Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 53cm
Snowfall at base this season 524cm

Posted on Wednesday 10th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

A real Myoko day: 50+cm of fresh, an evening of snow so thick it looks like fog; and that fantastic feeling under the boots, with soft snow up to the ankles.

And it continues to snow this morning, although the sun keeps trying to make an appearance. We've also had a few moments of major gusts and blinding snow, although things are pretty calm at the moment. Should be an excellent day for skiing!

A quick test of snow quality (thanks to the snowthrower - don't scoff; it really does give me a good chance to sort of test out the snow density and flake types) says things could be a bit heavy offpiste. Should be fine with steeper slopes (although sluffs are possible - go one by one!), but it could be a bit of a grind on more gentle terrain. Downhill trail busting, anyone?
