I'm almost as excited about visiting Kyoto as I am about 2 weeks in Nozawa Onsen, Happo One and Shiga Kogen. It looks so stunning and everyone loves it. -

Definitely much better at Suginohara during the week with no crowds. -
We went by bus from Nagano last year and it was really easy, from what I've heard much less hassle than the train & bus alternative. Hope this helps.
