Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 363cm Posted on Thursday 23rd January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After all that talk of numbers yesterday, get a load of this. Snowfall reported by the resort since yesterday morning, after the snowfall we had yesterday during the day time and overnight. Yamabiko - 34cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 45cm Nagasaka - 40cm Karasawa - 35cm Yamabiko snow depth is also back up to 3m this morning. Yes, it has been a Nozawa-like snowy 24 hours here. A bit of a surprise at just how much we have got, but a good surprise. It is continuing to snow as well, so let's get some more out of it. The forecast does tell us to expect the snow clouds to ease off though during the day, to be followed by a clear and sunny day tomorrow. As I mentioned before temps are set to creep up a bit from tomorrow for a few days and we still might get some rain late Saturday though hopefully that will be kept to a minimum and it will be snowing where it really matters - on the slopes. We'll see. For now though should be fantastic conditions this morning and then that possibly bluebird tomorrow. Nice! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 12cm of new snow is being reported from the top Yamabiko area of Nozawa Onsen this morning and a cold -6 degrees as of 8am. Snow down to the village as well and it is still snowing this morning with snow forecast now for the day and through until Monday. So hopefully we could be on for a good dump of snow and more of the resort will very soon be able to open. For the moment operations are unchanged this morning. • Nozawa Now: Wednesday 22nd January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 333cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a few cm of snowfall yesterday, overnight we have 10cm at base, lower runs, and Yamabiko while 20cm of fresh is being reported by the resort on Uenotaira. I'll be heading up there soon! Relatively mild overnight in Nozawa after a very mild afternoon with temperatures creeping up into positive territory., with a low of -3C in the village but it's forecast to stay around that for the day. Tomorrow should be a mix of cloud with snow showers, while we are still expecting milder temps on Friday and Saturday. A few people have been asking about the snow depth numbers published by the resort and how they compare with last year. (That's basically what they are... published by the resort. Unfortunately I can't go out with a big stick every morning to take those readings). Anyway, here are the numbers from the same day in January last season: Yamabiko - 310cm Uenotaira - 270cm Hikage - 190cm Nagasaka - 180cm Karasawa - 150cm So you'll see that they were all a bit higher this time last year, though not hugely different. Yamabiko this year is actually on more than it was in January 2012, when the number was 270cm. The general consensus (of honest folk!) though is that we do have less snow at the moment than last year. Still, once you got a few m up there, an extra 20-30cm doesn't make all that difference does it? Of course, that amount falling fresh daily would be ideal. We still have a long long way to go in the season, so it still could end up being a bumper one in terms of numbers. We will just have to see what Mother Nature decides to deliver. I say get out there and enjoy it! • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 21st January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 323cm Posted on Tuesday 21st January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yes, yesterday was a very fine day after that very decent amount of snowfall. Snow clouds moved back in though and this morning there's some new cm to report from just a few at base to 10cm on the top Yamabiko runs. It wasn't as cold overnight and actually now the temperature is just under 0C though it should stay around there for the day and tomorrow should be cooler. It's snowing very lightly here as I write this and a look at the cams shows very poor visibility up on the mountain - perhaps snowing more heavily up there. Unconfirmed! Thick fog seems to be covering the top half. It should be snowing on and off, hopefully more on than off, for the day and also tomorrow. One thing that we have lacked this season is consistent full-on conditions... like what we had the other day, but regularly and continuing for days. We could do with some of that. But anyway. Yes, later on in the week a warm spell is forecast. Sunny and warmer on Friday and there's even a chance of some rain in the village at the weekend but fingers crossed even if we get that it won't last long and turn into snow. Let's forget about that until later in the week! For now, conditions should still be really good again today. Just know the layout and where you're going because visibility is very limited up there. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 31cm Snowfall at base this season 321cm Posted on Monday 20th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good old heavy dump of Nozawa snow is always wonderful to witness and the last 48 hours or so has really delivered. Heavy snow yesterday following on from the overnight snow with 20-35cm of additional snowfall being reported by the skijo across the mountain. Just totting up the numbers... Yamabiko - 88cm Uenotaira - 63cm Hikage - 66cm Nagasaka - 56cm Karasawa - 50cm Including the few cm or so overnight, that's 85cm in 2 days for the top runs as reported by the resort. :) It's always great to get a decent amount down at village level as well, it really adds to the excitement. Some of the weekend crowds may not have appreciated the snow conditions, but this morning will surely be one for everyone. We have clearer skies this morning, the sun is already starting up and it looks like it will be a fine day. Sorry, make that an awesome day. And regular readers will know that SnowJapan doesn't like hyperbole in it's reports --- I just reckon that today should be one of the days of the season. What's more, snow is on the way again by the end of the day and I should be reporting more in my next report. Anyway it's time for me to get kitted out and see if it does actually deliver. See you tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 260cm Posted on Saturday 18th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and welcome to the weekend. The village was bustling last night as people arrived for their weekend fix - it's going to be another busy one here! A cold and icy start to the day with the temps down to -8 degrees as of 8:30am. The resort isn't actually saying that the top is much colder than the base which is unusual. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. Happily we have some fresh snow to play in... those getting up there early will have anyway. 5cm across most of the mountain during the day yesterday and this morning another 5-15cm of fresh snow to report; with 10cm reported from Hikage and Nagasaka and 15cm reported on the Uenotaira slopes. There's some snow to shovel down in the village as well this morning which is always a good start. As good as news of fresh snow is, we want more. Obviously. Tonight it should be snowing and it's looking good for a decent dump of snow overnight so I am looking forward to reporting that in my next report. Doesn't look like it'll be prolonged though with clearer forecast for Monday but back to decent snowfall around Tuesday. So things are looking promising. All lifts are go! Have a fun weekend. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Ah yes, it is a good morning. Lots of snowfall to report this morning. Here's what the resort themselves are reporting: Yamabiko - 50cm Uenotaira - 30cm Hikage - 35cm Nagasaka - 35cm Karasawa - 30cm So a cool 50cm up on the top Yamabiko runs. There's definitely 30cm down at base too with cars needing to be found within their new snow coverings. This is the kind of morning we like! Well, I do. :) -4C now and not forecast to get any higher for the day. Should be slightly less cold tomorrow but not snowing. Then after that as I think I mentioned yesterday there's some more heavy snowfall due around Tuesday. It should be a very good week. It goes without saying that conditions should be great today. Visibility is poor especially on the top half of the mountain. Exciting, but remember - care needed. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 10cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko runs this morning to report from Nozawa, with thin layer down at base as well - just almost covering up the ground from about 650m upwards. Snow is forecast for the day, so here's hoping that we can get as much out of it as possible. It probably won't rise much over 0 degrees here for the day, with Yamabiko recording temps of -5 degrees as of 7:30am this morning. It doesn't look like there's any change to lift operations and course openings just yet. No doubt the resort is as keen as we are to open up more! Looking ahead, the forecast for Wednesday into Thursday in looking particularly encouraging. Before that though we can expect milder temperatures again early week. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall on the top Yamabiko runs this morning and a nice cold temperature of -6C, with a snow depth of 65cm. They are labelling conditions as 'powder', and I would expect some nice conditions up there this morning. We got a bit of snowfall down at base and village level as well, perhaps 5-10cm or so in places. No further runs opening up just yet. The resort will certainly be getting more of the upper part of the mountain open as soon as they can, so we obviously need a bit more snow for that to happen. Hopefully by this time next week we'll see some big changes. For tomorrow though, the sun should be back along with milder conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and welcome back! The resort this afternoon is reporting 40cm of snow up on the top runs of the resort after the snowfall of yesterday. Exciting times. It's looking really nice and white up there now on the webcams. A bit more down here at base and in the village. It has struggled to warm up beyond freezing point at base today, and we have had sporadic snow but at the moment there are breaks in the cloud and I can see some blue sky out there as well. The forecast is for cloud/sleet/snow into tomorrow. This spell of winter weather will make way for clearer conditions and a warm up later in the week and over the weekend. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A bit more snowfall this morning with between 5-7cm reported on the upper parts of the resort and just a bit down below too. It is cloudy at the moment with light snow trying to fall still at higher elevations. Hoping for more snow today and tomorrow. 11am this morning is the Grand Opening "Opening Festival" for Nozawa Onsen resort, to be held near the top Nagasaka Gondola Station. There should be some sake on offer and no doubt some other goodies and probably your change to shake hands with the Nozawa Onsen mascot character. Perhaps worth a look if you are up there when it happens. There are more lifts and courses open from this morning and it's now easier to say which aren't moving than which are moving. See below for the latest there. Courses wise, the area to the right of the Nagasaka Gondola as you look from the village - including the Skyline course - is not yet open. Other than that, most of the main runs of the resort are open from today. Today is the first day of the three day long weekend in Japan and so it should be quite busy today and tomorrow especially. • Nozawa Now: Saturday 11th January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 215cm Posted on Saturday 11th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . You know when things are going good when you hear people complain about 'too much snow'. Yes I heard that silly comment a few times yesterday. It was a great day though, seriously. Not only did we have all that new snow to play in all over the mountain, but the clouds cleared up in the afternoon and we had blue skies over the mountain for a while... days don't get much better than that. The heavy snowfall transformed many parts of the resort and was just what we wanted and needed. Curiously this morning the resort is only reporting 5cm across the mountain - apart from Uenotaira on 20cm. Add that to the 5cm or so since yesterday morning and we have another layer this morning. The latest forecast is for cloud/snow today. The poor visibility up top will likely clear, though perhaps not in the spectacular fashion it did yesterday, maybe more just cloud. Tomorrow sun is forecast so it should be a very good weekend. The only thing to mention is the crowds. It's the first day of a three day long weekend in Japan and one of the peak times of the snow season. So there are going to be a lot of people in Nozawa. A lot. Early starts are highly recommended to get out there early before the main crowds. We do of course have the famous Fire festival on the 15th January as well, but that's mid-week (Wednesday). Preparations and 'pre-events' for that from Monday.: Official snow depths: Yamabiko - 250cm Uenotaira - 215cm Hikage - 140cm Nagasaka - 130cm Karasawa - 100cm Lifts All lifts operating Courses All courses open except: Kandahar West Kandahar East Nozawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Saturday 11th January 2014 Total snowfall at base 215cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (10th January) November 2013 snowfall 15cm reported on 2 days December 2013 snowfall 100cm reported on 11 days January 2014 snowfall 100cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen.
