General information on getting to Shiga Kogen by road
The ski areas of Shiga Kogen are all accessed by car using Route 292. This main road connects central Nakano City with Gunma Prefecture and runs through the Shiga Kogen region.
Route 292 and Shiga Kogen are both well-signposted in English from the lower valley areas of Nakano and Yamanouchi.
From Shinshu Nakano IC to Shiga Kogen:
At the traffic lights of the Shinshu Nakano IC exit on the Joshinetsu Expressway, go straight ahead on the Shiga Nakano Road. The road used to be a toll road, but it has been free to use since March 2025.
Continue straight on this road as it changes to Route 292. About 7km from the IC, the road splits. Be sure to keep in the right-side lane to remain on Route 292. The road then heads all the way up to Shiga Kogen, passing close by the popular Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Snow Monkey Park) on the way.
On the way up to Shiga Kogen, the road is wide and winding, and it doubles back on itself several times. On a clear day with dry roads, it is an easy journey. Still, it can be much slower in mid-winter, in snowy and icy conditions.
The first ski area you arrive at in Shiga Kogen is Sun Valley, about 23km from Shinshu Nakano IC.
After arriving at the Hasuike junction, turn left onto Prefecture Road 471 and continue for about 4.5km. Takamagahara Mammoth is on the right hand side of the road.
Important
During the winter season, usually from late November until late April, the section of Route 292 between the Yokoteyama area of Shiga Kogen and Gunma Prefecture is closed. As such, the only way to access Shiga Kogen by road for most of the winter is Route 292 from the west (as described above). At other times of the year, it is possible to approach Shiga Kogen from Gunma Prefecture using Route 292.
Parking
There are a number of parking areas close to the base of Takamagahara Mammoth with capacity for around 200 vehicles. Parking is free on every day of the season.
