Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 242cm Posted on Monday 13th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After seeing the sun and a calm day yesterday during the daytime, snow has been delivered for this morning. 20-30cm of fresh snowfall is being reported from the different areas of the mountain this morning and I am happy to have to get out with a shovel once I have posted this report to move the 25cm or so outside. It's near on whiteout conditions on the upper areas at the moment as the snow continues to fall. -4C at the moment and it's unlikely to warm up today at all, even if the snow eases off as is forecast. Today is the last day of the long weekend of course, and things seem slightly less busy this morning. Expect many more people to be moving on out around lunchtime. From tomorrow we are probably going to have clearer skies over the region, at least not much in terms of snow. Even so, it does look like it will be keeping cold, which is what we want. So decent weather conditions likely for the upcoming 'Dosojin' Fire Festival, the main event which is on Wednesday evening, the 15th. Preparations are underway for this popular annual event in Nozawa. And of course there will be people arriving in Nozawa again to experience it. To sum up the festival... 42 year olds climb atop a wooden shrine protected by the 25 year olds, as the rest of the villagers carry out fire attacks trying to burn down the shrine. Or something like that, but much more. It is ranked in the top three fire festivals in Japan and is always be a great spectacle. Wrap up well and enjoy the festivities in the village. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 260cm Posted on Saturday 18th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and welcome to the weekend. The village was bustling last night as people arrived for their weekend fix - it's going to be another busy one here! A cold and icy start to the day with the temps down to -8 degrees as of 8:30am. The resort isn't actually saying that the top is much colder than the base which is unusual. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. Happily we have some fresh snow to play in... those getting up there early will have anyway. 5cm across most of the mountain during the day yesterday and this morning another 5-15cm of fresh snow to report; with 10cm reported from Hikage and Nagasaka and 15cm reported on the Uenotaira slopes. There's some snow to shovel down in the village as well this morning which is always a good start. As good as news of fresh snow is, we want more. Obviously. Tonight it should be snowing and it's looking good for a decent dump of snow overnight so I am looking forward to reporting that in my next report. Doesn't look like it'll be prolonged though with clearer forecast for Monday but back to decent snowfall around Tuesday. So things are looking promising. All lifts are go! Have a fun weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 252cm Posted on Tuesday 14th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is reporting 10cm of fresh across the mountain this morning, and there's about that down at base. I can also report less people lining up for the gondola this morning, which people who are staying on after that long weekend will surely be pleased to hear. It was a busy weekend. Now that we are back to a normal weekday, a few lifts are stopped as noted below but that is not affecting courses that are open. But I think also a good one with some fine snow conditions. Courses got tracked out of course, but still untouched to be found. Hopefully we'll get some more cm today to give us a decent refresh. Right now, the forecast for tomorrow is clear and sunny. As of 10am, since yesterday the numbers are as follows Yamabiko - 15cm Uenotaira - 12cm Hikage - 8cm Nagasaka - 8cm Karasawa - 0cm So not huge amounts, but we'll take it. Snowfall is expected to ease off during the day and tomorrow will probably start with the sun. It's not as cold this morning, but still in the minus numbers all over the mountain and down at base. We should be back to snow overnight Saturday though and into Sunday. A storm that might bring us some heavy snowfall looks to be brewing around Tuesday-Wednesday as well. Just a dusting of snow at base and up to 5cm reported by the resort up on Uenotaira. Just a thin new layer of snow since yesterday with the top Yamabiko runs reporting 5cm and 1cm on lower slopes. It's a fine morning as well. Cold after a low of around -7 overnight and at 9am around -5C at base. Top runs at -8C as of 7:30am. It's bluebird today as there's quite a bit of cloud hanging on but lots of blue sky and the sun shining down on the slopes. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 333cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a few cm of snowfall yesterday, overnight we have 10cm at base, lower runs, and Yamabiko while 20cm of fresh is being reported by the resort on Uenotaira. I'll be heading up there soon! Relatively mild overnight in Nozawa after a very mild afternoon with temperatures creeping up into positive territory., with a low of -3C in the village but it's forecast to stay around that for the day. Tomorrow should be a mix of cloud with snow showers, while we are still expecting milder temps on Friday and Saturday. A few people have been asking about the snow depth numbers published by the resort and how they compare with last year. (That's basically what they are... published by the resort. Unfortunately I can't go out with a big stick every morning to take those readings). Anyway, here are the numbers from the same day in January last season: Yamabiko - 310cm Uenotaira - 270cm Hikage - 190cm Nagasaka - 180cm Karasawa - 150cm So you'll see that they were all a bit higher this time last year, though not hugely different. Yamabiko this year is actually on more than it was in January 2012, when the number was 270cm. The general consensus (of honest folk!) though is that we do have less snow at the moment than last year. Still, once you got a few m up there, an extra 20-30cm doesn't make all that difference does it? Of course, that amount falling fresh daily would be ideal. We still have a long long way to go in the season, so it still could end up being a bumper one in terms of numbers. We will just have to see what Mother Nature decides to deliver. I say get out there and enjoy it! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 323cm Posted on Tuesday 21st January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yes, yesterday was a very fine day after that very decent amount of snowfall. Snow clouds moved back in though and this morning there's some new cm to report from just a few at base to 10cm on the top Yamabiko runs. It wasn't as cold overnight and actually now the temperature is just under 0C though it should stay around there for the day and tomorrow should be cooler. It's snowing very lightly here as I write this and a look at the cams shows very poor visibility up on the mountain - perhaps snowing more heavily up there. Unconfirmed! Thick fog seems to be covering the top half. It should be snowing on and off, hopefully more on than off, for the day and also tomorrow. One thing that we have lacked this season is consistent full-on conditions... like what we had the other day, but regularly and continuing for days. We could do with some of that. But anyway. Yes, later on in the week a warm spell is forecast. Sunny and warmer on Friday and there's even a chance of some rain in the village at the weekend but fingers crossed even if we get that it won't last long and turn into snow. Let's forget about that until later in the week! For now, conditions should still be really good again today. Just know the layout and where you're going because visibility is very limited up there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good old heavy dump of Nozawa snow is always wonderful to witness and the last 48 hours or so has really delivered. Heavy snow yesterday following on from the overnight snow with 20-35cm of additional snowfall being reported by the skijo across the mountain. Just totting up the numbers... Yamabiko - 88cm Uenotaira - 63cm Hikage - 66cm Nagasaka - 56cm Karasawa - 50cm Including the few cm or so overnight, that's 85cm in 2 days for the top runs as reported by the resort. :) It's always great to get a decent amount down at village level as well, it really adds to the excitement. Some of the weekend crowds may not have appreciated the snow conditions, but this morning will surely be one for everyone. We have clearer skies this morning, the sun is already starting up and it looks like it will be a fine day. Sorry, make that an awesome day. And regular readers will know that SnowJapan doesn't like hyperbole in it's reports --- I just reckon that today should be one of the days of the season. What's more, snow is on the way again by the end of the day and I should be reporting more in my next report. Anyway it's time for me to get kitted out and see if it does actually deliver. There's definitely 30cm down at base too with cars needing to be found within their new snow coverings. This is the kind of morning we like! Well, I do. :) -4C now and not forecast to get any higher for the day. Should be slightly less cold tomorrow but not snowing. Then after that as I think I mentioned yesterday there's some more heavy snowfall due around Tuesday. It should be a very good week. It goes without saying that conditions should be great today. Snowfall reported by the resort since yesterday morning, after the snowfall we had yesterday during the day time and overnight. Yamabiko - 34cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 45cm Nagasaka - 40cm Karasawa - 35cm Yamabiko snow depth is also back up to 3m this morning. Yes, it has been a Nozawa-like snowy 24 hours here. A bit of a surprise at just how much we have got, but a good surprise. It is continuing to snow as well, so let's get some more out of it. The forecast does tell us to expect the snow clouds to ease off though during the day, to be followed by a clear and sunny day tomorrow. As I mentioned before temps are set to creep up a bit from tomorrow for a few days and we still might get some rain late Saturday though hopefully that will be kept to a minimum and it will be snowing where it really matters - on the slopes. We'll see. For now though should be fantastic conditions this morning and then that possibly bluebird tomorrow. Nice! And what better than 20cm of fresh snow to help us celebrate. And clearing blue skies as well. And some good cold conditions to keep it all in check. Nice. The early morning clouds have quite quickly started to make an exit leaving us with what we have now and it should be a great morning. There's more sun than snow on the forecast for the next 3-4 days and from tomorrow in particularly temperatures are going to go up and venture into positive numbers - expect a high of around 4-5 degrees during the daytime. Mid week should see a return to colder conditions.
