ochanomizu or shin-ochanomizu and theres a street which is just wall to wall snowboard stores. I was blown away the first time I went there. Minami and Victoria are great stores but you can usually get a slightly better deal at the smaller stores just off the main street if you shop around. -
