The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a brief hiatus heavy snow returned to Nozawa Onsen at about 1am last night and was still falling as of 730am this morning. Unusually, more snow collected in the lower reaches of the resort than the summit. 30cm was recorded down low while the top received 20cm. Areas that were mostly tracked out yesterday afternoon have been almost completely refreshed so it should be another good days riding. Sun, light winds and cloudless blue sky remained for the duration of yesterday. Those who got up were rewarded with deep dry snow, numerous untracked areas and an unbeatable backdrop including views of the soaring Japanese Alps. Yesterday was a good day to be on the mountain. It looks like snow is set to continue today and tomorrow so riding should be outstanding over the next few days. Following that, we should experience some good weather for around three or four days as an area of high pressure moves over the region. The next chance of snow looks possible around the 22nd/23rd of this month. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It looks like we have another day of fresh Nozawa powder here in Nozawa Onsen this morning. As the last lifts were spinning yesterday afternoon we had a sudden increase of intense snowfall which lasted most of the night delivering 50cm of fresh to the slopes! Looking out the window; we have heavy snow continuing and deep snow on the balcony. Wind should be stronger today with 40km/h and higher gusts expected later this afternoon. 30cm of fresh snow in the village areas this morning. The powder hounds were in full force yesterday with most of the well known haunts becoming tracked by the end of the day. Snow quality was very good indeed, but visibility was somewhat varied as thick clouds moved about the peaks. Overall, another quality day of riding, a seemingly typical trend recently. We should see snow continue for the rest of today before a clearing trend later tonight. In the following days we should expect periods of sun, mostly in the mornings, followed by afternoon snow showers. All-in-all, variable weather is expected. The kind of forecast that is never 100%. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Grey Skies and Happy Faces Well it's been a massive few days at Nozawa Onsen. Since the start of this past system we have had well over a meter of fresh snowfall. Moderate and at times heavy snow continued to fall yesterday and currently we have overcast conditions, but there is no snow falling at the moment. It feels milder than it has been as well this morning. 15-20cm of new snow is being reported by the resort on the slopes since yesterday. The forecast tends to suggest we should experience a clearing trend throughout the day, but also indicates the possibility of further snow showers passing over the region this afternoon and tonight. So take your pick! Reports from the mountain yesterday tend to suggest the snow was too deep to ride for all but a select few who had the equipment, experience and confidence to ride some of the steeper out of bounds terrain. With all the snow we've had, most of the inbound terrain was simply not steep enough to maintain forward momentum and many riders became bogged down in the deep powder. This of course, excludes the groomed runs which were great early, but became tracked out and bumpy later in the day. The weather over the next week looks unpredictable. It seems snow showers, clouds and periods of sun will vary by the hour for the next few days or so. The temperature looks to fluctuate highly each day as well with variations in freezing level between below sea level and 1000m above sea level. I am hesitant to make any hard-and-fast calls regarding the weather over the next few days. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We have a stunning morning here in Nozawa Onsen. After four days of snowy conditions the clouds have parted and we have warm sunshine beaming down on the resort. Make the most of it as clouds are forecast to move in during the afternoon. Temperatures are set to increase into the positives at village level as the day moves on. Without any significant falls overnight tracks from yesterday will still be present off piste. Cold overnight temperatures mean the groomers will be firm and fast early on, but soften during the day. Yesterday was a busy day on the mountain. There was quality snow on offer but it became tracked early in most of the well known areas. Clouds and snow showers persisted throughout the day adding to the already respectable base. At the moment the long range forecast is looking good for some significant snowfalls commencing on the night of the 24th and continuing till at least the 27th, possibly longer. It is possible for a meter or more to fall over this time with a freezing level below sea level. The short range forecast suggests snowfalls are expected on the 22nd, however relative high temperatures tend to suggest it will not be classic powder, but rather wet in consistency. Have a good day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Passing heavy snow showers are producing the goods in Nozawa Onsen this morning. A particularly heavy one passed through between 7 and 8am delivering around 10cm to the railing outside. It's not snowing at the moment - and there's even a bit of sunlight shining down on some slopes at the moment with some narrow breaks in the cloud - but looking west we have some more dark clouds looming on the horizon that look very promising. The resort itself was reporting a fresh 2cm of snow on lower slopes and 5cm on upper slopes overnight. Yesterday saw beautiful conditions. Clear weather remained for most of the day with some interestingly shaped high clouds moving over during the afternoon. The skiing was fast and icy on the groomed runs- perfect for practicing carving technique at speed. The off piste areas even offered a few nice lines up high. It was a very good day for photos as well with even the Sea of Japan visible in the distance. The wind looks like it will remain moderately strong for the remainder of the day before increasing in intensity tomorrow. Forecast to be blowing at 60km/h, don't be surprised if some of the top lifts are on wind hold. The heaviest snowfalls are expected to occur tomorrow night and temperatures should get be very cold. Keep in mind the avalanche conditions will be extreme over the next couple of days. Heavy snowfalls on top of an icy base will make the snowpack very unstable. Always take avalanche gear, don't ride alone and have the necessary training before skiing off piste. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's always good to wake to the sound of snow sliding off the roof and the machines clearing the road in the morning. This was the case in Nozawa Onsen earlier. It is currently dumping consistent thick flakes and really looks to have set in. 2-5cm since 3pm yesterday, and about 10cm more since 8am this morning as of 10:30am - so coming down nicely now. Finally this long awaited system has begun to deliver which is good as the lack of substantial snowfalls yesterday was starting to make my forecasting look bad! Today is Australia Day and there is a real party mood around this morning. With the good snow on offer, it should be a good day for all in Nozawa. Yesterday looked promising at day break with a heavy snow shower passing through, delivering about 10cm to the resort. However after that the sky cleared and it remained partly cloudy for the rest of the day. It was still a fun day on the mountain with small crowds. Kandahar remained undiscovered during the day and fresh tracks were still on offer even in the afternoon. Up high in the trees around Yamabiko was very fun thanks to the morning snowfalls. Some of the groomed runs became very icy in the afternoon and made it a real challenge to hold an edge. The forecast looks good for snow to continue for the rest of the day becoming heavier later tonight. Following that snow showers should persist tomorrow, Monday and maybe Tuesday before clearing to sunny skies. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There is heavy snow about the village of Nozawa Onsen this morning. We have had 20cm fall overnight across the mountain top to bottom and cold temperatures will ensure the fresh accumulations will be of high quality, especially up high. Strong wind about the peaks yesterday will have formed quite a few wind features to hit. We saw extremely cold windchill factors yesterday lingering around -20 to -30C so it’s safe to say yesterday was cold, very cold. This didn’t seem to keep the weekend crowds away. However those who braved the conditions were rewarded with perfect knee deep powder amongst the trees. Looking at the forecast snow showers and cold temperatures should continue for the next two days before possible warm temperatures move in around Thursday. A generally calmer week ahead by the looks of things. Be careful in the backcountry as avalanche conditions are extreme at the moment. Do not ride alone and always have the necessary equipment and training if you make the decision to venture out. There's more than enough quality riding on resort though at the moment. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's an interesting morning here in Nozawa Onsen. We have some light snow falling across the mountain with quite a large variation in temperature from top to bottom. Up high it is still cold, sitting at -8C but down low is positively balmy at about +1C. Therefore we should expect a high degree of snow quality variation across differing altitudes today. Interestingly we have also had more snow down low than up high. 10cm was recorded on the lower slopes while up high only received 2cm. Yesterday was a quiet day on the hill. Thanks to cold morning temperatures the snow was very nice in quality with many powder pockets on offer through the trees. The groomed runs were nice to begin before becoming firm and fast in the afternoon, icy in stretches. Snow clouds moved away at midday and it remained partly cloudy with even some sun during the afternoon. Lower slopes became sun affected with a crust forming off piste as the day wound up. Tomorrow we should expect a nice clear sunny day. No new snow is expected. Following that there should be a bit of warmth moving over the region on Friday and Saturday, possible even some dreaded rain. Thankfully the warm temps should not linger with a cool front breaking through on Saturday night. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's another snowy day here in Nozawa Onsen. Light flurries continued overnight producing 5cm up top and 10cm in the village. It looks like today will be yet another nice day with plenty of fresh tracks on offer and minimal crowds. Yesterday saw great conditions across the mountain. Morning snow showers gave way to partly cloudy conditions. Lift lines were almost non-existent and the snow remained in great shape throughout, especially in the trees. The sun remained until just before last lifts when the snow clouds once again blew in obscuring the top half of the resort. The current forecast looks like a real mixed bag. We are expecting sun, snow, rain and cloud over the next four days or so. Snow showers are possible for most of today and tomorrow before clearing to fine weather on Thursday. The predictions for Friday and Saturday are very warm temperatures with a freezing level of over 2000m. Some rain is possible during this time from an unwanted SW airstream. Luckily cold temperatures and snow are expected to arrive by Sunday putting a stop to the temporary spring-like conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Sorry for the delayed report today guys. Everyone is wondering what the snow is like and I can assure that it is quite fine and hasn't suddenly all disappeared. We woke this morning to passing snow showers that had dusted the resort with 2cm of fresh cover. Since first lifts we have had a further 6cm fall up top. It is now sunny and partly cloudy in Nozawa Onsen this morning and it has been a great day on the mountain with minimal crowds. Some were saying yesterday was the day of the week and they were mostly correct with extremely cold overnight temps and fresh tracks on offer. Unexpectedly the sun had broken through the clouds by midday and it was fine for the duration of the afternoon. The sun yesterday had formed a crust layer in certain areas. Looking ahead the forecast suggests we should see light snow overnight before conditions clear again tomorrow with fine weather expected. Just the 2 lifts tomorrow, with more open from Saturday. Madarao will decide on whether to get those tree run courses open at the weekend sometime tomorrow. The Mountain Pass with connecting Tangram will be available from 20th. So here we are. On the verge of a new season. And it should be the best possible start with a bit more fresh due today and then clearer skies possible tomorrow. I for one am mega excited. And you should be too. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Madarao is open! Hurray! And doesn't it look lovely. Yes, here we are once again at the beginning of a new season. Not much to say really other than it's a close to perfect start to the season with the large amounts of snow (another 30-50cm) and weather this morning. Some cloud around but clearing up with some blue sky as well. Nice and cold so the snow conditions will remain excellent. I almost don't want to say this but before the snow that's due again on Sunday, there's a chance it might rain. Whoever's in charge of the weather, please no! More lifts open tomorrow.
