  • Myoko Now: Monday 1st February 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 417cm Posted on Monday 1st February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The trees are covered in a nice, light coating of snow this morning. Not a huge amount of fresh, perhaps 10cm or a little more at the base of Akakan, but a welcome addition and snow continues to fall. It's the same small flakes that we've seen almost exclusively this year. We miss seeing those great big, vision-obscuring flakes falling hard and fast. Could still happen, since we're just now into February. It's light, but it keeps on falling, and snow is on the forecast for all days except Thursday and then there is the chance of heavy snow on Friday. So it may not be a lot all at once, but it looks like we will get some additional snow added to the pack. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early-morning departure this morning, and only Akakura Onsen has made its report for the day, but it feels like the calm before the storm today. Or at least we hope! The skies are dark, light snow is falling, and it just has that feel that a good snowfall is on the way. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I've decided to be more positive (a few days off skiing can improve your spirits!). Again, only Akakura Onsen is new today; other temperatures should be more in line with -1° it is reporting. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 16th February 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 579cm Posted on Tuesday 16th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A good day and night of snow - real Myoko-style, hard-to-drive snow. It's hard to tell the total snowfall, as there was a lot of wind and drifting through the day (the cars in our drive were buried on the south/lee side, not covered on the north/windward side. Looking at quiet/level spots, the total was probably 50cm, although when it was really coming down it seemed like there would be more. On a drive up to Seki Onsen yesterday afternoon it was almost impossible to see at times, and there were a couple of cars unable to make the climb up the hill (get those chains on early, cityfolk!). The snow is nice and soft, too. I can always tell when the snowblower cuts through the big drifts without struggling, and everything gets totally obscured by light blowing flakes. OK, it's not as scientific as when I was doing a regular snow study plot outside, but it works! Tomorrow looks good as well, with the potential for another good heavy fall. Light snow is forecast for today as well, although at the moment it's clear over the mountains, with dark clouds off to the north over the ocean. Hope to have more good news for you tomorrow! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 649cm Posted on Thursday 18th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A good day of snow, followed by a cloudless sky... Like to see more continuous days of snow, but we got a pretty good addition to the snowpack. Looks like a meter around the house, but that's more due to the drifts caused by high winds blowing the snow in from the north. If we average it out, we're looking at about 50cm of fresh, which is not bad and certainly welcome. And it is really blue, cloudless and probably going to get warmer through the day. The winds do raise the possibility of wind loading higher up; there's still way too many small trees and brush out there, which might help anchor things, but where we do have open steep lee slopes there's always some concern that things could slide. That's especially true as we get some energy into the snowpack from the sun. Just be a bit careful until things settle down. But it's a nice day to ski some powder, so get out there! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday's warming is over; we got some rain from the late afternoon into the night, even pretty heavy around 7, but the moon came out around 10 and the rain stopped. Light snow has been falling this morning, although it's stopped at the moment. Things look like they could change, though; the Coast Guard info shows some very strong winds offshore coming in from the northwest and west. I was just about to write that that could bring some good things, and sure enough the snow has suddenly really picked up here (yea!). It's looking good, so I hope we'll have a snow report with lots of snow in it tomorrow. Just keep an eye on the wind today, as the gondolas and some of the top lifts sometimes stop in high wind. All OK at the moment, though. We need the snow; look at the decline in snowpack at the resorts. Actually saw some grass poking up on the runs yesterday.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A real Myoko day: 50+cm of fresh, an evening of snow so thick it looks like fog; and that fantastic feeling under the boots, with soft snow up to the ankles. And it continues to snow this morning, although the sun keeps trying to make an appearance. We've also had a few moments of major gusts and blinding snow, although things are pretty calm at the moment. Should be an excellent day for skiing! A quick test of snow quality (thanks to the snowthrower - don't scoff; it really does give me a good chance to sort of test out the snow density and flake types) says things could be a bit heavy offpiste. Should be fine with steeper slopes (although sluffs are possible - go one by one!), but it could be a bit of a grind on more gentle terrain. Downhill trail busting, anyone? The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's back: the snow started falling this morning, and it's going hard at the moment. About 20cm has fallen so far, and it keeps coming down. Why it took so long to get Myoko-like, we don't know, but we don't - as long as we get more on the ground we're happy, in this crazy year of nothing expected. It is pretty heavy snow, it has to be said. The resort reports are in the minus, but it's pretty mild. That's not entirely bad, of course; some heavy snow might improve things in the backcountry, and weigh down those trees that are still sticking up. Hope to have a bigger figure for the total snowfall by tomorrow. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 23rd February 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 656cm Posted on Tuesday 23rd February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun's out again - this is getting a bit repetitive this year! A little snow, then a day of sun. Nothing anything to improve the snowpack, as today's figures show. Even Seki Onsen has started to bring the figures down (although, the 300cm figure still shows that little resort's eternal optimism. Love you guys). I'm also sad to see the potential heavier snow toward the end of the week has once again diminished to "snow showers" and "light snow," terms I have come to hate. Mostly because this year, light snow really means little light crystals that hardly amount to anything, where in most years we'd have light fall of typical big flakes, and maybe 10cm. THAT is light snow. OK, I'm getting pessimistic and gloomy again, and it is, after all a nice sunny day, and we're in one of the lovely places of the earth, right? Looking out my window, I also realize that the brush has indeed slowly gotten pushed down a bit by the creeping snow, so it might be fun to get out on snowshoes or light touring skis, even if most of the backcountry still is pretty hard to get through in sections. it just doesn't look like late February.... Oh, but I am adding some snow from yesterday; there was more than 1cm, especially a little bit to the north, and a bit more added on. Just to keep us honest, truthful and accurate. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Unbelievable: Myoko-style snow has returned. The weather report got me with that "snow showers" stuff, but we have 41cm (where I measured in a non-wind-blown spot) and solid snowfall continuing. One time I'm glad the forecasts didn't get it right. Pretty strong winds through the night have left some drifts; could be some wind loading higher up the mountain, so do be a little cautious if you're skiing up high. Otherwise, I'm just sitting here watch it come down at a rate of about a centimeter per hour; just hopes it keeps on going throughout the day. And also watching the areas report an increase in snowpack; always something we like to see. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A quick report, as I'm out in town today... pretty gray out there, with fog and some very light snow coming down from time to time. VERY light, as in just a dusting on the trees. The wind offshore has swung around to the north/northeast, which doesn't really result in much snow - if it comes more from the west we'd have uplift over the mountains, and probably more snowfall here. At least snow is on the menu for the coming days with only a little bit of clear predicted, and even the possibility of heavy snow later in the week. Personally I'd like to see it; it was pretty icy on the slopes yesterday. Powder over chatter, please. • Myoko Now: Wednesday 2nd March 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 803cm Posted on Wednesday 2nd March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun is out, mostly, this morning with a few flakes drifting down from time to time. Nice snow up higher yesterday, although it was pretty heavy lower (but good skiing onpiste). It's staying cold today; that rise in the freezing line is going to start on Friday, so get out before then (also Saturday, before Sunday's rain, could be a nice spring day). Speaking of spring, I have some local knowledge to share. My newspaper guy/snowthrower repairman/hotel owner came by to change the fan belt on the snowthrower and gave the common knowledge on potential snowfall for the rest of the month/season. The first early fall of March can be a big one, but we probably can't expect much more. The exceptions, says folk knowledge, is White Day (March 14) and one more day that I thought he said was Newspaper Day, but that could only be Sports Newspaper Day (March 6 - not likely). That actually links up pretty well with other predictions that the snow is going to be disappearing early this year. So I says, go out and get it while you can. It's nice out today, with snowy trees and nice white cover everywhere. With rain and wind, the snow figures could go down fast. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 1st March 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 793cm Posted on Tuesday 1st March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A great start to March, with 60cm of snow on the ground (hard to tell, really, as there was a lot of wind involved through the night). Sorry not to post earlier, but the snow also meant I got called out to play with the heavy metal (I love little bulldozers), especially since I still need to change a fan belt on the snow thrower - which is really more convenient, but it's nice to sit and work in a warm cab). The snow continues to fall, and it's nice and cold. Really feels like winter in Myoko. Late though it may be, it's still welcome. Time to enjoy it, because once again we'll see the freezing line rise up on the weekend to 2000 meters or more. We keep seeing this in the 2016 season, and I hope we won't in 2017. The word from the mountain is good, light snow up high. With all that wind - we had cornices and windloading around the house - be careful on lee slopes up there. If you don't know what I mean, time to do a little study before you go out!
