If the weather is good I would consider Tenjindaira in Minakami. Every time I go there on a sunny day I am blown away by the views. You can get to Minakami station at 8:49 if you leave Utsunomiya at 5:16. This is not by Shinkansen and is 2,940 yen. From there you would have to take a bus. If you leave at 4:42 by Shinkansen you can get to Doai station, which is very close to the resort, at 8:33. This trip is 6,390 yen. A full day ticket is 3,500 yen and a half day (from 12) is 2,500 yen. http://www.snowjapanforums.com/index.php/topic/19986-tanigawa-tenjindaira-gunma-16th-february-2011/

Eiichigo red. I love amber ales and it is a good one. Their organic beer is also really good. Infact I like almost everything they make. Man in Japan mentioned why I say "almost", their new chocolate beer is barley drinkable for me.

My one concern is that it might not be the most begginer friendly resort, but there is one good

Guess Where This Is
Gunma Boarder replied to hellyer's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
It is in fact Kagura. I was about to get on here and name all the mountains in the picture as a hint, but you got it first. It is above the highest chair at Kagura that opens in late March. The view is amazing. I could see the North Alps, Mt. Myoko as well as many of the other major Niigata peaks. Anyway, it's all yours Bag of Crisps -

Not Akakura. A little hint. This picture was taken above a skijo on a ridgeline which is hiked by many snowshoers and backcountry enthusiasts. -

Three for Nozawa is pretty convincing. Thank you for the input -
I want to take a little vacation this winter break and do some boarding at someplace outside of my usual Gunma and Yuzawa resorts. My wife and baby will also be coming along, so I would like to stay somewhere that is an onsen town as well as interesting enough for someone to not be bored all day waiting for their husband to come off the mountain. The first two places that came to mind for me were Mt. Myoko and Shiga Kogen, but I am open to suggestions as long as the place isn't too far maybe Niigata, Nagano, Gifu, Fukushima, Miyagi or Yamanashi. Any imput would be appreciated. Are there onsen
