The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice snowfall through the day yesterday, all the way down to the ocean. We probably got 30cm or so at the base of Akakan, and it really looks nice to see things in white again. This also gives the ski areas a little breathing room, as things were getting pretty thin on the hills. More snow is forecast for the rest of the day and on in through the weekend. Sorry to see the heavy snow previously forecast for the weekend being revised to moderate snow or snow showers, but let's just wait and see. These things do change a lot up in the mountains, right? And we're a lot more optimistic after this last snow. We may not have typical, massive snow in Myoko this year, but I think we're ahead of the pack: the parking lot at Akakura Kanko Ski Area was completely full by 9:30 yesterday, with lots of out-of-town license plates on the cars. Today though I doubt it will be that crowded, as we're socked out in a heavy fog with a pretty heavy north wind. Too bad, really, as there is some new snow out there to make things a little more soft and enjoyable. I will end on that positive note, because I know a lot of people are going to look out and see the gray and be less enthusiastic (but, remember, you can't ski on blue skies!). It's an early morning today, so the report goes out with only two resorts having submitted their info for the day (thank you, Ikenotaira and Akakura Onsen!). A little bit of good news: maybe three cm of fresh snow this morning (the less good is that things seem pretty bright out there, with sun likely). But things are looking a little better over the coming days and into the weekend, with snow on the forecast pretty much every day, even if not all heavy. And it's a bit colder, too. We're not going to dwell on it, but look ahead! It can only get better at this point. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Finally: a Myoko-style snowfall, with reduced visibility, and covered-up car windows. It's not much yet, really, by local standards, but man it looks good. I'm not even going to write that much; I wanted to get the report out, so you (and maybe me) can get out into that good soft snow! More snow is forecast for the coming days, even perhaps some heavy stuff over the weekend, so things are looking better. Doesn't have to be a record snow year to have some good skiing (just nice to not be bouncing off grass and rocks). Probably 15cm now, and counting. The result was another 10-20 cm on the ground this morning. Yeah! It's looking more and more like the Myoko we know and love - although do note that it is still really low out in the backcountry! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm waiting for the official report here; 9:30 and it still isn't out which is terrible on a completely bizarre weather day like today. Luckily the Akakura Kanko sends out its own report, so I can tell you that only the No. 1 and 2 lifts are running. Everything else is closed due to the crazy strong winds coming in from the west at base level. Also weird because the Coast Guard report shows winds offshore coming in strong from the east, which would make sense with the massive cycle bringing snow to the Pacific side. Right here, now, at this moment, the word in Myoko is driving rain - but don't panic, as the freezing line should come down later today from nearly 1500 meters to sea level. This means much colder temperatures, and very possibly some good snow (but I hate to even risk jinxing it by saying anything). I'll try and get as much information as I can from all the different area websites - a bit of a pain, to be honest, but part of that outstanding SnowJapan service (I'm not being sarcastic; we take this seriously!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun is gone, the clouds are back, and so is more of the very pretty, but very light, snow. The good news is that snow is forecast almost continuously for the next week, with the possibility of heavier fall around Monday (although I also see possible rain just before that). Offshore the wind has shifted to come in from the north; that's usually good news on the snow front as well. It's pretty strong out there on the water, but really quiet here at the base of the mountain. Really happy to see all the resorts have fresh news in today; maybe not having a lot of good news has held them back from reporting (and, to be honest, only the temperatures are changing - let's call the snow depths a "general advisory"). And one more good thing; in the few minutes I've been writing the snowfall has picked up a lot. Still not the level we could normally expect, but still snow, still falling, and looks like we could get some new accumulation. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some nice light snow overnight. Once again, not a huge, Myoko-typical dump, but still a welcome addition to a slowly but steadily increasing snowpack. It's still a little light for getting out into the backcountry, but the bush is slowly disappearing. Just remember that you probably won't be doing massive powder turns anytime soon, but it is nice out there. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It seems like heavy snow is falling everywhere except Myoko. I suspect people here think we're getting some good snow, but the reality is that snow is falling but we're getting very little accumulation. That doesn't mean it won't get better, though! The forecast still holds out a lot of promise, and we're grabbing on to it. Could be heavy tomorrow, they say? Alright, we says. We have lots of hope. Enough gloom. Skiing is possible (but it will be terrible offpiste today, sorry. Low snow, lots of brush, and ice crust to boot). The wind has shifted to the west off the coast, and it is really screaming in (19m/s, or 68 kph), which is a good sign. That wind hitting the front range (us) can mean some good snowfall. Oh, and the lifts are all running which is much better than yesterday morning's rain, high winds and few operating lifts. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow is falling very lightly now on a mild day in Myoko. Looks nice for the rest of the week up until the weekend, then some very weird things look likely. The local news has already warned people that their pickled goods (lots of people make tsukemono, Japanese-style picked daikon and other vegetables) are under threat from high temperatures. And the official weather reports also see the freezing line going almost to the top of Mt. Myoko on Saturday and Sunday, with some screaming winds possible as well... Let's hope this one gets less severe as we get closer - it does happen in the mountains! Weather is never completely a fixed thing up here. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 288cm Posted on Wednesday 20th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm going to get this out early (well, I wanted to be even earlier, but I wanted at least one or two resorts to report in before getting this out). The morning began with some very bright lightning and echoing thunder—good signs for snow—and, sure enough, some graupel (soft hail) did fall right after that. Not a whole lot of accumulation yet, probably 20cm (hard to tell with drifting). I just finished the snow blowing, and suddenly the screaming wind is back, as is another blast of fairly heavy snow, this time, again, the round pellets of graupel. Hopefully this will turn to some nicer flakes to slide on, which is often the case. Akakura Kanko has sent out its report for the morning, which says all lifts are running, but with this kind of wind it's very likely that area gondolas and higher lifts may well shut down. The wind is coming in very strong from the north and northwest on the ocean and along the coast. I have a feeling that, if it shifts a little more west so the wind comes not off the plains to the north but directly over Mt. Myoko and the other frontline peaks, we'll see more snow. And it looks likely; the local forecast is saying upwards of 80cm through to tomorrow. Which would be a great thing right now, even if the storm slows things down a bit today. No change in the reports; it is colder than yesterday (-4°C on the trusty car thermometer this morning), but I doubt snow levels will have changed much; Akakura Kanko did not add any to yesterday's total. There will be pretty good wind chill if you are on the hill, so cover those noses and ears! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All that thunder and lightning and wind paid off, as we got a pretty good snowfall overnight. No where near the 80cm the news channels were saying was likely, but at least we're seeing ski areas finally (apart from always-increasing Seki) raising there snowfall totals. That's especially good news for the resorts on the south side, which had much lower levels than the Akakuras and Seki. Light snow continues to fall, although it's not adding that much to the 30cm or so we had here at the base level. Looking very positive for Saturday and Sunday, though. A lot of graupel (soft hail) fell, especially high up, and the grains were pretty big. If we do get more heavy snow on top of that level, be careful until it's clear that the round stuff has bonded well with the rest of the snowpack. It's the first time this season I get to say be careful about potential avalanche danger! But, with those high winds, too, it's a good time to be a little cautious on lee slopes and most steep slopes if more snow does fall. And at Akakura Kanko, the snow meant that the town-run Yuki Saka Ba, an igloo bar featuring Myoko's three saké brands, finally opens tomorrow night after being postponed since the beginning of the month.
