The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Aha, the warm spell did let up. I was almost daring it not to yesterday. But it did and this morning we are the happy recipients of new snow. Yes, fresh snow! 5-10cm here in Naeba and up to 20cm at Kagura. The downside to this is that strong winds again are messing with lifts and as such only the Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 pair lift is open at Kagura. Looks like here in Naeba the top area will be closed, but we might expect changes to that especially if the winds die down some. This snow isn't supposed to last long, as tomorrow should be bluebird and warmer once again. But hey, new snow. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Hurray! Good news this morning. Yes, we have new snow. It started later on in the day yesterday and just now Kagura have reported 10-15cm of fresh snow on the slopes. Here in Naeba, it's a report of 5-10cm and I can confirm about 5cm on the ground here. Yey. A cold start to the morning as well and about -5C. The snow has eased off now and actually the sun is out. More blue sky opening up as clouds scatter. The forecast has us down for cloud today but looks like it should be much clearer than that. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Rain we got yesterday and this morning early on it's cloudy and some light rain still falling, though up at Kagura it is apparently holding off at the moment. Early on as well it's fairly calm but later stronger winds are forecast. For now Kagura seems intent on being open as normal but there may be some lift operations affected at Naeba come opening time. Today is of course the last day of the ski season at Naeba. Looks like we might have to wait a bit longer for clearer weather conditions as rain/sleet is lined up through until tomorrow. Perhaps better from Tuesday. Kagura information will be covered on the Yuzawa Now section of the site. Naeba Now will be back as next winter season approaches. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A sunny, beautiful day to follow the snow of the past few days. It's beginning to look a lot mor like Myoko these days; the roadside snow walls are growing, and the small trees are disappearing into the snowpack. And it's cold today, too--Suginohara's a bit at the extreme, but it was a pretty cold night. After really light fun snow on the 3rd, we had very dense, wind-packed snow yesterday. Backcountry, it was dense enough that, even on the steepest slopes, it was almost impossible to do much more than slowly go straight down, maybe getting in one or two turns (narrow skis? Follow somebody else!). It should settle in now with some sun, and start the cycle over again. The ski areas, of course, are in great condition, and it's a beautiful day to get out and enjoy cruising around. Looks like some more fresh snow tomorrow, too. The snow is again falling; nothing too heavy, it seems, but a nice, ongoing fall of beautiful flakes. yes, I'm feeling poetic on this last day before most of Japanese have to head back to the daily grind. Good job guys; we'll be thinking about you out here in the snow! Anyway, while they're busy rebuilding Japan's economy, we have snow to deal with. Looks like a little more today on top of that dense base that is settling pretty well. Should be good conditions ahead. A little sun, and slightly warmer temperatures ahead, but no worries about rain or anything that drastic. There is a low pressure system moving in from the west that may settle in over the area in the next 48 hours - hope that means one of those un-predicted heavy falls. You just never know for sure (cross fingers). Clouds to the north out over the Japan Sea, which might or might not mean anything--a low-pressure area looked like it might move in tomorrow, but our trusty Snow Japan report has now turned to sun again for tomorrow. Not too much of the bright stuff, we hope, as we could still use a little more base and fresh powder. We believe so and hope so! What I'm really hoping for is when the report says "moderate snow" because that's when meters of the stuff fall. Right now it's gray and getting foggier, maybe meaning the lowering freezing line that's supposed to happen through the day. The wind is starting to pick up from the north, too, so the weather is changing, whatever happens. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I come to you, humbly, apologetically.... OK, I missed yesterday's report--too many people to take care of, too much on his poor mind (oh, the life of a writer/skier). Anyway, it was a beautiful day yesterday, with the powder off piste slowly getting softer and heavier, but the gelende/piste/groomed runs very nice all day. Today is more bluebird, so it's going to be a better day for the piste than the hills (but it will be beautiful offpiste). We could use a good blast of fresh powder shortly, and looks like snow will be back i the coming days. People are really churning up the backcountry, which is fine (I guess--it's not a competition, kids; savor the mountains and set aside the testosterone), but these cycles of sun could going to result in some weak layers in the snowpack. Talk to the locals; don't go where you don't know. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I had to get out this morning to see the real snow conditions--because it was snowing good and hard--at Seki Onsen. An interesting place, and lots of fairly chewy, heavy powder. Pretty good wind through the day as well, which I think accounts for some of the weight; snow was packed in places. We knew it was coming last night because we had some serious thunder and lightning--the sign of heavy snowfall. It aslo usually menas that the fall will be graupel, or soft hail, and that was definitely the case. The flakes got lighter and fluffier during the day, so a good reset on the hills for tomorrow. Maybe a little sun tomorrow (go for it, bluebird fans), before going back to snow (and the more the better, says I). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is back today; about 10 cm so far, and it looks steady if not particularly Myoko-heavy yet. Good timing, too; we needed a reset on powder! Last day of a three-day weekend means it might be a bit crowded in the morning, but people usually start leaving mid-day or so. In the backcountry, as I mentioned earlier, the recent sun and warm weather could create some weak layers in the snow--keep an eye on the snowpack as you head out.
