Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 20cm
Snowfall at base this season 599cm

Posted on Wednesday 17th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

It's back: the snow started falling this morning, and it's going hard at the moment. About 20cm has fallen so far, and it keeps coming down. Why it took so long to get Myoko-like, we don't know, but we don't - as long as we get more on the ground we're happy, in this crazy year of nothing expected.

It is pretty heavy snow, it has to be said.

The resort reports are in the minus, but it's pretty mild. That's not entirely bad, of course; some heavy snow might improve things in the backcountry, and weigh down those trees that are still sticking up.

Hope to have a bigger figure for the total snowfall by tomorrow.
